If you don't find value in smartphones I can respect that

You'd have to pry my own from my cold, dead hands. I have a map of the entire world (mostly) in my pocket! That in itself I find invaluable. I use Google Maps all the time. To find places and to navigate to them. On foot, public transit, and car. Here and in other countries.

Sure, I used to manage before Maps was a thing but do I ever want to go back? Nope.

That is one killer feature for me

And yeah I definitely see how life changed for the worse because of them. I actively moderate my own behavior.

I write my code for future maintainers. I optimize for clarity, testability, and readability.

I've become a huge fan of dependency injection. That does not mean I like DI frameworks (Guice). I tend to do it manually with regular code.

When I maintain code and I sit there wondering what it actually does, I write a unit test for it right then and there

And so on

For the sake of discussion, let's say on the one hand a magic man intelligently designed life and all that. And on the other hand we have it arise and evolve over the course of billions of years of random atomic interactions and genetic mutations. I honestly find the second one far more amazing, wondrous, amazing, and mind blowing.

I'm fortunate enough to live in a walkable neighborhood. When I moved here walkability didn't really factor in; I have friends here and I liked the apartment.

Man, it is so nice. I definitely appreciate it now and will try to factor it in in the future. I am absolutely convinced that walkability fosters community and cars reinforce social isolation.

I still have my car but I consider it and driving a burden. If I had to replace it I'm pretty sure I wouldn't.

At the moment I get a new notification I decide if it's useful. If it isn't, the category gets turned off.

My bar for apps is also extremely high. I don't get the notifications if the app isn't installed.

  • Cars divide everything with highways, busy roads, and slow traffic.

I'm glad you pointed this out. I realized how isolating cars are after moving to a walkable neighborhood. I'm convinced walkable neighborhoods foster community.
