I’ve been self hosting email successfully for 20 years. My goto article for this question:

https://poolp.org/...

TLDR;

  • Mail is not hard: people keep repeating that because they read it, not because they tried it
  • Big Mailer Corps are quite happy with that myth, it keeps their userbase growing
  • Big Mailer Corps control a large percentage of the e-mail address space which is good for none of us
  • It's ok that people have their e-mails hosted at Big Mailer Corps as long as there's enough people outside too

Fictional planet names (mostly early Star Wars because I’m old): Dantooine, Naboo, Tatooine, Jabba (not a planet, but server for “data storage” hence smuggler reference), Bespin and odd one out Arrakis (laptop).

I’m confused too. Nowadays everyone is fighting everyone? 🤷‍♂️ Alright, back to IRC it is.

“abuse”

Mae was warned that one of her managers was “a ‘fixer’ who goes after employees that were seen as stirring the pot.”

So basically doing their “managing job” in the best interest of the company.

I’ve been a happy customer of Metaregistrar for over a decade. No complaints, fair prices. Just moved a .be from Gandi there because they wanted to charge me €30 excl. VAT for 1 year. Retail price of .be by DNS.be is about €5 and Metaregistrar only charges me €7,5 excl. VAT for a .be for a year. Was at Gandi with that domain because they used to offer free mailboxes with domain name registrations but have since stopped that. Shop around people!

Yeah I checked out of Nostr after CSAM started appearing in my feed. That really sucked because I liked the technology, but there’s a line to be drawn.

Yes, we use it and are happy with the service. Not so much because of its security / encryption features, but because it’s a Belgian based, independent email provider and I applaud that. I just moved my family there from Gandi after they screwed their users with price hikes and false promises. For context, I am Belgian and have met the founder. They have a nice mission. I still self host my own email on my own mail server for 20+ years. But if I weren’t, I would probably use Mailfence.

What I also appreciate about Mailfence is that they stick to using standard protocols. Protonmail needs an intermediary layer to provide IMAP services for instance if I recall correctly. Perhaps they (Protonmail) do this to arguably offer better encryption services, but to me email is not very secure to begin with, no matter what you do. You’ll always have your messages pass through other people’s servers and systems and not all your recipients will be comfortable with PGP or s/MIME. I love email as an OG federated service though, despite what some may consider flaws in this modern age. It’s such a core and empowering technology of the internet!

The seriousness of some of the comments here is way out of sync with the tongue-in-cheek writing style of The Register.

Exactly what kind of pigeons are we talking about here? Or would you recommend switching to an avian variant of the migratory type?
