Not really bothered what happens over there now. Iβm no longer invested in their community. Yeah Iβll be poking my head back in over there occasionally I think, but lemmy is scratching my itch for scrolling and doing it in a way that seems less harmful to my spare time and mental health.
My reddit protest consisted of:
Iβve already opened a google link to something on reddit only to find it was deleted by the user. So I think the withdrawal of content is going to have a lasting impact.
Itβs a cool name, but I agree its too long for a street. Would make a good name for a park or a reserve or something in the area. To me an ideal street name is around 2 or 3 syllables. βAcaciaβ is a pretty crap name too though, better to pick something with a connection to the land and the people.
They mention theyβre arranging a hui so hopefully a decent compromise can come from that.
I'm in the keep cats indoors camp. Cats live longer, healthier, happier lives if they're kept indoors. We expect other animals to be kept confined to their owner's property (dogs, cows, sheep, lizards, birds, etc) so I don't see why that expectation should not extend to cats.
Given the enormous damage they do to our native ecosystem I think it makes sense. Feral cats are a pest and currently eradication efforts are hampered because we have to take measures we aren't indiscriminately killing pet cats along with the feral ones. If all pet cats could be expected to remain under owner's control, then the options for eradicating the pests go up a lot.
First step though is to require cats to be micro-chipped and registered, just like dogs are.
Asked about Luxon's comments this afternoon, Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said: "Christopher Luxon said that? I guess it makes a change that he's running New Zealand down in New Zealand as opposed to running the country down when he's overseas."
Interesting implementation. Not sure if its a good thing or a bad thing that it puts the βIβm a botβ message at the start of the post. It means all the posts look the same when scrolling a feed, but they are also clearly marked as bot content.
Personally I wonβt be using that particular community - Iβd rather foster organic content that is native to lemmy. Some of the larger Mastodon instances (including the .nz one) ban autobot-posting such as this because it actually decreases engagement.
And Hamas are miserable anti-Semitic goons that are an armed minority and do not represent the interests of most Palestinians.
Interestingly the phrase was originally used by Likud in 1977 in an election charter: βbetween the Sea and the Jordan there will only be Israeli sovereigntyβ. If this phrase is a call to genocide the knife cuts both ways.
He uses an "average house price" of $893,639. That is being massively skewed upwards by urban centres. Rural houses are still relatively affordable - a quick search on Trademe finds perfectly acceptable houses in small towns like Ashburton for $300k, and if you get out into rural areas it gets even cheaper. He's also assuming that farmhand would have bought an "average-price" house back in the 90s - in fact rural houses were cheaper back then just as they are today.
Using the Westpac Mortgage calculator he used, a couple each on the median income of $61k ($29 an hour) could afford a property at $809,687 with a 20% deposit. To give him credit, that is still pretty much unaffordable for most people and something we should all be appalled by, but it is nowhere near as terrible as the picture he is painting.
I know nothing about them.
Vince has some extremely questionable views on things like culture, race, history and politics. According to him, ultimately a lot of things come back to "the Jews". He is a contributor to the far-right fringe disinformation outlet Counterspin Media.
The slogan isnβt calling for a genocide, itβs calling for freedom for Palestinians. That isnβt anti-Semitic. Itβs just bad faith to conflate Palestinian human rights with a genocide against Israelis. Human rights arenβt a zero-sum game, everyone can have them.
thanks for using Leebra!
