Everything you've said is wrong.

They are cheering for the violent suppression of speech.

No, they are cheering for the violent suppression of fascism.

You can disagree with bad ideas with better ideas. That is Democracy.

No, that is a debate. Democracy is more complicated than that, and includes the duty to defend the right to free speech by preemptively suppressing the free speech of those who would use free speech to suppress free speech. It sounds hypocritical at first, but if you sit with it for a little while, the logic of it is unassailable.

But you are defending the use of physical violence to ensure people with different ideas "stay afraid.".

No, they are defending the use of physical violence to ensure people with fascist ideas stay afraid. This is a crucial defense of democracy. Someone this far gone isn't going to respond with an open mind to better arguments. There is always hope that they might at some point realise how stupid they've been, but in the meantime, they do need to be afraid to voice their ideas.

That is the exact definition of terrorism.

No it isn't. Look it up.

But yeah, go ahead and sing your little song while acting as the cheering section for literal authoritarian terrorism. I'm sure your brand of beating people into silence is the good kind and won't be used against you.

You've not proved any of this, so you don't get this triumphant bit, sorry.

There is at least one account on Lemmy who is blaming the mother on this one, depressingly.

So you started by promising to argue in good faith, and I started reading your reply with the intention of going through and responding to your points.
But then by the end you have confused me with another commenter, accused me of cheering for terrorists, being an authoritarian, advocating for terrorism, etc. Your last sentence is an unjustified ad hominem attack, and a threatening one at that. Your comment isn't even logically consistent, let alone good faith, so I don't feel like it deserves a well-thought-out reply.

Bottom line: you're apologising for fascism. You're implying that there's a consensus on where the line of intolerance for the intolerant should be drawn, and how it should be defined. You don't have the authority to tell us where/what that line is.

Completely agree with your take on the UK office. Worse, it started a trend in trying to make the audience cringe instead of laugh.

And I've always been at least mildly irritated by Gervais, the cunt. Bothered me how everything he did got critical acclaim and I'd have to have the same conversation over and over again about how he just sets my teeth on edge, and no I haven't watched, and no, I don't want to give this one a try, and no, please stop trying to persuade me to like anything with that shit in it, it's not going to happen, yes I guess I probably am the weird one for not liking him...etc.

AFAIK Starmer has done nothing to reduce Trans rights.

From Wikipedia:

"In July 2024, UK Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer stated that trans women should not have the right to use women-only spaces, even with a gender recognition certificate.[14][15][16] He also ruled out allowing trans people to self-ID.[17] Starmer also said he would continue the block on the Gender Recognition Reform Bill in Scotland.[18] In December 2024, Starmer followed through on this by making the ban on puberty blockers to treat gender dysphoria in under-18s permanent on the basis of "independent expert advice that there is currently an unacceptable safety risk in the continued prescription of puberty blockers to children."[19] Despite the assertion that puberty blockers are unsafe when prescribed to children, they remain available for the treatment of precocious puberty.[20]"

You are making a giant straw man argument, would it make a difference for Starmer to merely say Israel is committing genocide?

Yes, it would. Gaza is on the ballot.

Invading peoples privacy was implemented by the Conservatives.

The Labour party voted for the act, and have overseen its implementation.

While you IMO have a point about Palantir, the goal is to improve management and analysis of health data. It is not about "selling" data.

The NHS's goal is to improve management and analysis. Palantir's goal is to accrue and sell data. The problem is that the contract was awarded to Palantir - by the Labour gov.

You are basically just proving my point, as you fail to point to anything Starmer actually did wrong.

Reality begs to differ, see above.

Starmer is mostly unpopular because everything has gotten worse after Brexit, and Starmer is unable to turn it around quickly.

Starmer is unpopular because he's an appalling politician. And -to be as kind and equable as can be- a dishonest shit rag. Blaming Brexit for Starmer's failures is like Trump blaming the Democrats for the reflecting pool.

All great advice. Can I just add two details?

  1. Install the foil on the outside of the windows if possible. The sun will still heat the air between your window and the foil, raising the temperature in your room, if you install on the inside.
  2. Kitchen foil works just as well. Harder to install, but cheaper. I crafted some sun blinds with tinfoil and cardboard that I use every year.

I can't stress enough how much is a difference the foil blinds make. Goes from unbearable to comfortable almost immediately.

Yeah some of them have shown promise. Burnham does. Even Starmer showed promise.
It's the problem that they seem to turn into zombies as soon as they get into power that's the problem. Let's see what happens with this next one.

It's actually politically damaging to help the USA in its folly wars under this regime. Trump is even less popular in Europe than he is in the US. I guess they probably would help, but not definitely, and definitely not enthusiastically.

Running away from cops...is completely reckless in my opinion.

You're blaming the mother.
She's so desperate she had to steal childcare products. Things are going through her head like "the police will use lethal force", and "who will look after my baby". Of course she fled. She fled because she's a human being in an incredibly emotional state trying to care for her children.
Completely understandable that she tried to escape. That's why police get cars, to chase people who do. It happens a lot.
The cop, on the other hand, was at work and in charge of the situation, but murdered an infant.

By saying "this is the way things are, whether it's fair or not, we all know the police might kill your kid", you're asking us to first accept that. And we absolutely should not.

In November 2023, after the October 7 attacks, Snider was asked if he agreed with Israel soldiers using "We're Not Gonna Take It" as a battle cry. He replied, "Oh, hell yeah. You know what? Israelis, the assault on the Israelis, people are losing sight of something. People saying that, 'Oh, the response is gonna be too intense for what happened.' Well, you don't get to decide on the response when you do heinous things to civilians. You don't get to say, 'Oh, that's enough, that's enough retaliation.' No, it doesn't work like that. When you cross that line, you're burning people, you're slaughtering people, you're raping people, you're just killing people, after what happened at that festival you don't get to say, 'Okay, your revenge can be this much.' No. Payback's a mothereffer. And I come from that school. You cross that line, you know... shit's gonna happen. Sing it out, boys."

The clues to who she is were there all along in her writing. She couldn't keep quiet, because she believes what she's doing is right. Because she's conservative.
The only major black character in the series is called "Shacklebolt". The only Asian, "Cho Chang". Zero LGBTQ representation in the books. Harry had the world at his feet and decided to join the police. The whole struggle of the saga is for a return to the status quo, rather than a better world. General lack of female agency, and women just being hysterical and needing to be slapped out of it. Goblins as an antisemitic trope. I could go on.
I put it to you that it was inevitable that, one way or another, her rancorous bile would have spilled out into the public debate as soon as she got famous.

Yep. Spiders are top 10 ugliest creatures in history, but I would never kill one unless it was a lethally toxic variety. Because they keep the population of disease-carrying, filthy-egg-laying proboscidean-vomiting flying vermin down. Spiders are bros.
