At this point anyone selling a company to a bigger studio is just either ignorant or greedy. It’s almost a given that they’ll just crash it into the grounds. Acquisitions and mergers might be like the eighth deadly sin. Everyone loses.

My concern is basically that this forces people to use very expensive cert providers, since it is infeasible to setup and connect and secure an HSM that can do this yourself. And Microsoft and Amazon have tricked the browser forums that their online ones are good enough.

It essentially puts yet another monopoly into the “open” Web. The CA browser forum is a joke at this point and I don’t respect any of the decision in the last 10 years. They all serve to further centralize and close off the web.

People keep bringing up LetsEncrypt, but it very much cannot issue EV carts. It costs THOUSANDS of dollars to use a service that can auto renew “trusted certs”.

I sounds more like it makes electricity out of fresh water, destroying it in the process (turning it into saltwater through osmosis/dilution). Saying it uses less power that a toaster is not much. Yes, it uses less power than a thing that literally turns electricity into pure heat… but that’s sort of a requirement for toast. That’s still a LOT of electricity. And it’s not required. People don’t need to burn down a rainforest to summarize a meeting. Just use your earballs.

Just silently grumping about it isn’t backlash. Backlash is a whole team just walking off, or a picket line around campus. I think this article makes a pretty big leap in the middle. There's really no reason that the operating system needs to be involved in the "Private" solution. It could just as easily be a website or a browser plugin. All you need is your government of choice to have some way to provide a token with whatever important bits necessary in it ("Yes this person is over 18 and a resident of WA"). You could even have third party sites/libraries that could read that token and verify what it contains.

The last third of the article is all based on that giant leap.

I would say absolutely. The 2004 series one of my favorite series, even if I find the end tapers of in quality in my opinion. Otherwise it’s great. Give it a watch.

That sounds like indifference to me. They are “fine” with wrecking stuff, but that’s not their goal. Their goal is more power, more money, more… whatever. They are 100% indifferent to the countries welfare. At least that’s what it feels like to me. It’s definitely still bad, as indifference to other peoples suffering is a pretty crappy way to be.

I like to think that genuine connection and collaborations aren’t… resources. I’m not some chit to be moved from one column to the next. The stuff you are talking about is part of being a human being. Could I maybe technically crap out 10% more lines of code if I’m a hermit working in a dank closet in my tiny apartment? Maybe. Is the newbie next time who doesn’t know what to do going to have any chance to grow and learn just from being part of things that happen organically? No.
