Crown Resorts’ lawyers have warned the federal court that the casino operator would face “significant financial hardship” if forced to immediately pay its $450 million settlement with Australia’s financial crimes regulator Austrac.

Isn’t that the whole point of a fine? If it wouldn’t cause them any hardship, they’ll just treat it as the cost of doing business.

I’m in my 40s, and I’ve helped out with the local kids’ soccer thing on Friday afternoons after school and various other things. Teenage girls think I’m great – I guess I give off a “cool dad” vibe or something. But teenage girls are incredibly annoying. I can’t even imagine actively seeking them out.

Probably happened as part of the changes they did to make it so only logged in users can view any tweets at all. Looks like twitter is intent on killing itself.

I explained the reason for this on reddit. TL;DR African farmers have better access to refrigeration and transport, and as a result have switched to more profitable crops than cacao (the reason they were growing cacao specifically was because it can be dried and stored without refrigeration until transport is available and demand is present). The price of chocolate has to increase substantially. There’s no point stockpiling it.

This graph is a reflection of African farmers’ lives improving playing out in global supply/demand economics. It’s only “depressing” if the only thing you care about is your access to cheap chocolate.

Yeah, they played well (including a spectacular goal), but slipped up on defence. The better team won. Still a pretty good result.

A teacher at my son’s high school apparently had no choice but to resign after displaying racism while teaching a class. It’s a very multicultural school, I didn’t expect this. But given the amount of racism I get from random strangers in Melbourne, I really shouldn’t be surprised. Looking at threads over on r/melbourne, the introverted and unwelcoming attitude that permeates the city is really obvious. Rationally, I know it isn’t everyone in Melbourne, but God damn these people make sure you notice them.

also she lives in a smallish community in buttfuck Vic and she doesn’t remember which of the three “asian groceries” she went to

She also has a property in Mt Waverly and claims that's where the "Asian grocery" is. Apparently Mt Waverly has two Korean grocery stores, and two other grocery stores that sell east or southeast Asian goods. Still doesn't make sense.

Also, threw out the dehydrator that she didn't use to dehydrate the dried mushrooms she bought. That doesn't hold water at all.

I lived in Melbourne for about a decade solid, and have split time between Melbourne and Sydney for over a decade since then, and am also lucky enough not to have encountered him. If he pulls this sexual assault stunt somewhat regularly, why hasn’t he been put away?

I actually enjoy ironing, but my wife doesn’t, and our ironing board in Melbourne is covered with her junk so I can’t actually use it. I just avoid wearing stuff that needs ironing most of the time in Melbourne. I iron my clothes in Sydney, though.

What’s with the eshay hate over at r/melbourne? If you believe what you read there, packs of vicious eshays roam Melbourne, contributing to the downfall of society. They harass strangers, carry weapons, obstruct traffic, and make the city unlivable.

I get out for exercise in Melbourne at all hours of day or night. I occasionally encounter eshays late at night, roaming the streets, speaking loudly in their eshay slang. They’re always pretty friendly, I’ve never had any trouble from them. The most trouble I’ve ever had from eshays is that they play loud Australian hiphop music on trains in Sydney. It’s mildly irritating, but far from the worst thing that I’ve seen.

So where are these dangerous eshays making the city unsafe? Do they only appear at specific times in specific places? Or is this just more, “kids these days,” crap? Or a convenient scapegoat?

What kind of event? What dress code?

  • If it’s “casual”, that’s fine
  • If it’s “smart casual”, it’s borderline, but may be OK depending on the crowd
  • If it’s “semi formal” or “cocktail”, it’s not appropriate
  • On the other hand, if it’s a jazz restaurant, that’s absolutely perfect

Definitely not too bright.

I don't think the poster is encouraging vigilantism. It's more warning people to be on their guard and not fall for this guy's ploy.

Just pickle my bones in alcohol
An amphora of wine at my head and feet
And then I’m sure my bones will keep

Uber is a scummy company with a history of scandals. Here’s a list from a few years ago: https://www.businessinsider.com/...

Their whole business model is to operate a taxi service while claiming it isn’t a taxi service, to avoid following regulations for taxi services. In cities where they’ve been been forced to follow regulations, they’ve lost their licenses to operate multiple times. For example:

  • Lost license to operate in London in 2017 and 2019: https://www.bbc.com/news/business-50544283
  • Can’t find a link at the moment, but they lost their license to operate in Việt Nam entirely for tax evasion and improper business registration

Uber under-pays drivers. With the rates they pay, driving for Uber is effectively a reverse mortage on your car. They prey on vulnerable people. Businesses that can’t pay a living wage shouldn’t exist. Remember FDR:

No business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country.

By living wages, I mean more than a bare subsistence level — I mean the wages of a decent living.

(1933, Statement on National Industrial Recovery Act)

Do not let any calamity-howling executive with an income of $1,000 a day, who has been turning his employees over to the Government relief rolls in order to preserve his company’s undistributed reserves, tell you – using his stockholders’ money to pay the postage for his personal opinions — tell you that a wage of $11.00 a week is going to have a disastrous effect on all American industry.

(1938, Fireside Chat, the night before signing the Fair Labor Standards Act)

I haven’t actively looked into GoGet’s dealings, but they don’t have the same history of well-known scandals that Uber has.

Quite a lot of their staff were affected by the COVID detention in the public housing towers in Flemington and North Melbourne. Now some local businesses and groups pitched in to help people out. Some examples:

  • Sikh Brotherhood were the first to start getting food to people in isolation
  • SES dealt with getting food and medication into the buildings while following biosecurity protocols
  • The local mosque on Boundary Rd coordinated collecting donations and getting them to people
  • The guy from Adam’s Fresh greengrocer helped deliver donated food (unfortunately he defaulted on the lease on his shop since then)
  • KFL Supermarket called all their affected staff for welfare checks, etc. and to see if there was anything they could do
  • CoHealth provided a huge amount of support
  • Coles, Woolworths and HelloFresh made regular grocery deliveries for all the affected people, on their own dime

On the other hand, Laksa King didn’t even call any of their staff for a welfare check, and tried to use it as an opportunity to profit. They tried to get people to buy food from them to then donate to their affected staff, then tried to play it as them being generous. It was totally callous and uncaring.

Also notably absent when it actually mattered were the local Việt catholic church Thánh Vinh Sơn/St Vincent’s. They did nothing when people actually needed it, then showed up afterwards.

The whole thing left a bad taste in the mouths of a significant chunk of the Việt community. It was one of those, “now you find out who your real friends are,” situations. The African community, the Muslim community, and “big business” did a lot more to help a brother out than the local Việt community. Also, props to the Sikh Brotherhood for almost instant response, despite not having much of a community connection there at all.

They’ve effectively privatised it. They’ve established a non-profit company called Building Communities they they’ve contracted out building and managing “social and affordable housing” to for the next forty years. The government will still own the land that the buildings are on, but housing will no longer be managed by Homes Victoria (which itself was spun off from the Department of Families Fairness and Housing Victoria to manage public housing). It all stinks, and it’s going to lead to worse outcomes for everyone.
