Dev of reitti here 👋

Reitti allows sharing data like live location between users. If you use the owntracks app, you would even see all users, which share their location woth you, directly in the app.

Else you can see them in reitti directly with their latest known location.

You are right, I missed that they are still open for the other services. I have mine running behind traeffik and did removed all port definitions.

I will change the compose file to only expose Reitti.

Thanks for the feedback🙏

This questions comes up every time. I copied the answer i gave the last time at
https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/s/SUjvuDXd3k

Yes, this comes up most of the time when I post about it. Which is totally understandable since looking at it from the outside, they do the same in the sense of being an alternative to Google Timeline.

I have a vision where Reitti should be heading and this is not the timeline part. It will always be there to look at it, see your movement patterns, your visits and so on. Also the live view part, where you can share your location with others, with other users, instances or via magic link is one essential part which will always be there. Lot of users connect via this to their friends and families which is awesome when Reitti can help with this.

But, the Geo location is only the underlying data we need to create something which helps me (and maybe you) in remembering things. I "suffer" from Aphantasia and I struggle to get to my memories without any external trigger and that is the reason I created Reitti. To have a thing, i can occasionally look at, bring in pictures and emotions back into my knowledge. Where memories is the first step towards that goal.

So, for me this is the main difference between these two. But do not take my words for granted, test them out and take the one you like more. Since I started Reitti 6 months ago (actually a little bit longer) I did not follow on other projects that much and maybe they all converge to the same conclusion.

I am a little bit hesitant in adding a comparison in the Readme since I do not want to compare Reitti with other solutions. What I want more than a comparison is to make the idea behind Reitti clearer so anyone can build its own opinion which one is better suited.

I hope I got my point of view transported. English is not my main language and I did not bothered to let some LLM look over it.

If something needs more explanation, feel free to ask me anything.

I try to be active on both. Reddit has the reach, but I like the vibe of this community on Lemmy. It is so much calmer and friendlier.

Over the last year, the community came up with some awesome ideas I incorporated into Reitti. It is easy to miss some of them. I try to add as much documentation as possible, but it is, on one side, hard to anticipate how users search for features and, on the other, not to miss some of them over time. Maybe it is a good idea to take some time and add all missing stuff since I am wrapping up the 5.0 release.

If I remember correctly, data sharing came as a suggestion on my first post here on Lemmy. Over the last year, I refined that, and now users on the same instance can share their data. You are even able to connect to users on other instances of Reitti and finally share your data via magic links.

I am really thankful for all the support Reitti gets, and the ideas of our users make a difference in how it is coming along.

I have no clue if a raspberry will handle it. There a a couple of services involved to make it fast, but they are then another burden like RabbitMQ. Which make ingesting data instantaneous but you need extra processing power to handle the queues. It all comes with a tradeoff.

For size, there is mainly the PostGIS DB. I just checked and my db is around 800 MB for roughtly 8 1/2 Years of data.

Photon (the reverse geocode enabled in the compose file) is another beast. For Germany it takes 14 GB of storage while running, if you let PARALLELL updates enabled you can double that every time the index is updated. But you can remove that from the compose file and rely on external Geocoders. It is described in https://github.com/...

Hello, thank you for your feedback.

In one of the next updates, editing functionality will be added. Perhaps I can also add a function to add points in between.

For my use case, Reitti already does a lot of cleaning up unrealistic or too dense data. However, sometimes it is missing a point or two. Especially old Google Takeouts or timeline data are notoriously bad. So, sometimes in my data, I visited Jakarta according to Google. I have never been there. The idea is that I should be able to delete that point or move it somewhere else.

This will come in one of the next releases. There is no timeframe right now, as I first need to do a little bit of planning, and to be honest, I need a break from coding for a week or so after putting the new map into Reitti over the last three months. I thought it would be easier, but there were a lot of quirks in Deck.gl and MapLibre.

Reitti on its own does not run on your phone. It relies on external apps to track your GPS location like GPSLogger or Owntracks. They will increase the battery consumption but I think it is bearable. I personally have setup GPSLogger to fetch every 30 seconds a GPS location and then sends it every hour to reitti. With that i do not see that more power usage. Currently starting to test how the power drain is with a 15 seconds interval.

😆 yeah, that would not be that much for a year. Be assured, I get out alot besides the job and working on reitti.

The project is translated using weblate. I started with english (like every developer) and german (which is my main language). One of the LLM then started with finish and french. I do not speak either of these so could not estimate how good this was. French is already re-translated completely by two fellow users using weblate. All other languages where also added there.

It is a good tool but has some quirks when merging is involved. But I could not find anything better. Sometimes I also use it to enhance german, and it is working fine.

Thank you :)

I understand your concerns, this is something every additional app would have to deal with.

For me it is ok to have GPSLogger running all the time, I think for what it is doing it is quite easy on the battery but I do not use my phone actively that much and I am happy if it survives a day which it does.

Thanks for testing that. It never occurred to me during development. I will investigate what the issue could be.

That is a nice question. I will not participate in the comparison but am here if anybody has some questions about Reitti.

One tip I can give, which makes switching apps easier, is: try to keep either the raw GPS files or make sure that your chosen solution allows you to export them. That way, you could import them later into another one.

If still available, reitti is able to import Google timeline data obtained via the Google Takeout. Sadly they dropped alot of user data earlier the last year. I was glad I, by accident, fetched it before hand.

Glad you like it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them.

I would try to use GPSLogger, it is capable of sending data to dawarich and is really reliable. AFAIK, the Owntracks app has a queue and normally sends the data back when it is online, but I also found that this is sometimes not the case, and there is no way of restoring it then. GPSLogger has the advantage that it stores the GPX file also on your phone; if something goes wrong, you can still grab that and upload it.

Colota also seems like an awesome alternative. I've only heard good things about it.

That sounds like an awesome idea, actually the data is stored for every user separately depending on the used api token or when you login and do a data import. I will create a feature request for it.

But bear in mind, reitti is not meant to be a real-time tracking app. At the moment, data is processed every 10 minutes.

I just wanted to make a joke that it is enough to put reitti one time into the update section. Then I saw that you also wrote a highlight piece about it ☺️

Thank you very much for that. And also thank you in general for the effort you put in the newsletter. I eagerly waiting every month for it.

Thanks :) As a German I really like the name Dawarich. First it sound really nice for me but also that "Da war ich" means "There have i been" in german makes, at least for me, an awesome project name.

Take this with a grain of salt because I have no idea what the plans are for Dawarich or have ever been and this is solely based on my external view. For me the main differences are:

  • visits and trips are our main data, everything else is just the way to calculate them. For Dawarich it looks to me, that it is the other way around. It displays all the location data in good way with the heatmap and so on but visits or places seems so tacked on. This should not be an offense against it. I actually still have an instance running and it was the main pushing point to finally start working on Reitti.
  • the sleek UI but this depends on your taste

In the end, they are not that far off. Maybe a matter of taste.

I would not say compete. They are different in how things are done from my point of view. I want to focus more on the visits we have done in the past to relive some lost memories whereas Dwarich looks more "technical" for me. I have no better words for it, I hope you get my point in what i am trying to achieve with Reitti. So there should be enough room for both 🙂

I also do not have any intentions to offer a hosted version in the foreseeable future or even anytime.

You can get data via HTTP into reitti. Registering reitti on a MQTT broker also works.
