Hey there! (developer of Thunder here)

I would just like to pop in and say congrats on getting Lemmur up and running! I'm happy to see more Dart/Flutter apps popping up. Since both Thunder and Liftoff use Flutter, this could also be an opportunity for our projects to help one another in good ways - maybe starting off with the lemmy-dart api

I am currently using a very basic lemmy-dart library that I built from scratch, but this could be the opportunity to migrate to using your fork

Hey! Thunder should not be collecting any user data. There is no tracking of any sort within the source code. Previously, Sentry was used for error logging, but even that has been completely removed from the most recent release.

There are definitely some permissions that are needed in order for Thunder to work.

  • Vibration is needed for Haptic Feedback
  • Storage is needed for media downloads although we are looking into ways to even restrict that to just photos
  • Network access is needed for internet connection in general

The Play Store release may be different as Google themselves may collect the data that you are seeing, but in general, there is nothing directly within Thunder's source code to track any user information!

Hey there!

Thanks for bringing this up. I do have plans to support PieFed in the future - I can't promise when it will happen, but I'm working on laying down the groundwork to better support other APIs (whether it be Lemmy, PieFed, or possibly another platform that shows up in the future).

Doing this will take some time though, as Thunder's internal logic was (and is currently still) heavily tied to Lemmy's APIs. The good news is that the upcoming v0.7.0 release will bring us a step closer to this goal. My (optimistic) goal is to have basic support for PieFed and the upcoming Lemmy v1.0 API by the end of the year.

👀👀Hey there, developer of Thunder here. It would be great if you could contribute towards the project! I’m still very much learning about Flutter/Dart and I’m sure there’s a whole bunch of things that could be improved!

Hey there! Thanks for bringing this up.

Right now, I’m not sure if adding another communication channel (e.g., Discord) for Thunder would be useful. We currently have three different channels for different purposes:

  • GitHub – For reporting issues, feature requests, and development-related discussions.
  • Lemmy – For general discussions, support, and announcements.
  • Matrix – For quick conversations and direct messaging.

Adding a Discord server (or something similar) would likely just increase the overhead for me, as I’d have to moderate yet another space. That being said, if there’s ever enough demand, I’d be open to creating one!

Hey! I'm sorry to hear that - I'll definitely be working on ways to improve the experience for swiping gestures, and I plan to also add in buttons as replacements for those who prefer to do it that way!

There's some things I can do to maybe help with swiping:

  • I can increase the distance between the first and second action, so that you have to be more deliberate if you want to downvote a post or comment
  • I am currently working on making the feedback of the vote to be instantaneous, which will let you know if you've performed the action! The actual voting will take some time in the background depending on how fast your instance is (but if something fails, it'll pop up with a message mentioning that)

Those two points will most likely come with the next release - as for the button actions, that one will hopefully come in a future update! If you have any other suggestions, please feel free to let me know 😄

For now, beta/pre-release stuff will be on GitHub until I figure out how to do it through Play Store as well. My thoughts:

GitHub:

  • Will always be here for those who don't want to use Google Play Services/TestFlight for preference reasons

Google Play:

  • General releases in parity with the general releases on GitHub/TestFlight
  • Beta stream for the pre-releases, in parity with pre-releases on GitHub

TestFlight:

  • For now, it'll only be for general releases since there's no way to easily create "streams" for people who want to be in the beta stream
  • Eventually, if possible, get it on the App Store for general releases, and then TestFlight will be for beta pre-releases

One more thing - the latest update removed the haptic feedback from the swipe gestures by accident. The next update will bring back that haptic feedback!

When you sense a small vibration, that is when you know that the action will be performed if you let go off the screen

Hey there! Main developer here 👋

Thanks for the mention! If you notice any bugs or issues, definitely reach out and let me know through our GitHub page or through our Matrix space.

I do try my best to check for issues on both Android/iOS on my personal devices, but it's difficult to account for all other devices (especially performance-related ones)

The testflight has experimental piefed support, don't think notifications work there yet.

That's correct! The TestFlight version has initial support for PieFed but push notifications are not available yet due to some complications.

I'll chime in on this topic since it's been getting a bit of activity. First, thank you for trying out Thunder! I appreciate all the amazing and supportive comments and it's been nice hearing them from the community. I would like to remind everyone to be civil and respectful for other lemmy clients. They're all being developed by people who have a genuine interest in lemmy as a platform and I'm sure they all want lemmy to be successful.

I personally think that Thunder still has a long way to go before I would consider it perfect. It's only been roughly a bit over a month since Thunder was first developed, and although there has been incredible progress so far, there are definitely a lot of features and bugs to work out! There are still UX gaps to fill in, missing features that have yet to be added in, and so on (that we can learn from all the other lemmy clients out there 😅).

At the end of the day, Thunder is a community-driven FOSS project, and will stay that way. All the work that is being put into Thunder are from individuals who take time out of their day to contribute towards the project. It might not currently have the same level as polish as other apps, but it will get there eventually with time.

I would just like to say a big thanks! Knowing that we're doing something right and hearing all these words is what encourages us to keep on going with this app (and also our own passion)!

In the end, all of us working on Thunder are doing it in our spare time so it's nice to hear these words of encouragement

For those on Android, theres a few things I would like to get your feedback on (I don't have a physical Android device so I cant see it for myself):

  • How does the icon look like to you? Has it improved from last time?
  • How is Material You? Does it work as expected?
  • Did the name of the app change to Thunder instead of thunder (capital case vs lower case)?

Same here, feel free to look around through Thunder's codebase as well to gather any ideas, and provide any suggestions or feedback! I've been learning a lot about Flutter and Dart through this so far, and it's been a fun time for the most part :D

Hey there! As others have mentioned, there is currently no way to reply to private messages in Thunder. However, I have heard this feature request a few times, so I'll try to increase its priority.

My priorities at this time is to add in additional comment moderator actions, so this will likely have to come after that is implemented. Hope that helps clear things up!

That’s a coincidence! I don’t believe that’s actually Thunder since that looks to be a Windows app (although you can technically build Thunder on Windows so there’s a very slim chance)

was wondering where this is originally from?

Here’s a bit of backstory!

The Thunder logo was inspired from other thunderbolt vector images that I encountered online. All of the images I encountered felt very “sharp” so I simply tried to adjust the corners to be more round.

So while there isn’t technically a “source” of the logo (at least that I’m aware of), I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s already something very similar! 😅

Hey there! Sentry is only used to detect errors automatically if they occur on your device. It is an opt-in feature, and you can disable it or enable it at any time. This information is useful for me to determine if there are any large scale issues that come up due to a recent release and allows me to quickly take actions which might otherwise take longer to detect.

I opted to include this as this is still a very early alpha release, and having this allows me to bring better and less error-prone releases to everyone! Eventually, as this app progresses from alpha to a more stable version, I will most likely remove it as it'll be less useful for me overall

Hey there! Good question - I can answer them for you

Are drafts stored indefinitely?

Right now, they are stored indefinitely. They’re stored similarly to how your app settings are stored, and the only way to clear them is to uninstall and reinstall Thunder.

If I keep creating new drafts without ever finishing them, will my storage get full?

That’s a possibility but it’s very unlikely that your storage will get full just from stored drafts since they’re just plain text. Text usually takes up very little space compared to other data (e.g., images)

Is there a way to see all my current drafts?

Is there any way to delete drafts?

If you go back to a previous draft, you can delete the draft but that’s all there is at the moment.

That being said, we are working on features for better draft management to allow viewing/deleting drafts. The related GitHub issue is here: https://github.com/thunder-app/thunder/issues/1375

Hopefully this answers all your questions!
