Gotta give it to you, you plugged away, learned, plugged away some more and got a really nice starting base for a setup. Now it's time to start burning time and money on ever increasing space, a docker stack, a more powerful server (leaving the pihole to handle the ads), and on and on lol. Welcome to the hobby!

This is becoming a losing battle. They are attacking vpns and the root servers all to protect European football.

Usually what happens is a simple set up of a laptop with Kodi and a 1tb external drive turn into a hobby and you end up with huge NAS set ups with docker stacks. It's so much less about about the actual content and more about the hobby. At least for me it's become that.

Lots of Jellyfin love in here, love too see it. The sever end of is great, the client end though... not so much. If you are just looking for a plug and go, plex has the maturity of their clients with a very workable backend. just about every device out there as an up to date official plex app, right down to a windows app if you really want it.

Again, no shit on Jellyfin here, Plex is a business after all.

Makes me wonder how much of this was due to IA having the federal deposit label now. That had to have chopped the lawsuit in half as they can legally hold all of that music. The confidential part speaks volumes.

The only one here answer the question about looking for content. The rest are great (plex + *arr stack myself) but it didn't solve the issue of WHAT media to add to plex/kodi/stremio/etc.

Need to be an *arr or another program we can docker to basically be Just Watch with a click and torrent search.

They have been since Napster. Netflix almost killed movie/tv torrenting. It was so cheap with so much content, it was more expensive to run an HTPC setup than pay like $5/month for NF streaming. Then every company wanted their own streaming service and ships reappeared.

It's seems like every time someone figures out the supply issue, they come along, put in a few road blocks and charge you money to get though to what you had before for free or way less.

To this day I still blame Lars. No talent drummer who's entire band was a success off the back of sharing their first EP which they SAID TO DO only to turn around and sue.

This is some really long winded post about digital preservation on original cuts (eg: star wars, dollars trilogy, etc...). This is nothing new at all, this type of thing has been going on since lucas fucked with star wars. If you are really into this kinda thing, give it a read. If not, maybe skim it, it's really long and pretty dry.

Why download though? Tubesites abound. VPN's are cheap af. Get cheap ass VPN, watch porn. Done. Even if the vpn is sleezy who cares, you just need it to show you are in a state that doens't give a shit about those kinda laws (MA in the US doesn't have those restrictions).

Also mentioned a hoard of times, yt-dlp works (just get the latest from github). Still, it's porn. Unless it's something ultra specific that you were looking for or something rare, just hit up a tube site.

I really don't see this as being useful for anyone outside of hard archivest. The bitrates are pretty trash. I guess if you just a setup with an incredible amount of music no matter what, this is for you. IMHO the meta data is worth more than these lower quality sound files although we have meta data for what's out there now.

Outside of that here is what and how they are going to release. I'm guessing this drop was their "popular" track drop. From their site:

For popularity>0, we got close to all tracks on the platform. The quality is the original OGG Vorbis at 160kbit/s. Metadata was added without reencoding the audio (and an archive of diff files is available to reconstruct the original files from Spotify, as well as a metadata file with original hashes and checksums).

For popularity=0, we got files representing about half the number of listens (either original or a copy with the same ISRC). The audio is reencoded to OGG Opus at 75kbit/s — sounding the same to most people, but noticeable to an expert.

I remember walking around my neighborhood with a box of floppies going from friend to friend making mass copies of games we had for the c64 (was popular among my friends). We were just sharing, didn't even think about piracy then. Cracktro's were just neat things to my tiny brain then, not "we cracked this, you pirated it!". I really didn't get that point of it being piracy until I hit a BBS outside of my normal area that had FULL PROGRAMS to d/l for free! Took a month and a day at 300baud but holy crap, that program costs literally over $1000 but there it is in all it's free glory. That was really my beginning into donning the hat and setting sail.

All you all know there are entire sites dedicated to cloud storage sharing right? We also have OD's and OGD's. Link shared GD's. None of this is new, it's been this way since you could drag anything down off a BBS or mainframe. We have been sharing in every manner you can think of since it's been possible, digital just made it dummy easy.

Even though prices are stupid atm, this is your push to finally spin up a local jellyfin instance. You can run this off an old laptop and an external drive. It won't be fantastic but it will work and you can look and giggle at the IP holders wringing their hands not knowing how to actually stop piracy. Hell, my entire docker stack (minus plex) is just on a pi. Starting off it's not too expensive. The expense hits when you turn it into a full blown hobby and you are looking at homelab setups ontop of your htpc setup.

Now, yes. Back in the day? Ehhh maybe not. Early files and torrents were super low quality, maybe had an RSS feed. Hell, the original client was one window with one d/l going. You had to launch another instance to d/l another one. Then Netflix happened and it was like "man, this is pretty cheap and the quality is better than i'm getting online" and the hat went away for a while. Now that we are essentially back to cable, out came the hat.

My god, it's so muddled and sloppy. It's something that a freshman would make in their first term photo editing. At least it's not Ai generated.... hopefully.

This is so true. I fucking LOATHE FB but our city has a fb group on it and it's dummy useful. I've tried to move them over to a hosted forum but only one person came. It's like people are just stuck hard on FB and won't ditch it come hell or high water.

That's a bit over the top for grabbing some text books. That's like, opsec for running an IPTV service or something... but it is possible, and easy. Whip up a vm with a linux distro, connect to an open wifi (vpn if you have one, if not who really cares), and download away. Blow away the VM when done.

Pirate -> Add to HTPC -> underwatched media to a jbod of old ass spinning HDDs -> unwatched/hard to find media to BluRay cold storage.

This was my fix also. Switched to my own router and no problems since then. Should really have bought one sooner honestly.
