I got talked into bankruptcy (by a bankruptcy lawyer, surprise surprise). It cleared $12k of credit cards and bank fees but not the then-$50k of student loans and the spending habits that were the real problem. Now I learned my lesson. No credit cards. Save up and pay. Have an emergency fund that can cover your expenses for months and months in the event you lose your job, or your most expensive unplanned repair. That's the real life saver.

“If it’s hot outside, we can raise the price of water and ice cream.”

Dude actually said that out loud. Wild. Teach me how to give that little of a fuck.

How do these things not have unbrickable A/B firmware partitions by now? Even I have that on a $2 microcontroller. Self-test doesn't pass after an update? Instant automatic rollback to the previous working partition.

I'm on the other side wishing peripherals would catch up and all become USB-C already. I'm tired of USB-A.

ITT: some people are mad the web became the application platform of choice, in part due to handy dandy cross platform app tools like Electron and accessible languages like JavaScript.

There is no perfect answer. Qt isn't using the platform's native capabilities to the fullest extent either. Qt requires a "wrapper" too--all those libraries your app depends on, to name a few (unless you got a commercial license and are compiling statically, you rich devil).

Let's celebrate the onslaught of apps that work with Linux instead of trying to scare off developers any more than Linux already did. Make love not war. <3

In my experience, Electron and other "web wrapper" apps run just fine and I have enough CPU and RAM to run a dozen of them alongside my 50 browser tabs. Slack, Discord, VSCode, Teams, IRCCloud, it all works fine. Hardware is cheap compared to my time.

No more biting down on my tongue or cheeks when eating. Most annoying glitch ever.

These fees are how they're paying for your airline miles and cash back bonuses.

Personally, I'm perfectly fine without a credit card. I don't care if I'm "giving up free money" because I know this is where it's coming from.

Well, then, they ought to drop enough dirt for me to patch it. You think I carry stacks of dirt around with me all the time?

Good luck getting all the developers to rewrite their apps. The only reason you had any apps was because it was based on Android so it was little to no effort to port. Going plain ol' embedded Linux is basically the death knell of your developer story. Source: been there, had no third party apps, switched to Android

Proud GitLab self-hoster here (for private projects). I'd love for someone to beat GitHub. The hard part is going to be replacing the discoverability and the network effect. I find GitLab to be a superior product, technically, but it doesn't matter much in the face of GitHub's momentum as the incumbent 800 lb gorilla.

  • Save an emergency fund of 6-12 months of expenses. You never know when the rug will get pulled out from under you.
  • Pay off all debts.
  • Save at least 15% of income into retirement accounts (not counting any matches).
  • Give to charity or random internet persons.
  • Buy a house.
  • Pay it off.
  • Max all retirement accounts, invest in some mutual funds, give more.

How is the 3G sunset not solvable by just swapping out a modem module for an LTE or 5G one and maybe installing some new modem firmware? A lot of cars are running a Linux kernel under the hood, so I'd think it's pretty well swap and go

I've been having this problem since 2016.

No matter how many filters you throw at it, there's always images, videos, and people self-censoring to get around them.

It's infected everyone and everything, like a virus.

Searching for a way out. I'm sure there's somewhere safe out there...
