Not that there’s a big overlap of people who care about those games and people who use Lemmy, but most people bought the DLC on deep discount. And they’ve stopped doing those discounts like they used to.

They also re-introduced premium currency to buy micro DLC, which is something they did with the previous game that was universally hated and they didn’t re-implement in the current one for a decade.

Is there anything in the structure or wording that gives it away? I don’t really recognize this as machine output like most slop posts

Huh, this one didn’t give me an immediate revulsion reflex. What makes this one obvious? I sometimes write meandering comments myself so maybe the style of this one is a little close to home

Typically it’s very obvious to me and I can even tell apart some of the models that have a relatively distinct style

These are the Things that Make a Man

Iron enough to make a nail,
Lime enough to paint a wall,
Water enough to drown a dog,
Sulphur enough to stop the fleas,
Potash enough to wash a shirt,
Gold enough to buy a bean,
Silver enough to coat a pin,
Lead enough to ballast a bird,
Phosphor enough to light the town,
Poison enough to kill a cow,

Strength enough to build a home,
Time enough to hold a child,
Love enough to break a heart.

I think you might have missed the original story. There was some fuckery going on with changes to the rules of what does and doesn’t get listed at IPO, seemingly designed to force the stock to (be allowed to) launch at a nonsensically high value on the indices, in turn forcing the least gamble-minded investors (which includes a fuckload of normal people via pensions, insurance schemes etc) into becoming bag holders for the most transparently greedy rug pull of all time.

I live eight thousand kilometers from the US, and have no vestigial belief in capitalism, and this made me sell my US index funds this week. What an irresponsible shitshow even if you believe in nothing besides capital, even if you are a true believer in this system.

The definition of being listed on any index isn’t waiting for someone to announce “I want each share to be worth ten trillion dollars! Actually no, eleventy billion dollars!” and taking that at face value. That’s why this is news. It’s not Mr Standard and Mr Poor sitting in an office and deciding they don’t like the stock.

As someone who has completely replaced Reddit with Lemmy cold turkey since the blackouts, LW is still absolutely massive and federating with them has made me feel much less detached from the ebb and flow of online culture even if it’s filtered through the self-selection bias of people who would actually sign up for Lemmy.

I think this entire fiasco is pissy, utterly unnecessary posturing by their admin. But my bar for whether someone is a full blooded apologist for crimes or just deeply socialized into accepting them is this litmus test: is this person genuinely in favor of me being murdered, or is this person simply German?

I am personally affected by the rapacious ideology that is Zionism. I cannot currently access my familial hometown, even though it’s north of the Litani, it’s unsafe. I am almost certainly in the Palantir repository of “fighting age” males. So I’m not just happy to ignore a distant problem. I don’t want to dox myself but I am a former emergency healthcare volunteer and had to be called in during that Wednesday two weeks ago to help with triaging all the injured. They were all civilians, many who who looked and talked like me, who spoke my exact dialect. I have personally lost four acquaintances in this war, all decent people, all civilians. Some of the beggar kids who I walk past on the street every day are also dead and I fucking cried looking at a cinder block where one of them used to sit. A building I lived next to as a student, three buildings down, in a safe fucking area in the middle of the city, got fucking erased. This is very real to me. I have witnessed a lot of human suffering on that Wednesday, about as much as during the entire hell pandemic + explosion summer.

My opinion is not more important because of my experience but I have had ample reason to examine who I’m willing to talk to and who I’m willing to avoid. Back on Reddit I would openly speak about this very sensitive subject in big threads, intentionally choosing more measured wording, and I would get a lot of positive responses from people who seemed to really not know the situation. Granted this was before the mask off phase of that place.

I think our instances, and Hexbear for that measure, are exemplary on this issue. Nobody is born deserving to be murdered. I also think wider, more conservalib users from the wider Lemmy ecosystem getting to see us unapologetically call crimes crimes, and genocide fans getting downvoted by everyone, including fellow users of their own instances, is very important. This is not an abstract political idea, this is a fucking excellent litmus test. Many of the cooler users eventually migrate to our instance, I think that’s awesome. I think being so willing to federate with mostly everyone above room temperature decency is important, let them see our politics, let them be mad that they have to confront horrible ideologies they have been born into. And if they voice support for this murderous ideology, or any other genocidal belief, in our communities, then our rules are clear. Let them feel confrontation.

That said there is one annoying Zionist user on our own instance constantly pissing in our nice community pool. This person has crossed the German line.

I don’t think we saw that with LW yet. I think nothing I’ve seen so far from their admins crosses the “Is this person evil or just fucking German?” line, specifically. The broader LW userbase is on the libby side but they are broadly well meaning and can learn and be valuable allies and friends. And the large volume of posts provides plenty of opportunity to have good conversations. I have a lot of goodwill for Hexbear, despite also not loving some of what is considered mainstream on there (although I understand it. Critical support is important. Ask ne how I fucking know. I still have a town for a reason.). But Hexbear is very insular. It’s the same 200 users most of the time. A lot of the discussion there is pretty good, and frankly CTH is probably the funniest community anywhere on Lemmy. Some of the most concise and accurate English-language writing on political currents in the Levant I’ve ever seen is on Hexbear. But I think our role as an instance is different. I like that we federate with both. I like that a lot actually. I don’t have one account for shitposts, one for memes, one for saluting the blahaj flag, and one for hanging out with the MLs. This is everything I liked about Reddit back in 2011 and better. As it stands, dbzer0 is the LW of the flotilla. Does that make sense? That might be unpleasant for some people, but I think that’s a strength. The gate is wide fucking open. Solidarity to me also means getting people on board. Genocidal ideologies hurt the people they’re sold to as well, they impoverish the world we share.

Until the LW admins do something much more stupid, I strongly vote Nay. If they do, I’m happy to respond accordingly. But I don’t think it’s hit that point, I hope it doesn’t. I think this is a good initiative but that it’s being deployed too preemptively. I hope this comment isn’t too all over the place, but I really have a lot of thoughts whenever defederation or Zionist Bar problems pop up.

I do think we should try mediating first if they block our sister instances, and only defederate if they become worse about this whole thing.

Sorry decent people of Germany. Not all Germans etc etc

I thought the Notepad > Wordpad > MS Word progression was pretty much perfect. A zero complication plaintext editor, something with a bit more formatting, and outright typesetting for print.

Granted I use a combination of Notepad++, Obsidian, and haphazard LaTeX venvs now so who am I to talk. I don’t represent most Windows users and especially not the Linux daily drivers. I’d like to think there’s still a lot of people in my situation.

It says a lot that none of the reasons I like Notepad++ were brought into Notepad when they changed it. A copilot button in the place where I write immediate notes and edit batch files? What could possibly be the use case? I just need it to be able to open massive text files and have a decent search UI and that’s it

It’s also funny because It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is still airing too, and that is massively more edgy than anything seinfeld ever did.

And that’s always been my argument when it comes to this particular dead horse. I don’t think any jokes are off the table, you just really have to make whatever discomfort you’re summoning be worth the punchline. The edgier something is the more it has to be funny to compensate, the point of offensive humor is to be funny not to offend, right? This has to be common sense. I don’t get how it flies over the head of so many people.

Hijacking your comment to point out that my community, Lebanese Christians, typically tend to have a bootlicking problem. And an unparalleled superiority complex. Apparently Vance attended a Lebanese church the night of the US election and people were acting like the US, in a righteous turn of the wheel of history, will finally turn a page and become an undisputed force for good (it will protect Lebanon(‘s Christians, only) and stop exporting the sex and the trans)

I know what you’re thinking. Surely this jackass on Lemmy doesn’t think the shitheads around him can outdo American exceptionalism. Oh baby.

(In the following rant I’m banging out bits of mainstream political and sectarian thought in my ethnoreligious group. I’m not endorsing these horrible ideas. Not everyone is going to tick all of these boxes, but the point is to give an overview for those who care.)

The body of my comment

Y’know how you do a census in your country? Any country. You count the people so you know how to set policy. We don’t do that here. In 1932, the French colonial government counted the population. 50% Christian. 50% Muslim. Our Parliament is split by sect and not just by district, so that means I can only vote for my district’s Christian seats (technically the seats for my specific flavor of Christianity… yeah).

Since 1932, I’m sure you’ll be shocked to learn, demographics have changed. Christian areas, with their higher rates of education and income, have not seen the same birth rates as other areas. The Christian population can also emigrate more easily to countries with higher standards of living. The reasons why (and mechanics of) the disenfranchisement of other communities (especially Shia Muslim communities) are a whole thing and I won’t get into it now. But as it stands, the Muslim population has grown considerably since 1932. Let’s say it’s 60% (it’s more).

So it’s illegal to check, because it would “upset” the “correct” balance of power. And it’s not just politicians. The average Christian will not only tell you “we’re” artificially holding on to power, but that it’s critical to do so because the other guys can’t govern.

It’s late here and I had a long workday so I can’t bang out the full rant here. But there’s a lot of cultural nuance that might be hard to grasp for outsiders. Whiteness as a concept is a fascinating social phenomenon. In the mind of the very sharpest tools in the shed, it’s a classical Europeanness, a type of inherent ability to do civilization. Lebanese Christians, generally, see themselves in this lens. We are, in some way, mythical long-lost Europeans, being crabs-in-a-bucketed back into a miserable existence by our misguided cousins. We gave Europe Christianity, our sacred ancient treasure. We gave it its fucking name. Oh you Americans think you’re white? You diseased misceganated mongrel barbarian pagans? We are whiter than you. We are not Arabs, we are Phoenicians, we are the true authors of history and the true creators of commerce and writing and civilization and— (for further reading, I recommend looking into Phoenicianism and Lebanese Christian Nationalism. The former isn’t necessarily relevant on the surface, but is a good representation of the hyperexceptionalist worldview. I veered a bit into hyperbole, but I assure you, I’ve heard the kernel of all of these from people I expected better of)

I don’t believe this, I hope it doesn’t need saying. In my view, we are normal people. Lebanese Christians have been no kinder to the people around them than the others have been to them. Same shit, different toilet.

No, literally, different toilet. The Muslims all have bidets. As does my “self-hating” Christian ass (haha ass). God help me if I need to take a dump in a public bathroom in “my” parts of the country. Why don’t we adopt them? Well, it’s a Muslim thing, so even if it’s cleaner, we don’t do it. Because we’re actually the clean ones. And they are dirty. Not like us. Not like the protagonists of world history.

You need to induce vomiting? Open Twitter and search for “Shia” or “Shias”. Look at what people around me think is funny. Twitter is a cesspit and has become worse lately, but Lebanese hate speech has always been overlooked by moderation and has had a decade of head start over what more people are dealing with now. It’s worse when you understand that they don’t even really necessarily hate them for their religion, this is at least partially hatred of the poor, the people who “proper” society has given nothing for a century.

I’m going way, way, way off the rails here. I appreciate that one person’s rant about his own community’s bigotry doesn’t even begin to explain a two millennia of self-propagating Sisyphean sectarian violence. I can go for pages and pages but the point I’m making is

This guy didn’t just think the leopards wouldn’t eat his face. He thought, in a world of leopards and gazelles, that he is the strong ranger with a gun (and cool sunglasses. His name is Bachir after all). It didn’t even occur to him, not for a second, that any of this could touch him. He thought it could backfire on the dumb hicks, but he’s special. He knew fully well that the administration he voted for was made of despicable people. He’s not the “dumb” conservative who thinks they have values or principles. He knew and understood, explicitly, the oft-repeated concept that “conservatism” boils down to drawing laws around people A to put people B above said law. It’s not a secret to him. It’s what he believes in.

I’m still not sure I’m being clear.

Due to his background, I believe he absolutely knew that people were going to get fucked with arbitrarily. And he explicitly thought he was deeper into the ingroup than even the average member of the ingroup and that he was actually untouchable. There’s every chance he’s a bigger bigot than any klansman would even know how to be.

End rant. Everything is fine. Don’t look up the size of the US embassy being built in my country. Everything is totally normal.

Come back next week for my celebrated other classic rants such as

“The Town Priest Refuses to Pray for Palestine and that Really Pisses Me Off Even Though I’m Agnostic (But Don’t Tell The State That or I Won’t Be Able to Vote or Get Married)”, “QAnon in the Middle East: a Mind-Melting Primer”, “Our Priests Generally Don’t Diddle Kids (So We Imported One Who Does)”, and the fan-favorite “The Western Christian Persecution Narrative Complex as Understood Through the Lens of Eastern Christians’ Very Real History of Horrific Sectarian Violence: Syncretism, Life, Death, and The Jews™”.

I had this as a kid. It absolutely did all of those things, and the intro cutscene showed this menu as just one nook in a giant museum with other things to see. I had a few of their other games as well.

I can all but guarantee that a lot of the curiosity and enthusiasm for learning that I had as a kid was directly thanks to these edutainment games. Compared to my overwhelming adult apathy it really stands out.
