Where are the photos of the document processed though? And if not on the phone itself, is the server backend open source as well? Can I self-host it? And is the data which is used to generate certificates deleted immediately or stored in the backend? I have questions.

SEPA is the direct banking standard in Europe. Basically every transaction between banks follows that standard. If you’re doing business in Europe, that’s the most direct way you can go. Many other companies and their transactions follow the SEPA standard somewhere anyway. An SEPA mandate is pretty safe for the customer, too. It can be canceled by the account owner at any time. It does not have any additional insurance layer, though.

Schleswig-Holstein therefore follows the general strategy to move towards an open source driven administration. In fact, several federn institution already migrated to the openDesk administration bundle (https://gitlab.opencode.de/bmi/opendesk/). Great!

I don’t think you are paranoid. This technology is creepy as hell. Almost all cars are connected nowadays and send data back to the manufacturer’s server—visible or not. In the best case it’s just the service history, in the worst case live positions and more. Some cars stop working if the server is shut down *cough. Cameras equipped to unlock based on a face record biometric data. And honestly, would you trust your car manufacturer (!) to handle your biometric data?

From an environmental physics point of view, this is not very weird: Warm air holds more absolute amount of water, leading to stronger downpours and longer dry periods. One could also say, the world is getting warmer and this a little “more like summer”. And strong rains converts to strong surface runoff. In other words: Strong rains causes your streets and fields to flood and that water raises the rivers rather than the soil’s moisture. And there we go: The soil is getting drier although there’s more total rainfall.

Clouds.

  • polar stratospheric clouds play an important role in creating the ozone hole
  • the highest clouds on earth are about 80 km high
  • in the mid-latitudes most rain is cold rain, that means it leaves the clouds as ice and melts on the way down
  • pure water droplets without an aerosol inside (cloud condensation nucleus) freeze at about -40°C, sea salt aerosols make cloud droplets freeze at about -38°C, …

And there’s much more to be found.

To my understanding, these are confirmed vulnerabilities and have been resolved in 7.1. I have not checked all of them but didn’t find any CVEs without a note on the fixed kernel version.

This is interesting. However, I am wondering how relevant this analysis really is. Is the compositor-related power usage relevant relative to typical user applications? And is the increased power usage by Wayland-based systems justified by other improvements?

TBH, I have no idea and should read this up but maybe someone can fill in some context?

Maybe the security expert could read the readmes in the repos first. From the iOS app repo:

The initial development release has reduced security, privacy, availability, and reliability standards relative to future releases. This could make the software slower, less reliable, or more vulnerable to attacks than mature software.

And further:

If you're planning to use this application in production, we recommend reviewing the following steps: […] The Pin storage configuration matches your security requirements, or provide your own by following this guide Pin Storage Configuration […]

So the text hints not at design flaws but at facts that are already stated in the readme. Plus, the major source for the article is Pavel Durov, who’s messenger is of course a standard in security and privacy.

So there seems to be no news but a lot of speculation by Durov instead.

SFOS is not an Android fork. As many classical Linux distros, it controls sessions through systemd, the compositor is Wayland and the standard c lib is glibc. However, compatibility with the drivers of many hardware vendors and certainly also running binaries build for Android require Android libraries and abstraction layers to be present. Sadly some Android libraries or suitable replacements where available are absolutely necessary to run a phone nowadays. Both hardware and software producers are so focused on Android that drivers / binaries for alternative systems are not offered. That also underlines that this is indeed a niche product. Disclaimer: I ordered one of the phones.

That’s a much reduced statement. Construction noise is indeed a massive disturbance, which is why there’s a lot of efforts on mitigation it. Once the plant is running, however, it has been observed to work as an artificial reef increasing the local populations. To increase the effect there’s some work on adding boulders in between the monopiles. Another reason is that power boats are (depends on country) often forbidden to enter which actually reduces the noise disturbance within the area. There’s also effects on some species (lower trophic levels) due to the local reduction in wind speed in the wake which modifies the amount of mixing in the surface. That is, however, an active field of research. Long story short: fields of wind power plants are depending on the current life stage a disturbance but have in some sites been observed to be the opposite once operating. A conclusion to only build them on land could hardly be drawn at this time.

To give that more context: The BundesMessenger is developed for secure communication in the German army (named Bundeswehr in German). So it’s most likely not only about cash but also about security. It’s e2e encrypted, can be federated to several locations, etc. Seems a smart move to me. Edit: Actually I’m mistaken. It’s for the whole public administration. Not only the army. Not sure how I got that impression. Argument holds, though. 🙈

I’m rarely ever going below 21 kmh average (!) on my 16km commute. Of course I am going slow where it’s necessary and dangerous and try to be as responsible as possible. Nobody wants to get hurt. But using 20 km/h speed limits beyond local hot spots would be very unrealistic given a road bike easily reaches 40+ kmh on flat terrain without a mandatory speed gauge. And the latter is also a crucial obstacle. How should speed limits be enforced when people are not forced to mow their speed? And if they are not, what’s a number on a sign worth? I am guessing not much.

For some reason I don’t find it very bizarre. I’d even speculate that a random human mind isn’t any less weird. Surly, the pathways of my thoughts are often very bizarre. 😅

Not a legal argument but what is the possibility of modifying and redistributing the software worth of the entire branding (!), etc. have to be kept intact. Doesn’t that impose limits on modifications in the first place? Doesn’t feel much like the idea of a viral copyleft license. Also, if the first thing after a prominent fork is starting a legal fight over subtleties in the license with the goal of preserving one’s brand, I’m not so sure why the software was distributed with an AGPL in the first place. The whole thing doesn’t seem to add up.

On flat terrain, 40 kmh are no problem for a road bike. Downhill, one reaches 60 without much difficulty.
Beyond the possibility of crashing, the fact that car drivers underestimate cyclists’ speed is actually quite a danger.

Standard procedure, no? We used to map non-standard keys back in the days. I’d probably map it to Super and use it for my key combinations for my most used software.

The article is unfortunately a stub. The original insight stems from the peer reviewed report of Tannu and Nair (2022) and is based on a meta analysis of several life cycle analyses. It’s actually cited and linked in the Seagate brochure:

https://hotcarbon.org/...

Long story short: The reason a combination of the higher production related CO2e emissions and the higher power consumption given the current power mix.

In general, setting up a client with POP3 rather than IMAP will move all the emails from the inbox to the client. Once they are in the client you can decide how to backup the archive, there’s plenty of options with varying performance and memory footprint. That sounds pretty much like what you would like to do in general.

Just for completeness: That of course also means that syncing to several devices and backups are now your problems to solve.

In any case, the initial download will take a long time either way if you have 20+ years and 10s of GBs of data. No way around that.

Appreciate the KISS perspective.

For me, the project management features of a forge are extremely helpful. Setting milestones, assigning issues to them, defining timelines and regularly reiterating the planning has proven to accelerate our work as a team significantly. This experience refers to huge code bases (climate models) and medium to large team sizes, though. And probably also my bad memory 😵‍💫

I suppose it’s always good, though, to evaluate how much management a code will actually need in the end, and what tools correspond to that need.
