As a rule (at least for me), never never ever accept take home assignments or tasks that either require full control of your pc, or requires you to pull some sketchy repository from GitHub.

That’s one way to get infected with malware and potentially have your data stolen.

If you have to absolutely do this, do it on a VM.

But 99.99999% of the cases, there’s no need to install control software to a pc or having a 3rd party lib installed.

If a recruiting company requires this, then it’s a red flag.

You did well. You’ll find something soon.

Stay strong!

Depending on your question, maybe you have a lemmy group (sublemmy?) for the tech you are working with.

Or you can try ask here.

Myself and others can try and help you.

So what they doing is basically piracy.

And not just them, any AI in that so called “race” is allegedly doing it.

So why do we get punished if we download something from the Internet?

Be careful!

Author made an announcement that Smartube may be compromised.

Read his notes.

Someone please explain to me this:

If you’re an Apple or Google play developer, if your app steps out of the line by violating a single policy, your app gets instantly removed, then you need to make an appeal, blah blah blah. It’s an headache.

And yet, Grok is allegedly (never saw those generated images, just reports) creating these inappropriate images and still available in app stores.

Shouldn’t Grok be removed from them?

For streaming, if you like documentaries, I recommend arte.

I really like their app and diversity of subjects.

edit: For smartphones, I'm typing this from my Sony Xperia flashed with SailfishOS, same OS that Jolla phones have.

The reality is it’s incredibly difficult to cut ties with the Meta tech, as we got so used to it since the Facebook early days, then WhatsApp, then Instagram, etc.

There are alternatives but to convince half world to change is a huge task. Human Beings resist change by default and stick to something that works.

It’s also convenient because you can create an event and your friend are right there to be invited, so it’s an effortless task.

If you want an alternative you need to have something convenient, effortless and very easy to use.

Something like an app that lists events in your area, you select one event and then share it with your contacts. Or an app that shares integration with Facebook but does create invites outside Facebook.

There are plenty alternatives and ideas.

Hmm… are you sure?

In their docs they say it uses the Linux Kernel and bridges other Linux libraries including those used in Android.

It does provide a way to install Android apps in a sandbox.

They have their own hardware phones and do support some Sony Xperia phones, which is the one I have.

I’m test driving Deezer as Spotify alternative.

Looks really promising. You can even import your Spotify playlists and music to Deezer.

Portugal used to have a distro called Caixa Mágica (Magic Box), that was mainly used for kids in school, usually in dual boot with Windows. This used to be the way kids would have access to the Linux ecosystem for the first time.

Also some government branches also used it as alternative to Windows, I believe.

But since Caixa Mágica was a government venture, they made it proprietary, so it’s not widely available to download.

Also, I have no idea if this distro still receives any updates and improvements.

Some bit of history, certainly.

I said this on Reddit and will say here as well.

As an European, I have nothing against Americans as individuals that like us, are shocked and troubled to what is happening with your current Administration.

And generalising that all Americans should mobilise and fight against their government is not as straightforward as many people here think.

Like us, you guys have families, kids and pets that want to stay united and protect what is most important for you: your family.

But I do have issues with your government and those who support it.

I don’t trust your government, people that support it, your tech infrastructure or any company that aligns with this whole mess.

And that’s why I’m migrating everything to Europe. From cloud, to tech, to operating systems, to socials.

That’s why I just created my Lemmy account, and considering deleting Reddit.

I’m still stuck with Apple’s ecosystem, but will find a way to break free.

I’m a software developer and will start developing apps that will serve me and potentially others, but will be based in Europe and will not depend on others that in any moment can cut off the access just because…

US tech is a big pile of garbage.

All of it is to make you addicted, to track you, to influence you, to collect all sort of intel about you, and then use that against you. And they will serve you ads as the cherry on top.

For me they can all disappear and be gone. There are plenty of activities (internet or otherwise) that can be done without that pile of shit.

I have Proton with custom domain as email service, I have my own encrypted backup in an European VPS, have my own private cloud also in European VPS.

Don’t need US garbage.

I’m using Qwant and have no complaints so far.

In terms of search results it’s quite accurate and I’m happy.

But time will tell if I stick with it or not, as for now I’m still test driving it.

Tuxedo laptops seem like they have a solid build.

Nice design and I think they are based in Germany.

They even provide their own OS which is based on Ubuntu.

I’m also onboard doing this and I’ve been doing what I can.

I use Proton mail with custom domain, and Proton pass and basically all Proton apps.

Got a 2nd hand phone where I flashed sailfish OS.

I have my own private cloud using Hetzner VPS and backed up everything from iCloud into my own cloud.

I’m also a software developer and will start soon working on some projects, but still need to come up with a plan.

For now I’m just migrating everything to existing European alternatives.

Any ideas for future projects just share here.

You are definitely not alone, my friend.

Born in Portugal, but due to some traumatic events and childhood traumas, I don’t like living there. And just don’t fit in with their personality and lifestyle.

I live in the UK for 10 years now and honestly I like it here, and feel much better here than my home country.

Try having some local friends and reflect how you can integrate more. It doesn’t need to be a a big change. Just small changes.

Funny enough, there is a Portuguese singer that sings: “… I am well where I am not …”

I guess it’s the case for me, you and many people.
