She got a job working in a corporate office for a big company. This is pretty typical of not-retail-worker-salary beating out public sector nine times out of ten.

Why would someone ever be a teacher for <50k? Anybody with an education background can move to Seattle, Washington (or other state close to big city pay) and be a corporate trainer and move up to a director level role and get paid many times what they would ever be paid as a teacher...

...except so many want to stay near family, not be near a big city, can't move because of xyz, want a couple months off each year.. etc etc etc.

To quote somebody: Schools should be palaces. The competition for the best teachers should be fierce. They should be making six-figure salaries. Schools should be incredibly expensive for government and absolutely free of charge to its citizens, just like national defense.

Just isn't that way today and there is a big political and economic mess in the way of getting there.

Christina Elson, the executive director of the Center for the Study of Capitalism at Wake Forest University, told Business Insider that many young people had embraced an idea she calls "safety capitalism."

Ah yes, the executive director for the center for the study of capitalism says young folks want capitalism.

Come the fuck on.

It's supposed to be a nonprofit benefiting humanity, not a pay day for owners or workers. The board isn't making money off of it.

Giving microsoft control is a bad idea. (duh?)

Giving a single person control is a bad idea, per sam altman.

Does anyone not think Microsoft is going to use all their cloud data for training language models?

"We promise not to" doesn't seem realistic to me. Proving they used it is impossible.

I mean sure I guess... but brave as a browser is atrocious. I don't trust their bullshit at all.

After all who doesn't want a crypto wallet in their browser? that's the safest place for it right?

I don't think being fickle and being competent are necessarily linked.

Some of the best workers i've met over the years are making way less than some of the worst workers i've met, just because the ones who could talk the talk and play the bullshit made way more money and swap jobs way more often.

The highest paid company hoppers are undoubtably the first ones to go, that doesn't mean they are the most important, talented people though.

Jesus christ these headlines mislead everything.

They were using machine learning to try and figure out what people were buying. Machine learning has lots of errors until you train it. The "hundreds of workers" were training it by telling it what each thing was. E.g. it was creating training data for it to learn from.

The goal was to train ML enough so that humans were rarely necessary, obviously.

Slow your roll captain conspiracy. That sounds like lunacy.

It's way more likely that illegal aliens transported this ship under the cover of night to cover up the melting of the steel beams by jet fuel. They don't just crumple like that on their own after all. We've known all along these cargo containers are hollow on the inside.

Trump also repeatedly claimed that if he were president, there would be no war between Israel and Gaza. “It would have never happened if I was president,” he said of Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack against Israel, in which more than 1,100 Israeli and foreign nationals were killed. “They wouldn’t have done it to me, I guarantee you that. They did this because they have no respect for Biden and frankly they got soft,” he added.

Reddit is too big to fail, they have achieved critical mass. Keep in mind facebook is still around despite being a reviled company, and instagram certainly hasn't had a mass migration off of the platform either.

At the end of the day Lemmy isn't a replacement to reddit yet. It depends entirely upon it getting traction which thus far still hasn't occurred - we are not at critical mass yet. I hope it happens but there are many reasons why this site could fail even after reddit's admin blunders. Too many people are apathetic to the changes and not all of them are lurkers who do not post or comment.

Today you can't just stop using reddit either, especially for google searches. Too much content is ONLY on reddit. It's a huge problem. We really need a wikipedia style reddit where it's not for profit and still moderated for content.

I would like to propose an alternative solution: Force broadband providers to offer low cost service to families that need it. Don't subsidize it, just force it.

Internet connections cost next to nothing to maintain. The telecoms can afford it.
