We should always add a mental asterisk to the names of male researchers who discovered things while women were oppressed.

That said, this meme is playing loose and fast with the specifics, which undermines that important message.

Just picking the first one:

Payne's work was her Ph.D. thesis and Russell did not tell her not to publish it, her advisor did. The advisor told her not to rock the boat in her thesis. This is good advice that even Einstein was given. Payne, badass, declined.

When Russell later reproduced her research, he cited her thesis as the "most important research" he'd seen on the subject.

The real snub with Payne is that her title was "Technical Advisor" for 20 years despite being well regarded as a full time professor. It wasn't until the 50's she was recognized as a professor, when she was also made chair of the department.

It's true, but note that Allan received a reduced sentence for testifying against the actual mastermind of the fraud, who got 30 years.

In summary, a bunch of 60 year old C developers with social deficits hijacking the conversation when he gives a talk or tries to get anything done. E.g. the link was people interrupting a QA session to complaining "I don't want to learn Rust".

Zigbee or really any Bluetooth alternative.

Bluetooth is a poorly engineered protocol. It jumps around the spectrum while transmitting, which makes it difficult and power intensive for bluetooth receivers to track.

10+ YoE here.

Companies' hiring processes have become very slow. I applied and got interviews with 4 companies. I only got offers from 2 of them because the others were so slow. Meta was the slowest, 6 months to first interview.

That said, the offers were $800k/yr and $500k/yr total comp so I can't complain. The catch was mandatory in-office in downtown SF. I'd have to move. It was a hard decision if I'm being honest.

Property tax is the big thing that forces people to engage with capitalism against their will.

Without property tax, you could live off-grid for eternity. But with property tax, you always have to earn money, and the people that control that money therefore control you.

Honest question, why does the fediverse like firefox so much? This is not a common opinion to have on the internet, but everyone here and on mastodon seems to have it.

Re 1: People keep lumping Google with Amazon and Meta, but Google does not sell your private data and alerts you if it finds out the government to accessed your data. People keep assuming that because the general tech community sells data that Google does it too, but check their privacy policy or just ask anyone who's worked there. They don't.

User data at Google is locked up tighter than fort knox. That's why the Snowden leak was such a huge deal, because the NSA was taking advantage of a security flaw that Google didn't know it had to scrape user data. Google patched it immediately after they found out.

Amazon, Meta, and Uber, are much less scrupulous.

Nit: One engineer at a company saying something is not the same as that whole company saying something. I wish they would just say "Google employee insists..."

I feel enlightened now that you called out the self-reinforcing nature of the algorithms. It makes sense that an RL agent solving the bandits problem would create its own bubbles out of laziness.

Maybe we can take advantage of that laziness to incept critical thinking back into social media, or at least have it eat itself.

They'd have to block all investment platforms. Even ETrade and Chase have ads like that.

More details from the article:

  • In the 1920s, many Mexicans were fired from their jobs due to intense anti-immigrant racism and the great depression.
  • Private and city local agents would show up at some people's door with train tickets in hand, and say "pack your bags and get on this train."
    • Hence the air quotes around "deported".
  • At first, most American Mexicans left "voluntarily":
    • They wanted to escape racism and find work.
    • The Mexican government promised them free land, as well, further pushing many to leave.
  • Many of the American citizens that left were the children of non-citizens, whose parents made them leave.
  • It wasn't until later the federal government got involved, and comparatively fewer (90k, still a lot) were deported forcibly.

Interestingly, this is a common trend when we look at anti-immigrant action. The federal government is rarely the actor that does most of the damage. Most of the action comes from extremely racist MAGA-type populists going around burning property and attacking people en masse. See also the Chinese Exclusion Act.

I just learned about Zig, an effort to make a better C compatible language. It's been really good so far, I definitely recommend checking it out! It's early stages for the community, but the core language is pretty developed and is a breath of fresh air compared to C.
