Honestly, as a vegan, I find the idea that we're "enslaving minds" with AI to be highly suspect. A lot of the idea that AI is sentient is also buying into the idea that AGI/ASI is real. Many people, myself included, either don't believe it's real or don't believe it will be achieved with our current set of technologies, namely LLMs. Once I understood how LLMs work, the mystical idea of these chatbots being sentient fell apart for me.

Even if it were a possibility, we KNOW animals are sentient and being abused right now. We don't have to guess at that.

Everyone has their own amount of activism they can put into the world and stay sane and healthy themselves, and for most vegans, they are going to dedicate that energy towards animals. That's not to say we can't advocate for multiple things at the same time, but for myself, there's other solid reasons to dislike AI in its current form (environmental damage, exploitation of labor/authors/artists, generated child sexual content, etc) without getting into philosophical debates about the nature of software being sentient.

I think it's entirely possible to have AI/LLMs ethically. If we didn't live under capitalism and workers and artists didn't have to worry about feeding and housing themselves, if we weren't dedicating our entire economy towards it at the expense of everything else, if we weren't using an inordinate amount of limited resources like gas and water, if the models and the data they were trained on was completely open, if everyone had equal access like a public library, for starters.

While everybody is laughing at the meme, hundreds (if not thousands) of horses are killed every year simply because they cannot race or are not profitable, many as young as two years old. https://horseracingwrongs.org/

To mention nothing of other cruel practices, among these forced separation from their mothers, nose chains, blinders, whips, over breeding, etc.

Breeding these animals is not funny, it is not a joke, and these breeders are awful people.

They are referring to the Blitzchung incident, when China illegally took full control over Hong Kong before their agreement to let it be autonomous expired. During the mass protests a Hong Kong esports player voiced support for the protests on a Blizzard livestream for an event and was banned from the tournament and was forced to forfeit prize money he already won: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/...

Edit: also, disapproval of the CCP =/= dislike of/racism towards Chinese people

At least one of the main features is seamless suspend/resume. Not sure what the state of that is on Windows but I've seen a lot of people mention that SD feature specifically.

As a fellow omnivore trying to eat more vegan/vegetarian recipes, I think rainbow plant life on YouTube has the best recipes that I've tried. If you've read Salt Fat Acid Heat, most/all of her recipes are based on that technique/ideology. Her red lentil curry is really good and I make a double batch about once every other month to keep in the freezer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHRyfEbhFFU

I live with people that don't like coconut milk so I just use a mixture of heavy cream and milk. I also sub half of the red lentils for brown lentils for extra fiber.

Employed X-ray tech here, this is mostly accurate, but most relevant academic bodies, in the US at least, actually recommend not shielding patients anymore, since it usually leads to slightly higher doses depending on the particular exam.

Collimation of the beam is sufficient to reduce dose with modern equipment.

That being said, when the patient is being X-rayed, such as in surgery, the primary source of radiation for everyone else is the patient. Since that cannot be collimated, lead aprons should be worn, and should be facing the source of radiation (i.e., don't turn your back when the beam is on, or wear a full wrap lead apron). Even that being said, the amount of radiation is low for almost everything except CT scans and IR (heart cath/embolization etc) cases.

Right, but the animal would not have been named that if the people breeding these horses saw them as individuals instead of objects. "Just laughing at the name" completely ignores literally everything else connected to the name.

Yeah, and the Wendy's might as well serve the flesh of the slaughtered horses as well.

Dismissing serious, actual life or death concerns with statements like "sir this is a Wendy's" only serve to further silence a group of individuals suffering without a voice.

When I initially commented on this, literally none of the 20+ comments acknowledged the horrible reality the horse in the photo is/was forced to endure.

If I posted a photo of a starving child with a funny name and everyone was simply laughing at the meme, would you say nothing?

I was moreso referring to confinement to a small dirty space (see above), the mutilation of baby animals without anesthetic, the live maceration of baby male chicks in the egg industry, the mass breeding and conveyor belt murder of millions of sentient beings, the selective breeding that has caused a few week old broiler chicken to be equivalent to a 300 lb human toddler, etc etc.

I always say no because receipts have been shown to commonly contain BPA and other cancer-causing/endocrine-disrupting chemicals that can be absorbed through your skin. The data seems to be mixed on whether or not the dermal uptake is significant enough to pose a threat, but I just don't want to take the chance.

If you have to have a receipt, try to touch it for the least amount of time possible, avoid touching the printed side, and keep it in a container or Ziploc bag in your main bag or somewhere else.

Chiming in here to say that animal agriculture is the #1 cause of deforestation, through clearing land for pasture and feed crops. The most powerful thing we can do on an individual level to reduce deforestation is to switch to a plant based diet, and encourage others to do the same. https://ourworldindata.org/...

I've been doing this with my Kindle, and it works well too. I saw this video earlier and I think I'll still do it because (1) I hate the popup every time I go to the library that asks me to connect to WiFi/login to account, and (2) Koreader features seem really nice. Still though, not enough of a big deal to make me do it today :P
