I just listened to the latest Words For Granted podcast episode and it was about the book Enough Is Enuf which talks about the history of the spelling reform movement going back to the founding fathers. I thought you might be interested in it too so I went back to tell you.
I'm happy to hear that, thanks for letting me know! I hope you'll enjoy it all the way to the end.
When I started reading the first book, the last one wasn't published yet so I had hope that's isn't an ongoing series but it's not.
He also talks about the Northern European life cycle is in part what gave way to capitalism. In the late medieval times, it was common that every craftsman had their own workshop and before they could afford one, they want around and worked for wages until they could buy their own. So wage labor was seen as a juvenile phase that has a value in its own because it's pedagogical. Later, people were stuck in this phase and it was still seen as an end in itself. This is in addition to what Marx and Weber had to say about the beginning of capitalism.
Fahrenheit 451 on the other hand is about people only watch TV nowadays, modern art is too abstract and minorities censor racist books. I'm surprised the Right doesn't use it but I guess they lack the reading skills to realize this is actually for them.
I don't know about Portuguese but there is a meme about English:
[UK flag] English (traditional)
[US flag] English (simplified)
Which is not really historically accurate because both standards developed more or less simultaneously after independence and before standardization, the variety was greater than the difference today. But I digress.
