Couldn’t agree more, we need to continue to attract the kind of people who would really be able to help grow this kind of community, so if you have friends you think would like this, try talking to them.

Drop a couple bucks into support the admins and servers - think about streaming services you pay for and use less. $5-10/month to donate to a service you are using daily is pretty cheap considering.

Beehaw is a community that wants to create a specific type of experience for its users, it wants to create a safer space and has stricter rules.

I think it’s personally a non-issue that people get riled up about. They’ve temporarily defederated from lemmy.world because of the large spikes in new users and wanting to have the moderation tools necessary to handle that while keeping their community the way they want it.

There is a subset of new Lemmy users who think this experience needs to be Reddit 2.0, that it needs to be perfect and totally smooth for new users, or else it will fail?

Personally, I don’t agree. I don’t want Lemmy to be Reddit at all. In the last month, I’ve found that I didn’t realize just how bad my Reddit experience had become. I’m okay with the experience being a little rough around the edges here and adjusting together. It has become obvious based on how good my interactions were here. How solid and interesting the content was. I’m not fiending for my specific subreddits, I’m good to move on and find new areas to focus on the internet.

I have a separate account for Beehaw, all the iOS apps already have way way better functionality than the Reddit official app, I can seamlessly switch between accounts. It’s been absolutely amazing to see how much this site and experience has evolved in one month. I’m super excited for the future here.

100%, 12 year daily reddit user - feels like I’m out of a bad relationship. I moved all my third party apps off three weeks ago and have replaced all my time with Lemmy and the Fediverse.

I didn’t realize how poorly the experience had degraded - scrolling content mindlessly, most interactions were dull and sometimes weirdly antagonistic.

Conversely, my experience on Lemmy has been interesting content with more depth, connecting with people in a warm and welcoming way. I don’t expect this to become reddit - I wouldn’t really want it to.

I am excited for a future here as the third party apps are removed last this week and we can start a new adventure together.

Lemmy reminds me in a big way of the internet in 2000s, things are still being set up and figured out. It’s going to be a while till there’s a reliable and polished experience and that’s actually a good thing. It takes time to build something great and there’s a lot of a learning curve.

Patience is a good thing to practice now and hopefully the new user base can find the great things we’ve seen with Lemmy and have some patience as things stabilize.

believe it or not, reddit was a lot like this 12 years ago. I have found people are a lot kinder and warmer here than reddit had become. Welcome!

I think this is a little overblown. How long were you in reddit for?

A lot of the people coming over here were on reddit for 10-12 years, back in the old days. People are adjusting. A big majority of the new users on Lemmy aren’t interested in going back to reddit at all, nor do we want Lemmy to be reddit.

Reddit has degraded significantly overtime, I think that the API debacle was a massive wake up call. People are still adjusting and there is a very big wave of new users on July 1.

But many of us came over in early June when the changes were first announced. I haven’t been back to Reddit since and I have been a lot happier. I honestly found that my interactions have been very pleasant here, the content has been deeper and more engaging, overall I’m really excited for the future.

Reddit was fun but it’s time has passed for a lot of the users here.

yes this is a good take. So far across beehaw, lemmy, and kbin I have had much more meaningful interactions with people.

After 12 years, I’m done with Reddit, the writing is on the wall - they are catering to the Facebook style and type of user. Their major focus is users scrolling their feeds. There is no place for them there as time continues on.

I am looking to a future where I can contribute and get something different out of my time on the internet. it doesn’t bother me that every community hasn’t migrated, I’m trying to spend my time learning about new ones and expanding my horizons.

This is a complex issue!

On one hand, I’m not sure what kind of consistent and great results people are getting with GPT today. It’s an amazing tool but it is still lacking in a lot of ways.

Into the future? I think a lot of the jobs will change dramatically and entirely new ones will exist.

Adaptation is necessary in life, a disruptive technology has been created and we are just starting to understand it.

I feel like the API debacle made me realize I had Stockholm syndrome. I look back and realize I would write and delete comments because I would be sure I’d have another redditor debating or nitpicking something unimportant, a lot of interactions were just antagonistic. Even a good amount of content was kind of boilerplate, a formula of what was going to get the most upvotes.

If i never see a post about people complaining about karma or other meaningless internet points again, it’ll be too soon!

Really incredible to see these snap shots of people’s lives. To think whole families, great days, and tragedies all sprung up around these people in the time span. Life is a mysterious journey.

this is really awesome, never seen anything like this and love how this relates to the traditional alignment but is it’s own separate thing!

If there was an axis, what would it be here??

couldn’t agree more, interactions are meaningful, content is actually good. Didn’t realize how bad reddit got over the last decade.

this is an interesting post-reddit effect, we have people of all different types and motives seeking new places.

A lot of people seem to think this is an all out battle between a new community and reddit. Like we have to beat them or something. The situation with reddit is not a win-lose, reddit would never go dark overnight. A lot of users are just over reddit and moving on. I personally don’t care about lemmy becoming the next reddit nor do I really care what happens to them.

A big difference to me with this migration is the instances seem to attract like minds. This is going to be a very interesting event to watch how the fediverse grows and changes.

The other thing is why this timeline? I think it’s because of the downgrade of the valuation on the IPO.

It seems like there are investors and other forces plus the absolutely awful communication and leadership from Huffman.

They are in this spot where people who don’t seem to understand Reddit are making decisions about it.

Even if this doesn’t “kill” reddit, the decision making has been very obviously hostile toward its users and future.
