Lemmy 0.18.2 (which sdf is on) came out 29 days ago. I wouldn’t consider sdf Lemmy to be dying because they don’t jump on every point release the second it comes out. Production system shouldn’t rush out releases unless it’s patching zero days. To talk about needing to migrate off or the platform dying because they are on a release not even a month old is a bit hysterical.

As someone that spends a lot of time on a vintage machine using sites like 68k.news and frogfind.com , I think it would be really sweet if there was a non JavaScript front end that could render correctly in something like Netscape 4. I know I’m a weirdo, but there’s a lot of weirdos like me on SDF :-)

Keep in mind that newegg sold out in 2016 to a Chinese company. They used to be great but have been going downhill ever since. I only purchase in person at my local MicroCenter and just pull out my phone and have them pricematch. They will pricematch anything sold and shipped by Amazon for example. Dunno if you have a local store, but that's the way to go.

For sure, turn off wifi on the tv and also block it's MAC address at the router. Plug in your trusted streaming box of choice via HDMI and only use that (Nvidia Shield, AppleTV, Roku, AndroidTV, Homebuilt Plex box, etc).

Hey, I like that we're throwing ideas out about how to make the fediverse better. But as someone that develops software in the enterprise and works with product management, putting on my user hat here my first question would be: What problems does this solve for? Upvotes/downvotes and moderation weed out bad actors and highlight good responses. You can paypal/venmo/zelle/even send crypto to donate to server hosts pretty easily.

Personally, I'm not interested in anything having to do with a ledger or currency. Keep web3 dead and buried where it belongs. Isn't voting with currency for the community just a DAO? And we've seen how sideways those go. Not everything has to be a stock market/casino.

And more currency doesn't mean better responses or more valuable content. We see this with money in politics, where those with the most currency get to be the loudest voices and push their agenda the most. That doesn't mean they are pushing quality or fact.

But I am curious about starting with the problem first rather than the solution. What do we see as something needing to be addressed? What would an acceptable outcome look like? Once those are defined, then look to what solution best fits.

It really was. It was a time when most didn’t have computers at home. Once a week you’d get to go down to the computer lab and play educational games from MECC. Oregon Trail being the most popular of the bunch.

I have a similar story. Back in the 90's I'd go to the library and one of the terminals available auto dialed and logged into gopher (being that this was MN and gopher was home grown). One of the menu options eventually ended me up at another college that had muds in its telnet link sections. But you couldn't really sit and monopolize a terminal at the library. I did see though the phone number written on the modem. So I dialed it from home with my 2400 baud modem. It would just land me at a > prompt. No regular commands worked. But I had remembered that the gopher server was consultant.micro.umn.edu . So I typed that in at the prompt and voila I was connected. The curses client for gopher loaded up the mother gopher site. I found my way to that college with the mud list and played quite a bit. Later I discovered by accident I could just ^C out of the curses client and be dropped to a limited privilege command shell. but it had telnet. So I could just go straight to the muds.

Later I learned from the U of MN gopher site that I could get an alumni account for a few bucks a month. Well, they offered alumni accounts anyway. I hadn't actually attended. I printed out the paper form and mailed it in, just checking the box that said I was an alumni. apparently they didn't check if I actually was, because from then on I had an alumni account. Which didn't really give me anything new except an email address. And I could "officially" dial in like I had been. but I felt like I should at least be paying something.

Have you ever seen that movie Don't Look up? It's a great watch. Even in the face of a planet destroying comet heading for earth, the conservative were all "You know what, I'm FOR all the jobs the comet will provide! Don't look up! Don't look up!"

I'm locating communities with https://browse.feddit.de and just subbing. I had prob 50 or so on Reddit. Prob will end up with the same here.

I'm using https://browse.feddit.de to find them. The search box has been getting a workout from me. Copy the link of the community, paste it in the search box, and then you can join it even if it lives somewhere else.

If WinNuke rings a bell. You remember the fun :-)

Open a small program. Type in the IP address. Click Nuke. Target PC immediately shuts down. While it's rebooting you grab it's IP address as your own so it can't rejoin the network. Worked great in a building where every machine had a predictable fixed ip. Some good teenage mayhem.

Supra 2400, to LineLink 144E, to Practical Peripherals 28.8 (all of these external). Being a kid I was limited to upgrading when birthday and holiday money was saved up.

To one way broadband with this weird box containing a 56kbps modem you plugged a phone cord into for the uplink and a 1.5mbps downlink over cable coax. Bi directional broadband wasnt available yet.

When I clicked through I was thinking more like $8-$10 bucks (price of an on-sale Udemy class). But $99? Yikes.

Spacebar to preview, command-spacebar to launch apps. I'd die without those two things.

I worked as a contractor for Netscape at the end of the 90's. I'll always have a soft spot for them.

Not to be a crusty old man or anything, but I see this more and more in tech journalism. Which makes sense, I'm getting older and the journalists are younger. Tech is a "young " scene. but there is no collective memory. Anything that existed before the writer was old enough to be aware of it simply doesn't exist. I've read articles about how Facebook messenger was "the first instant messenger" as if we didn't have IRC, ICQ, or AIM back in the day (and older ones I'm sure). Or how TikTok is successful because it's the first platform ever to bring short form video to the masses (completely forgetting Vine). Or even here, on Lemmy, about how the fediverse is something new - the first time there is decentralized discussing (ignoring USENET for example). On one hand it's maddening that people don't do their homework or have knowledge, but at the same time I recognize that I am completely guilt of being blind to tech before my time as well.

I enjoy collecting cassette tapes and VHS classics. I work in big tech all day and I like the retro stuff in my downtime. Found some video tapes thrifting this last weekend and the gen-z cashier asked me what they were and were surprised there were movies on these. So I get it.

The 2012MBP is a fine machine. I actually just retired one. Being an intel model, you can run any Linux. You don’t need to stick to Ashashi (that’s for Apple silicon chips).

You could also put Windows on there.

Really though, if she likes the Apple ecosystem, go find a 2017/2018 MPB 4 thunderbolt port model. I recently picked one up on fb marketplace with an i7, 16 gigs of ram, and 256gb ssd for $350.
