If I have a die with 4 sides that say "obey the law" and 2 sides that say "break the law", then it is no shield to say "breaking the law wasn't my intent, it was just 'possible'"
If you make a neural net or any other system that has a potential to output criminal actions, then when it outputs criminal actions, then you are at fault.
Now, if you are able to successfully contain / filter out those criminal action attempts before they impact others (aka before they become criminal), then sure, no prosecution for you, you're just developing something dangerous.
That is not the case when things are not contained.
Really I would make the lawyers prove in court that they can't be held for intent as well. Because at us very least this is some kind of criminal negligence, or reckless disregard or some such. Though training the net to do hacking and then claiming innocence when it does hacking doesn't pass the sniff test.

I hate that living in the USA right now has forced me to weigh being authentic about myself IRL versus looking out for my safety.

References a Colbert appearance, quoting and linking:
Talarico often says he learned from his Baptist preacher grandfather that Christians “follow a barefoot rabbi who gave us two commandments: Love God and love neighbor—because there is no love of God without love of neighbor.” That’s a reference to Matthew 22:36-40, one of Talarico’s go-to, and definitely non-“fake,” scripture passages. And as Talarico told Stephen Colbert, it has radical implications: We are to love our neighbor “regardless of race or gender or sexual orientation or immigration status or religious affiliation.”
Another of Talarico’s go-to Gospel passages, Matthew 25:35-40, directly links love for Jesus with care for the hungry, the stranger, and the imprisoned. For many evangelicals, this passage refers mainly to a future end-times Tribulation. For Talarico, by contrast, it is manifestly current and intensely political. Here’s how he deploys it in the Colbert appearance:
“For 50 years, the religious right … convinced a lot of our fellow Christians that the most important issues were abortion and gay marriage … two issues that Jesus never talked about. Jesus in Matthew 25 tells us exactly how you and I and every one of our fellow believers [are] going to be judged and how we’re going to be saved: by feeding the hungry, by healing the sick, by welcoming the stranger.”
Throughout trade talks Trump has regularly insisted that his business savvy is laid out in his book The Art Of The Deal, which he did not actually write because it was ghost written by journalist Tony Schwartz who has since denounced the president.
Thank you Beaverton, I knew I could trust your journalism past the headline
Looks like the photo series didn't survive federation to lemmy, but that link should work
Oof, this is the saddest comic I've seen in months.
Very very good.
Nah, sadly (?) that's not how it works. People's desires come first, and then they find a way within their belief system to justify their actions.
The people I'm hurting aren't human.
They're bad people.
They would do the same to me.
I'm only doing it because I'm a bad person.
I was hurt, so now is my chance.
That's just how the world works.
Et cetera. Sometimes if the conflict between their beliefs and their actions gets too great they change their beliefs.
But for the most part, people don't want to kill, steal, rape, etc. So they make up a reason to not do it, like "God will punish me if I do that" or "It's morally wrong" or whatever, and then they don't do it and move on with their lives.
(And those who do that stuff come from literally all belief systems; the only real differences being social environment - acceptability, expectations, protection from consequences, etc)
"Executions" are not what one country does to the residents of another country.
All I know is that Republican-aligned groups spent a ridiculous amount of money to get him out of the race.
If he was a bad candidate, they would have had to do that.

Thank you for the post
Yes, this. @ 👆
It almost always will be a false start, unless you've been in contact with some other sourdough starter recently.
Just be patient, it takes time for the starters environment to get to the place where it's hostile to non-sourdough microorganisms, and friendly and full of happy sourdough critters.
The "undesirable" bacteria are actually fine at the start, their lifecycle just pushes the starter in the direction you want it to go (more acidic, probably other complex environmental changes)
I don't like violence, may I salt the tester instead?
Or skip the search engine:
"Tell me about the ecology of Namibia. Use only sources from before 2022 because I do not trust LLM generated output. Make no mistakes."
We even trained it on thousands of examples of how to walk through a doorway! How could it have done this?!
It would be fine if they asserted their right to get eaten by zombies. The problem is that they decide they have the right to let a zombie loose in middle of the haven.
Elon has clearly stated that he hates Wikipedia and wants to destroy it.
And here is one of the ways he's working on that.
Yesssss I love Her Story - that "curiosity as game mechanic" was really well done, and I wish there were more games in the 'genre'.
I did play the later game "Immortality" which is a bit similar in gameplay - you can click on something in one scene to find other scenes with the same character / object in them. I enjoyed that, though it didn't have the same exploration-narrative magic of Her Story. I definitely found it harder to get engaged with at first.
It must be really difficult to craft a story that reveals itself well in that clip/connection format. It's not a simple linear narrative, and avoiding sequence breaks (where you get a clip that reveals things you shouldn't yet know) is so important. Though I think Her Story handles that well by keeping clips short enough that you don't have the context with just a single clip.
Oof, haven't thought about them in years and now I want more.
I should take another look at Telling Lies. When it came out there were a lot of complaints about what you said, it drops you into the middle of a scene and I think you had to slowly rewind to the start of the clip? I read later that (?) they added a feature to skip back to the start with a single button press (or maybe that was a steam mod?). Anyways, I never ended up playing it.
I was watching the other game: "#wargames" for a while but it stopped being sold and vanished from the internet.
