Ear plugs =/= can’t hear. Loops specifically are designed to allow you to hear but not have hearing damage.

My baby is colicky AF and will scream while we’re in the process of making her a bottle. Or while we’re burping her. Or when we have to pull the bottle away to wipe spit up. Or while we’re in the process of soothing her but not soothed yet.

I’m pretty patient (with children, not judgy parents though) but I’m not perfect. I can parent better and be more present while not massively overwhelmed by a noise designed by evolution to be horrible and intolerable.

Regarding doomers: Big agree in general. My understanding of a "doomer" is someone who thinks all hope is lost and there's no use doing anything. That extreme pessimism doesn't add anything tbh, especially in a hope-oriented instance.

Regarding civil disobedience, I also strongly agree.

Re: absolutist veganism... while I agree it can be as much of a hindrance to discussion as doomerism, I'm not sure we should have something codified specifically about vegans. The thing is, anyone can be so fervently for ANYTHING that they're not able to have an open-minded discussion assuming good faith. Heck, that includes the "I don't eat greens I'm not a rabbit" folks. I think it'd be a better step to have a rule against... I don't know what to call it, dogmatic arguments? Absolutism, ad hominem attacks, etc, the stuff we see with a lot of online Veganism but that certainly isn't only vegans. For sure we could use the example of veganism, but also of religion vs. atheism (not as relevant here, but I feel prone to the same behaviour, at least from my experience in online Atheism), maybe it could even tie in with the doomerism rule.

Either way, I want to echo what others have said and say this is already a lovely, inspiring community, and I'd love to see that wonderful community codified in some way.

grow something. Doesn't have to be via digging in the dirt (though that helps), even a houseplant or hydroponics setup or a jar of herbs on a windowsill can remind you that you're a part of the planet, not just a guest. And I think that mindset shift that comes with caring for greenery is of utmost importance.

This also scales: You can start out with a gardening kit or hydroponics kit, then you can maybe grow some herbs from seed on a windowsill, then one day you're hoisting up a grow light over some tomatoes in your bedroom and all the sudden you're growing food to feed yourself and your community. All very solarpunk in increasing intensity.

...the "growlight in the bedroom for tomato plants" might just have been a me thing though. (It didn't work so well)

We’re not talking about hair colour though, this is obviously reducing a pic of some friends to “haha big booba small booba”. That’s kind of textbook objectification.

While I don’t feel like this shills IKEA that badly, i wanna thank you for giving me the term “fast fashion of furniture” because I had yet to find a way to explain why I fucking hate IKEA furniture

(Caveat that fast fashion/furniture is a complex, awful issue when we’re paid in pennies and still required to have clothes and also like sleeping in beds. But I fucking hate when it’s unnecessary)

I can see the concern, as a trans and nonbinary person, about the phrasing of the headline. Casual readers will totally think the actual guidance says “if you fuck up a person’s pronouns, you go to jail” or whatever.

But not the guidance itself. We need more protections against intentional, malicious misgendering as verbal harassment. Which is usually less “she said— oops, they said—“ and more stuff like “(female coworker) put has pronouns in her signature? I thought she was a REAL WOMAN”

(The second being a real example from a friends work place. Funny thing is, friend is stealth trans and the coworker being misgendered is cis, but i digress)

But yeah all that aside I think the real context is misgendering when someone needs the bathroom, e.g. “you’re in the wrong bathroom” type comments. Where we really need stronger protections.

Moving to a city with a tool library. For an annual £20 fee I can borrow any of a myriad of power tools. Currently using an orbital sander for some DIY, previously borrowed a hedge trimmer for the garden, it’s freaking great.

Yep this. I’ve been given the advice to step away from my baby when she’s crying if I’m overwhelmed and she’s in a safe place. That’s advice from basically every medical professional I’ve encountered during pregnancy and post partum. Because it is so, so important to not let your nerves get fried in an attempt to be a perfect parent, because letting your nerves get fried will lead to shit you’ll regret down the line. Be that shouting or checking out mentally or way worse stuff.

Not the OP so can't say why they're doing it, but in the UK at least it's really common practice for people who grow gardens because we'll frequently have "hosepipe bans" which means we can't hook our hoses up to the mains to water our gardens. So, you either have stored rainwater (like OP is doing) or... a very dry crispy garden.

I don't know how much it saves money wise, but ecologically using water from rain instead of the mains offsets the amount of water that needs to come out of treatment plants. After all, plants don't care about water treatment really. So they don't need the fancy drinkable tap water. They can have rainwater and that means more for the humans.

If your freshly born newborn doesn’t poop because she’s constipated, well they work surprisingly like toothpaste tubes if you hold their knees to their chest.

I’m sorry for the image. I’ve earned my “grit your teeth and do what you gotta” merit badge at just a week and a half postpartum, so I’m… happy?

I'd never heard the term manarchism but god yeah this resonates. I have some immediate reactions, as much as I want to sit with this material longer before commenting. All I can think of is all the cis dude activists I've seen who just seem to be there to be angry. Like it's an outlet, like it's one of those rooms where you pay to go in with a sledgehammer and break junk. The anonyminity is just the fee they pay to rage.

I don't necessarily want anonyminity. I want connection and humanity. Anonyminity is for safety in a world that criminalises change and protest. Maybe I'm clinging to random threads of thought in that article, but I feel like cis men have a lot less to lose when they shed their identities. They didn't have to fight for them. On one hand, I've had to assert my identity as a trans person to a world that thinks I don't exist. On the other, if I DO go anonymously, then some cis dude is gonna take credit for my actions. Do I need credit? No, but neither does he.

Anyways, long ramble over, this made me think a lot and I appreciate it.

I have a few conditions that affect my spoon usage, like autism/ADHD and mild chronic fatigue. But I’m also pregnant, which means every day I put N+1 spoons into the “avoid nausea” drawer, and there’s a steadily increasing multiplier on any activity that means I have to walk places. Lately being vertical too long costs a bit o spoon.

All this to say that yesterday my husband sent me this comic and I immediately replied “that’s me”.

(A good percentage of his messages to me consist of Foxes in Love comics, and they are ALWAYS incredibly accurate)

Gently, I think. I like to focus on what we can do together, not on what they shouldn't do. It's a bit of a mind game, but phrasing things in terms of possibilities and community goes farther than discussing remedial actions-- what people need to stop doing before we face horrible consequences.

Granted once you've got them on board, we can discuss the harder subjects that might require we make less fun changes to our lifestyles.

I plan to indoctrinate introduce people in my neighbourhood to solarpunk and grassroots activism by sharing produce from my garden, as an example. Once I have a good rapport with them, it'll be a lot easier to convince them to make changes. It's a lot easier to listen to the nice person who gave you a basket of broccoli than it is the person who slashed the tires of your gas-guzzling car. Beyond that, I think just being an example of how solarpunk communities can work is convincing enough.

(Note: I don't necessarily have an issue with more in-your-face protests like slashing tires, but I do think they serve a different purpose than getting people into a community)

I absolutely love this! I have a passionate loathing for furniture that's made to break instead of last, and I think it's pretty radical to take things made from typically "cheaper" materials like MDF and still repair them.

I'm currently typing this from atop a desk that has some nasty peeling veneers on top of particleboard, maybe this will inspire me to fix it!

I was recently at a conference for AWS (Amazon Web Services, AKA the cloud provider for a HUGE chunk of the internet), and part of the keynote claimed that it was greener to run in the cloud because... uh... well, they didn't exactly say. Don't get me wrong, I could see how it would be easier to make all AWS data centers compliant with using green energy than it would be to convince every random financial institution that their on-premises servers need to be green, but quite frankly it's Amazon and I don't trust that they're telling the truth about themselves and not just greenwashing.

Quite frankly, for things like lemmy instances, I think we could totally achieve a totally solar powered setup easily... but not easily at scale or reliably.

I've thought about how cool it would be to have a server room linked up with a solar array and batteries, and basically only have the servers up when there's enough energy to power them. In theory, it sounds fun to have a static splash page that shows when the servers are down that explains why they're down, as a way to make people think about how energy-expensive servers are. In practice, it sounds like a nightmare for a ton of reasons to have an intentionally flaky server. But it sounds like this is already a Thing with Low-tech magazine, which is neat!

But that's not to say we couldn't build and self-host a reliable and sustainable server room. Just that I don't know the numbers on what a server room actually pulls energy wise and how much energy generation we'd need.

It's tricky. I'm bipolar, and I need my medication to thrive, so we'll need ways to compound those kinds of medications that aren't at odds with solarpunk. What that looks like, I don't know. I'd need more knowledge on how aripiprazole is created and a definition of "solarpunk" enough to combine them...

But also, I used to have severe issues with social anxiety. I still have the underlying anxiety predisposition, but improving my surroundings and the people around me helped with the anxiety.

I think a more solarpunk society will benefit the general mental health of a lot of people, but there are still going to be mental illnesses that need medical intervention.

But I think it's also important to note that Solarpunk isn't handed down from any governing body. There's no strict dictation of what is and isn't solarpunk and what does and doesn't fit. We have general consensus, but it comes from the ground up, and it comes from what we talk about and how we talk about it. In short: If you want to discuss how mental health will be handled in a solarpunk society, the ball is in your court. It's up to mentally ill folks and our advocates to determine our futures here.

Final caveat: I think there are some people in the solarpunk community who overlap with the... "natural is better" community. The "anti-chemical" community, or the "the only antidepressant you need is trees" community. That's a problem we as individuals should definitely address. But again, how? Up to you and us.

UK based Senior software engineer here (by title anyways, I have a little over 3 years experience iirc so I’m more a mid stage-wise). I kinda use indeed, mostly use linkedin and recruiters though. My last two jobs, a recruiter just reached out to me with companies I’d never heard of or looked for. But I got on their radars by applying to postings on linkedin.
