You absolutely can run Fediverse software yourself. That's how the internet was created and we have you claw it back from big Tech.
First you should figure out what you want to run. For a few folks and basic microblogging, GoToSocial is super easy to set up, but it's limited.
Bonfire is an amazing fediverse app and it's getting better everyday. They're trying to make it a platform for communities and it's very extensible.
Emissary is also amazing platform for fediverse stuff and then there's HTML and CSS editor to really build what you want from there. Like bonfire, but you have to really create the site you want.
If you want reddit style, I like piefed over Lemmy.
Forums with fediverse? Nodebb.
Pictures only? Pixelfed
Live streams? Owncast
Hosting videos? Peertube
And it all interconnects. So you could run Bonfire, and follow someone on Peertube and comment and like from Bonfire.
It's overwhelming. Id suggest write down what you're wanting and then look at each project and see what fits.
I run my own bonfire at btfree.social and a public peertube at tubefree.org.
Happy to help however I can. I've done some install videos and going to do more soon.
Literally was in a presentation at work the other day where they said someone used 2 million tokens and the next person used 1 million and they were so excited by it.
I didn't get it. I asked went 2 million was better than 1 million. The VP basically said it's not, just costs us more money.
So why the hell is the presentation acting like it's a fucking victory?
And he'll still be a billionaire. And he got that money by suppressing the world with proprietary software. He's single handedly helped hold humanity back. I don't care the good he's done as it's built on the back of all the harm he's done.
I'm SUPER excited, but also VERY concerned. So I'll be cautiously optimistic. But seeing the new Naked Gun with Liam Neeson, though a completely unrelated project, I'm hopeful that today's Hollywood might actually be able to pull this off.
Digital sovereignty. Codeberg is funding development of forgejo. Forgejo will federate to other instances. So you can have your own repo and someone on another forgejo can interact remotely. So no need for centralized platforms anymore. Power of the Fediverse! :-)
Dude literally said it:
Lemmy.world is run by Ruud, a man that lives in the Netherlands. He does not have the same legal protections as say Reddit. He has to obey his laws in his country. Looking up Netherlands laws, it would seem to me that having any user named "Murder all " is literally against the law in the Netherlands. So he has two choices. Literally risk going to prison, or having to take it down.
The brilliance of the Fediverse, as you realize because you've posted this on Piefed, anyone can create a server and build their own connections.
I'm against hurting anyone, but I'm in the US, where people have that right to say those things. Ruud isn't.
These servers have specific rules for their communities for a reason. Most aren't here to make money. No one is paying Ruud to keep people in power. He doesn't even have to run ANY service, but he is. Because he believes in the Fediverse. But he's still bound by his laws and it's his server.
I've spoken to Ruud on an episode. He's a lovely man that doesn't deserve this hate.
I understand the frustration. Lemmy.world is a large instance where there are tons of people, but you don't know the laws.
I'm not denying the censorship at all. I'm not denying that we need to speak out for Palestinians. But he HAS to follow his country's laws or there will be no services. And when you say ggod that's what you want, the more servers shut down, the more people will turn away. The more people are forced back to big tech where they will censor you to protect their investment. Reddit IS protected by that speech under section 230, but they'll still censor it.
The best you can do, start your own instance. It's possible it might be blocked by Lemmy.world if your server is breaking their rules. But at least you can get your message out.
I recommend Peertube. There's not much there yet, but myself and others are trying.
Also, did you know you can upload your video to Peertube and have YouTube pull it via RSS? That's what I'm doing!
All of my stuff you'll find on Peertube and I don't have to do anything else to get it up on YouTube.
Honestly, I look at this and I see a future where everyone runs their own Federated services. I can verify my child's age as well as mine and I'm the best one to decide what they can and can't see. So I only need to worry about me and my family.
Or a local community can run it for themselves.
A forced move away from social media, because they can't afford the risk, to one where we all run our own stuff and can follow who we want.
This is only 1 possible outcome of course, and it's wildly idealist, but it's a future I'm going to push for no matter what. So I'm very biased, so don't take my opinion into account. :D
Cory is amazing. I interviewed him on Fireside Fedi and that dude has so many well thought out points. He changed my mind on Threads coming into the Fediverse.
Link for anyone interested. https://video.firesidefedi.live/...
Kimmel also didn't say anything about Charlie Kirk either. But that didn't stop you asshats from crusading. His comments were purely direct at Trump being a massive POS when asked about Kirk. So glad we're all on the same page that he didn't say sorry, nor did he need to.
Techlore has their own Peertube BTW.
This video is on there. You can follow a peertube channel directly from Mastodon or Piefed.
If folks want a peertube account there are many services out there. I personally run tubefree.org for those interested.
Framasoft are incredible folks. I just did an interview with Booteille yesterday!
Folks can watch the interview here:
