FOSS can pay the rent. But the users that will complain about £20 for a lifetime of ad removal, definitely aren't going to be the ones that help him should the bank come calling about late mortgage payments.
Sure thing. With this current proposal, when you visit a website, the site asks your browser if you're willing to display it as intended, basically with all and any adverts. If the answer is no, then you can't see the content, if the answer is yes, then you're likely using Chrome or a Chromium based browser and Google can guarantee more ad impressions, because they're first and foremost an advert selling company.
For those of you that don't want to install another add-on, this filter for uBlock does a similar thing: https://filterlists.com/...
He's also a producer in all his films. He definitely has the clout and oversight to ensure its done. But he's also a luddite and so it's not natural for his brain to consider things like that. Remember, this is a guy that doesn't even have a mobile phone.
It's a news organisation, so it's okay. We definitely want more journalists and news organisations in the Fediverse. I'd much rather have them directly on mastodon than the million different bird.tld mirrors.
Mastodon is your personal soapbox where you can shout your thoughts.
However before you have followers, you're kinda shouting into the void.
However hashtags are like little campfires and if you go to one. You'll see people. If you share your thoughts around the campfire, people will see you.
Now once you've met people (and followed them), you can see them from atop your soapbox, no need to stand around the fire. Though in some cases, you won't know what they said before you became friends.
The more campfires you find (and follow) along with people, the busier your home feed is and the more interesting and/or fun your experience will be.
