Agreed. By the same definition fb has been dying for almost a decade, but I'm still forced to use the messenger app since all my friends are on there.

Some malicious users do use VPNs to send spams and many websites automatically bans these IPs. Normally switching to a different VPN server will resolve the issue.
This is actually what I wanted to say to a lot of people. During peace times, allowing a foreign adversary stealing your data is a lot less damaging to your personal freedoms than your own government stealing your data. We need to be wary every time when our own government tries to tries to introduces surveillance laws under the disguise of "national security".
ahhh yes, just remove myself from my social circle, why didn't I think of that?
Informative tech content. I'm right leaning but more towards the center so I don't agree with everything he says politically speaking, but I have no issues viewing his content since at the end of the day he's still libertarian and anti-establishment. I also have no problems holding conversations with the anarcho socialists on lemmy, because at the end of the day they're also not advocating for more control over my life, we just have disagreements on the technical details of how society should work.
The problem I see here stems from the fact that the parliament is supposed to represent all Canadians. Honouring a former member of the SS is inconsiderate to those who have suffered from Nazism as well as their descendants here in Canada. Maybe it's appropriate to honour him in Ukraine as someone who contributed to Ukrainian independence because many there sees Nazism as a lesser evil than Soviet oppression. However I don't think that's good enough of a reason for it to be considered appropriate here in Canada.
My mom is tech illiterate and I buy all her devices for her. If I gave her a Mac she'll just use it without knowing what OS it is.
I don't think using sarcasm as means to express disagreement, and provide examples so that the other party could better understand your viewpoint should be seen as escalating conflict. The other gentleman's statement although is something I disagree with, but still well with the boundaries of civil discussion, so I'm not seeing a need to report anything.
Donated $20 to GrapheneOS when I first installed it. $5/mo to Signal. Local charities in my hometown.
I spoof my user agent on Linux and appears as a Windows user to websites. So I'm actually contributing to the Windows stat.
That's only true if the engineers following the order clearly know what they're doing is wrong, which is often not the case. Most software engineers are as ignorant about privacy as their customers. They do not give a damn about FOSS nor privacy and are often users of these products themselves.
If you're not using the wifi functionality perhaps putting the device in a Faraday cage would prevent anyone from accessing it.
Another main reason why I took off my hat back then was because I was a broke college kid with garbage internet speed and my only computer was a laptop. Torrenting shows sometimes means I need to have my laptop on for days. Now I have an entire homelab setup with a dedicated VM on one of my servers for torrenting and I can afford fast internet. I was pleasantly surprised how efficiently I can torrent when I got back sailing recently.
+1 for graphene
I love it when it still allows me to use some google apps (e.g. Gboard) but I can completely neuter its tracking capabilities by removing network permission
Well, in real life I probably do appear to be an autistic security nut to some. I don't blame people from thinking this way because I came from that place too. You just don't realize how important infosec is until you do.
I did actually manage to quit FB the website for the past two years and it was largely inconsequential, but if I quit Messenger right now I'd probably loose a good chunk of my contacts. I'm not ready to take that step yet.
"Strong opinions loosely held"
Implying you should have the courage to fight for what you believe is right but not hold onto them once you're proven wrong.
I learned this as a company culture thing from one of my previous employers and not sure if there's another source for it. I did not like that employer very much in the end but this quote has been stuck with me since and I live by it.
As a Canadian I approve this message
I made the first step a couple years ago which was quitting FB the website, but I still have one foot in the swamp that is messenger. I'm still working on getting my parents onto signal, so far haven't succeeded yet. Some people can quit cold turkey like what you did, but others like me take time.
"Coercion involves compelling a party to act in an involuntary manner by the use of threats, including threats to use force against that party."
Perhaps you should kindly explain why you think threats are involved in this case?
