I think federated networks are healthier and better in the long run. Also there should be more smaller instances so the load is not too heavy to bear for any one instance.

I use homeassistant with frigate. detection, alerts and recording, it supports it all and the mobile client is useful to monitor it remotely.

I've been using a self hosted matrix server for the apst year, no complaints so far and since a lot of technical rooms already exist on other matrix servers, interoperability is a big plus. Also element mobile app is pretty decent but there are plenty of other alternative apps too.

vaultwarden syncs your passwords locally so even if your server is down the passwords remain available on your device. And it is a wonderful password manager, you can share passwords with your family, have TOTPs, passkeys.

I've been using mailcow for about a year and i am very satisfied, it checks all your boxes and is easy to configure and deploy over docker.

Public services: my social network(hubzilla), Email(mailcow), Matrix chat, Peertube.

Private: my media (jellyfin, audiobookshelf, calibre, homeassistant.

I enjoy the freedom that comes with this and its like having your own home on the internet. I have a very modest setup but its enough to host my friends and family so nothing fancy like k8s. Just a refurbished optiplex running docker :)

If not a Pi, try to go for those (used)mini PCs, they will allow you a bit more power than a Pi and cost just about the same. Then get docker on it and you're all set for easy deployments.

And look up homelab youtubers, they have some good tutorials for beginners. thats where i started. Jim's garage would be my recommendation, especially his older videos about hardware, security and networking basics. You will need to learn these to keep things secure.

I read somewhere that the copilot key is a macro for "Left Shift + Windows key + F23" . See if shortcuts with this binding work

@eleitl old reddit was a healthy place. I joined reddit about a decade ago back when it used to be a palce to find communities ran by people passionate about it. then slowly as the enshittification began the passionate herd left. I hope the fediverse would become a goto social hub for people in future. This place has good fundamentals.
