I understand and respect where you are coming from but i prefer not to rewrite history while arguing about ideas.
It pretty much is. I guess that this puts them in the 50$ per hour considering ordering, building and shipping. Considering they give you the instructions to diy it sounds pretty fair. They know they wont sell thousands of copies so they don't have bulk pricing on components. How much do you charge per hour for your work?
Ten years after critical mass protests in my city we have a lot (and I mean a lot) more pavements and bike roads (between pedestrian pavements and streets). I manage to get to my work in approximately the same time as with bus along with hundreds of fellow bikers.
It's also his legitimate choice to wait. He can't see the best way forward and is deciding to wait on his decission or let the community decide instead of him. As much as we like to think of him as autocrat in some way, he respects people that work on kernel and he respects their time. The smartest move is often to wait on a decision. And even if it's not a smartest move in this case, it can still be better than making a wrong decission that will demoralize the community even more.
