I've been working and managing remotely for 10 years. In fact, I wrote a book about it. Working remotely is not for everyone, but the pandemic showed that many more people in the world can work remotely than currently do, preferably as a part of self-sufficient communities.

I dream that the future of government is to help individuals transition to small, sustainable communities. It's difficult for people to purposefully say goodbye to some luxuries that exist, but it's the only way we can survive on this planet.

When I moved to Europe, I left all my friends behind. It was incredibly difficult to make new friends. Now, I've got a weekly boardgame night where folks drop in. It's the most important part of my week.

So do your best to find like minded individuals (in real life!) and do it together. Together we go far.

I've recently read The Ministry of the Future. It's a good book that I would consider climate fiction. It's set in near present day and follows a transition to a solar based society. This is interwoven with chapters consisting of hard climate science. Definitely worth a read if you are interested in learning more about our forthcoming transition but I think it falls short as a traditional fiction read.

This is unfortunate. Here's the most important paragraph for those that didn't click through:

The draft plan also calls for shipping emissions to be slashed by at least 20% but aiming for 30% by 2030 and at least 70% but working toward 80% by 2040 despite a push from Pacific nations for more ambitious targets. Experts calculate the industry must cut its emissions by 45% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050 to keep on track with 1.5 C temperature goal.

This completely makes sense. People should reject assignments if they are unethical! It's almost like the young generation is doing the right thing. The horror!

Sorry for the English.

Greetings from Solarpunk (slrpnk.net)! I've recently re-read this book as part of Solarpunk Book Club (unrelated to slrpnk.net). You can check out our discord here: https://discord.gg/qtnaEGNFQ

I truly believe this is a Solarpunk book even though it's "in the shit." For me, the prose is especially poetic. The themes of the book describe resilience and, even though there are dark moments and melancholy, over the span of 60ish years there is hope. There is hope that we as humans can survive, that we can learn lessons from the abuses of the 20th century, that we can work together to still create moments of serenity and beauty even when the world is raging against us.

And hope is the definitive trait of Solarpunk, but one that is coupled with the pragmatism found in Rebecca Campbell's excellent novel. I hope the others reading along give it a chance.

We just planted peppers this year. We ordered a couple batches of seeds online and so far things are growing. The Vampire peppers are doing the best. Good luck with this
