I bought my house in 2014, $224k at 4% APR, my monthly payment including taxes is $1400/mo.

It's only been 11 years, inflation is up ~35% in that time, so buying the same house now should be ~$1900/mo. Actual price if I were to buy it now? ~$3500/mo. And wages have barely budged. No wonder young people entering the workforce can't buy houses anymore.

If they can charge 30% less without Apple's fees, then why are their prices the same whether you buy on their iOS app or direct on their website? Why have they been overcharging users who don't buy through the iOS app by 30% all this time?

Civil Asset Forfeiture. It's legal in most states, but some are better than others. Oklahoma is dog shit:

Seriously people, don't move to Oklahoma, or really most southern states.

I mean, you're not wrong, but the same applies to all phone manufacturers. Samsung, Pixel, etc. are going to see similar price hikes due to tariffs in the US, and a similar drop in demand in China as the population there moves to Chinese manufacturers. I'm not sure why you're singling out Apple.

And? Who’s going to do anything about it? The stupidest people in this country gave a con man unilateral power to do anything he wants, what did they expect?

I abandoned Google when they started throwing shopping links at the top of every search, even when searching for things that have no relevance to shopping, and they started artificially promoting scams and paid material above actual results.

Google Search was best around 10-15 years ago when their only focus was providing the best results they could (remember when you could actually click the top result and you would be taken to the most applicable page instead of some unrelated ad or scam?). Now their focus is on providing the best product possible for their actual customers (paid advertisers) even when it means trashing their own product in the process.

While true, and I have a lot of DRM-free music that I’ve bought from Apple, the difference is that getting music purchased from Apple onto your computer in a usable format is a bit of a pain, and it’s all lossy. Music from Qobuz can be downloaded directly from their site after purchasing, in lossless FLAC format, and many of their albums are available in high-res 24-bit and/or 96 kHz format as well.

Nah, turns out you don't actually have to change it at all. If nobody is willing to enforce the rules laid out in the Constitution, then it's just a worthless scrap of paper that means nothing. He can just do whatever he wants now, nothing matters.

Near the peak of the NFT craze I was gifted (as part of an initial mint) an NFT, which I turned around and immediately sold for $3k. Last I looked it was worth about $200. That's the extent of my experience with NFTs.

Yeah that's about 2 and a half round-trips between Dallas and Houston, that's...not a lot to be calling this thing ready to go and pulling out the safety drivers.

I wonder how these handle accidents, traffic stops, bad lane markings from road construction, mechanical failure, bad weather (heavy rain making it difficult/impossible to see lane markings), etc.

You'd think they would be keeping the safety drivers in place for at least 6+ months of regular long-haul drives and upwards of 100k miles to cover all bases.

The complaint isn’t about the colon in OP’s image, it’s the colon in OP’s explanation.

OP complaining about an insignificant capitalization mistake in a Twitter post, while making a far more egregious grammatical error in their explanation is just...*chef's kiss*

Elon is really unpopular right now and “regular” republicans feel like he and DOGE are attacking them.

Only those who have been personally harmed. The rest of them, and that's the vast majority, actually believe Elon is cleaning up the government and finding/eliminating corruption. I work with one, he's convinced everything DOGE has found and cut is corruption/fraud, the kids who are rooting through the Treasury are geniuses capable of finding things that no other administration has been able to (or been willing to?) find, and ultimately the Government is going to run more efficiently and taxes can be lower for regular people when it's all said and done. They're too deep in the rabbit hole to see the light.

To be fair, I don't know either. I mean he's supposed to, and he swore an oath to, but if nobody is going to enforce that then must he really? What happens if/when he doesn't?

Don’t look at Backblaze drive reports then. WD is pretty much all good, Seagate has some good models that are comparable to WD, but they have some absolutely unforgivable ones as well.

Not every Seagate drive is bad, but nearly every chronically unreliable drive in their reports is a Seagate.

Personally, I’ve managed hundreds of drives in the last couple of decades. I won’t touch Seagate anymore due to their inconsistent reliability from model to model (and when it’s bad, it’s bad).

Yes it’s paid, but the quality is worlds above Bing, DDG, or Google. The best description I can make is that it’s what Google Search was about 15 years ago, back when there were no AI results, no ads, no artificially promoted results, and you could vote on results and block domains from appearing in your searches. Back when Google Search was actually good.

So it doesn’t do anything new or groundbreaking, it’s just what a search engine is supposed to be, in a time when every other option has abandoned that goal in the endless search for more revenue.

Same, I don't let Docker manage volumes for anything. If I need it to be persistent I bind mount it to a subdirectory of the container itself. It makes backups so much easier as well since you can just stop all containers, backup everything in ~/docker or wherever you put all of your compose files and volumes, and then restart them all.

It also means you can go hog wild with docker system prune -af --volumes and there's no risk of losing any of your data.

This is their attempt to get around that pesky 1st amendment. Make criticism of the king a "mental disorder", and then you can lock them up involuntarily "for their own protection".

I've always wondered - and figured here is a good a place to ask as anywhere else - what's the advantage of object storage vs just keeping your data on a normal filesystem?

I had something almost identical to this happen to me on Friday. Last year our company moved to a super locked down version of Teams, to the point where I couldn't even open images that people put in the chat because of security issues, instead the image they posted would be replaced with an error image saying that I wasn't allowed to open images, blah blah blah. That problem was resolved a long time ago though.

On Friday I was trying to send an image of some data processing to a colleague, and every time I put it in Teams, it would show up as that stupid error message. I spent a solid hour trying to figure out why that problem was back, was my computer not authenticating with MS properly, etc. Turns out my file browser was sorting by time order instead of reverse time order, and the screenshot at the top of the list from May 2 2024, was a screenshot of the error message that I used to send to IT when they were investigating the problem.
