It's chilling looking at the animations in the article. The left turn one shows how a pedestrian can be killed in even what should be a pretty low-speed collision. This is exactly what happened about a year ago to a cyclist at a busy intersection where I live, and I had always wondered how such an accident could prove so deadly?

Yeah same. I am so confused by this whole Crimea business. Russia took over in 2014. Did they offer really generous incentives for people to move in? Or was it more stick than carrot?

I seem to recall Ukraine retaliating by cutting off the water supply to the peninsula, which makes me think it would've been pretty shitty to stick around, let alone move in? And then when the current war got under way, Russia made it a priority to reestablish the water supply. But then they (the Russians) blew up the dam that controlled it?!? Like none of this makes any sense to me.

That sounds like a great snack for when you're pulling an all-nighter or having a long gaming session! And it seems reasonably healthy too, since it's not deep-fried like samosas often are.

I thought if there was a silver lining to AI's resource hogging, maybe it was that it would steal resources away from the abomination that is crypto currencies? So much for my optimism…

$6 million would be his annual subscription with tons of vendor lock-in. He could maybe save a bit if he agreed to ads on the bionic eye?

My wife was supposed to get hers for Mother's Day. Now she's hoping Christmas? But even that's iffy at this point.

Being part Japanese, soybeans are a significant part of my diet. But looking into this a bit, it seems most of the surge in production from places like Brazil is going towards animal feed (particularly for poultry and pork). Bottom line is animal protein is expensive and environmentally impactful. Best go for the bowl of miso over the yakitori I guess?

My brother started eating salads with bamboo chopsticks because it bothered him that a vinaigrette dressing brings out the metallic flavour in a fork. Then he realized they are much more practical for the reasons you mention and has become a huge advocate. They have become my preferred implement as well.

I used to be into aquariums, and now I'm wondering how big a plecostomus could grow if released into a tank of that size?

Others questioned whether the technology will remain effective. X user Peter Austin (@PeterAusti61402) claimed he had bypassed the challenge using a virtual camera and AI-generated animations.

Damn, I've been reluctant so far to make sloppy AI animations like so many people are, but I may be forced to do so now to protect my privacy?

One last point he makes is the personal savings rate soared during lockdowns, as key costs like childcare and commuting vanished. “When the world reopened, the costs returned, but now inflated by 20%. The rage we feel today is the hangover from that brief moment where the American Option was momentarily back in the money,” he says.

So people were actually better off during the pandemic. smh

Researcher commenting on the patch:

he remarks that the software only checks the validity of the downloaded file using the ancient CRC32 hash that isn't considered cryptographically secure anymore

I have to respect the researcher for his incredibly charitable wording here. CRC32 is not even remotely crypto. That's never been its purpose, and using it for digital signing is patently insane!

I fear I would have had a much shorter temper after what he's been through, and yet here he is keeping his cool and his criticism constructive. Good on him.

For instance, if an AI model could complete a one-hour task with 50% success, it only had a 25% chance of successfully completing a two-hour task. This indicates that for 99% reliability, task duration must be reduced by a factor of 70.

This is interesting. I have noticed this myself. Generally, when an LLM boosts productivity, it shoots back a solution very quickly, and after a quick sanity check, I can accept it and move on. When it has trouble, that's something of a red flag. You might get there eventually by probing it more and more, but there is good reason for pessimism if it's taking too long.

In the worst case scenario where you ask it a coding problem for which there is no solution—it's just not possible to do what you're asking—it may nevertheless engage you indefinitely until you eventually realize it's running you around in circles. I've wasted a whole afternoon with that nonsense.

Anyway, I worry that companies are no longer hiring junior devs. Today's juniors are tomorrow's elites and there is going to be a talent gap in a decade that LLMs—in their current state at least—seem unlikely to fill.

Nearly 50,000 residents of Lake Tahoe, a popular tourist destination in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, have been told their utility company will stop providing them with electricity in 2027. The utility, NV Energy, will instead use that power for data centers in northern Nevada, one of the fastest growing data center corridors in the nation and where Google, Microsoft and Apple have all either built or planned facilities, Fortune reported. Residents have until next May to find a new electric provider.

Wow, that's rather appalling. Ars has a longer write-up about it.
