I’ll have to check it out. I just got finished working through all of Murdoch Mysteries. Took a while.

Trek is known for allegory, but routinely abandons it for time travel stories. Star Trek IV and Deep Space Nine’s “Past Tense” and “Far Beyond the Stars” all examples that tackle societal issues very directly, and they’re all highly thought of.

To be clear, I think Picard features possibly the worst writing in modern Trek, so I’m not setting out to defend it on all fronts. But the idea that addressing societal issues head on isn’t a valid approach for Star Trek doesn’t add up for me.

I dropped all US streamers, and switched to CBC Gem and Brit Box. Plus the high seas, of course.

WWDITS is much more of a laugh out load sitcom. It’s like a modern The Addams Family or The Munsters - horror themed, but too much of a lampoon to retain any actual scares.

Widow’s Bay I’d call a proper horror-comedy. There’s comedy coming from the character’s reactions, but the horror they’re reacting to is mostly played straight. The characters and the audience are both meant to be at least a little scared by it. I recommend checking it out, but it’s a very different feel.

I’d recommend watching other shows by the WWDITS team, first, if you haven’t. Wellington Paranormal, Our Flag Means Death, and Fight of the Concords. Only the first one is particularly spook flavoured, but they’re all solid comedies.

This one’s better if you use your third eye.

Took a few episodes for this one to grab me. I felt like the comedy really undercut the horror, and wasn’t funny enough to justify that. But around the third or fourth episode they seemed to get the balance right. Either that, or I got to caring about the characters enough that it mattered less. Either way, I was won over by the midpoint, so definitely recommend.

Kirk never turned evil! He just got into an ego-driven power struggle with his old ship's captain, almost derailing a vital mission to save Earth. Then he authorised the creation of a doomsday weapon, which he left unguarded and undefended. Then he tried to fix that mistake by rushing over with a training ship full of cadets, only to get attacked by another old mistake he never kept tabs on. Then he stole that same ship...

Oh, shit, you're right.

Part of it is definitely that I found Patricia much more interesting than Loftis, and she didn’t get much focus until episode 4. I wouldn’t say it ever gets as scary as you get from, say, a Mike Flanagan series. The humour is always a component, but it detracts a lot less from the horror atmosphere as things progress.

We didn’t need either. The 1960s animated version was lovely.

In Picard season 3, Data forgot literally everything a little bit at a time. But Lore remembers it for him.

3 is great fun. Of all the odd numbered films, it’s the one I least understand the disdain for.

Eh, it’s just his character arc from TWoK restated. Both Data and Picard have better character bits in Generations.

We could do it for a lot of captains. Picard and Pike would be the only two that are noble enough it might be less convincing.

It’s clear that Riker was able to go on some kind of extended sabbatical while retaining his command, I’m not sure why he chose not to do that?

Picard retired as a protest. A protest sabbatical just wouldn't hit the same.

TFF feels more like an extended episode of TOS than any other movie. Maybe that's not the best sales pitch for a feature film, but I love it.

I've been hoping for them to bring Sybok into the mix like they teased in season 2. Imagine if they did both at once, and we got a full dysfunctional family reunion?

Discovery implied that Sybok was out of the picture before Michael came onto the scene, meaning they might even be secrets from each other! Would it be too much for both each sibling to echo fan kvetching that Spock wasn't more forthcoming about the other?
