No for one simple reason: I have a wife. We like to experience content together (watching movies/TV, playing games). None of which I can do without not one but two of these things. No thanks.

Gacha games completely turn me off. I just hate random loot boxes or other gimmicks to get you to spend money for the chance at getting something neat.

Hot and active are currently broken and will show stale content. It's a Lemmy thing not a Jerboa thing. I'm hoping they fix this in the upcoming version that's in testing right now.

"Relax, you're just making pasta."

I used to be a person with massive anxiety for perfectionism. I never wanted to make a mistake, no matter how small. Thanks mom!

I went with my now-wife to Italy several years ago and we did a cooking class. I was learning to make pasta and trying to make the egg well as perfectly round as possible, and the chef teaching us told me that. Weirdly it struck me as super obvious, and it helped me frame my anxiety in a better light. It helped me figure out my anxiety wasn't realistic, and eventually lead to therapy and medications to help.

Now, I use this phrase at work all the time to remind my teams of software engineers at work that it's alright if something isn't working. We don't work with medical systems or nuclear plants. Bugs won't cause the end of the world, so it's not worth panicking over. We're just making pasta.

Not in its current form. Anyone who's tried to start a tech company knows you have to make your solution simple to use. Making software easy to use is actually surprisingly hard, involving experts in user interfaces, a lot of thought on user onboarding and training.

Lemmy as it currently stands is relatively new-user hostile for non-technical users. Content discovery isn't very clear, people are confused about how to find communities to follow, and the mobile apps are barebones.

That's not to say it can't get there, but until you never need to mention that the system is federated, I think a lot of people will be turned off from the complexity of using Lemmy. The community right now is motivated to use Lemmy and I would imagine a little more on the technical side, but getting your parents to use Lemmy or Mastadon would be a challenge currently.

I could see a good use case for having at least a centralized, cross instance search where the instances will send up community information to the service and then the service shares it out with everyone. Rather than make a new community on my instance I could find the active community and federate it.

Then again the same thing happens on Reddit for popular topics. Like when a new game is announced there might be 5 people trying to start the subreddit for it.

That game HAS to be played with headphones or a super good surround sound. The directionality of the voices in Senua's head is next level.

Yeah my #1 issue is how hard it is to find communities to follow. I think it's why so many communities are just started on lemmy.ml since it has the best chance to get users on there or Beehaw.

You primarily need Docker, specifically (unless you want to set it all up by hand) Docker Compose. All installation options for Lemmy utilize Docker to host the components (db, API, UI, etc.). Depending if you go the Ansible or Docker/manual route you will need Nginx as well.

You will need disk space to store content (including pictures). The CPU/RAM needs are super low unless you have a lot of people on your instance.

You will need a domain for federation to work (like my instance is at lemmy.wizjenkins.com).

Lastly you will need an SSL certificate but Lemmy can generate this for you assuming you have your domain pointed to your server before you start everything up.

I'm not familiar with QNAP but generally NAS servers don't support Docker Compose so you might be better off with a raspberry pi or VM or something.

HIya! I jump around a lot but today I started playing Warhammer 40K Space Marine again in preparation for the release of the sequel. Before that I'm working through Daemon x Machina to scratch the Armored Core itch I have waiting for AC6.

Software engineer here. Historically we started not hard-deleting anything because sometimes software does bad things and we never want to accidentally delete anything that could be important since then the only way to undo it is to restore the database from a backup. So it's better/safer to literally not allow the application to ever delete anything from the database.

That being said, I could see an option in ActivityPub to delete comments, but with the distributed nature of Lemmy you would have to trust every server you federate with to listed to the protocol and delete the comments too since they are stored on the other servers as well.

I'm not saying we shouldn't be able to hard delete comments, I'm just explaining why the Lemmy developers might not have started with hard-deleting comments. I agree with you we should have the option and it should propagate regardless of any instance settings.

My point in mentioning other servers not deleting your comments is that ActivityPub is an open standard. Technically someone can write a Lemmy competitor that federates with your instance and does not implement the hard deletion of comments. It's allowable under the protocol. That doesn't mean the feature isn't worth implementing, it just means there are caveats to "this comment disappears off the Internet forever" like we'd like.

Since I just started my Lemmy instance and it was a major pain, I'll probably work on some better setup documentation and scripting.

The purpose of life is whatever you make it. Some people feel their purpose is to make as much money as they can, others to create art that will last for all time.

There is no one purpose to life. There's no cosmic point to it all, so we all just find out purpose.

For me, my purpose is to find happiness. I suffer from depression so that's my one goal. I find making people laugh makes me happy, so now I do a podcast where I make people laugh most of the time.

I'm huge into Pathfinder, both because I have a podcast playing it and because they have amazing pre-written adventures. Those are great for me since I don't have any time to homebrew.

Jerboa also doesn't do push notifications like the desktop does. So for moderation or messaging it's not super useful since I don't know if I have new applications or messages I should respond to.

That might be a limitation of Lemmy or the app (I'm not sure if it supports push notifications at all)

I would love to have tags added that I could search at across instances. So looking up #animalpics might be all the communities that post pictures of animals

Then add to that the ability to follow that tag like you can on Mastadon and that would solve some of the "Super Community" asks.

I just finished my setup and I had to do A LOT of tweaking to get it to all stand up and talk it everything correctly. The documentation (and even the Ansible script) is not up to date sadly.

Feel free to message me and I can share my configs with you. They worked on a dedicated VM.

Yes NPM is for basic reverse proxying, so one URL to one server. If you wanted to scale and load balance across multiple servers you'd need regular nginx with a text config file since you literally can't configure a second or third server.

And I'd still find that easier than Traefik, but maybe that's just because I've been using Apache2 and nginx for like a decade at this point so it's what I know.
