I really wanted to openly show my support for my comrades here
Based. Welcome, comrade o7
Beware of the tankies though, they're literally everywhere

wait there's tankies here?? wtf what kind of instance did I join
Ikr. I just came here as an innocent resistance fighter because I was told this was a place I could support Hillary Clinton and suddenly the whole place is filled with weird spoon memes
Oh my. I would certainly hate to encounter such people.
What are tankies, again?
I thought they were people who wanted to send tanks to Ukraine?
Wait, then who are the dronies?
Did you come from here?
No. I've been lurking on and off since /r/GenZedong was quarantined. There were a lot of links to Lemmygrad back then. In the Reddit kerfuffle this week, I looked closer at actually joining Lemmy. I was initially going to create my account on lemmy.world or lemmy.ml, but the anti-communist nonsense from blahaj-zone convinced me to throw off the mask and sign up here instead.
Yoooo, I just joined lemmy.ml a couple of days ago as part of the reddit exodus. I expect to be spending a ton of time here though, you all seem rad. I don't adhere to a particular political ideology beyond leftist simply because I don't feel knowledgeable enough in any flavor of communism or anarchism to brandish the label. I haven't read any theory but have tried to do some independent research on Cuba and North Korea specifically. I feel like I've done just enough to kill my brain worms and recognize that they aren't these evil superpowers that American propaganda paints them to be. Also Michael Parenti is daddy.
Definitely will be here lurking and learning and expanding my understanding of Marxism. And shitposts of course lol. Stoked to be here!
I don’t feel knowledgeable enough in any flavor of communism or anarchism to brandish the label
We're all still learning, comrade. It took me a long while to call myself a Marxist. There's a tipping point where you can't go back and have to embrace what you've become haha.
Thank you! I've only dabbled a bit but he is an absolutely phenomenal orator. I read Against Empire when I was a bit younger and want to read it again (my memory is awful). More recently watched this amazing lecture. Sounds like Blackshirts & Reds would be a good read and I would love any recommendations.
The first time I'd ever heard Parenti was through this punk band Choking Victim (yes punk played part in my radicalization). The intro to the song is an excerpt of him. Though I didn't understand the context, this song really stuck with me for years so it was cool to discover his work a bit later in life
I don’t feel knowledgeable enough in any flavor of communism or anarchism to brandish the label
Well you'll be happy to know you've already started reverse-engineering Mao
For real though, welcome, I'm new here myself from the hexagonal bear site and while it's a nice active place, we don't get the same amount of newcomers over there that this place does, and seeing so many new comrades warms my heart.
Ahoy hoy! I'm one of the Redd-fugees, pretty active in r/LateStageCapitalism up until recently, and I hope to get to know some more like-minded people up in this place (as the kids say these days).
I'm also that type of middle aged person that gets more chill about everything as I pile up the years. Well, apart from how much I hate this ever intensifying capitalistic hellscape we find ourselves in.
I use the same username here as I did on Reddit, we'll see if that's a smart move or not. I like the look of things, especially after I found the dark setting for the UI and I can definitely see myself hang out with all you nice people even if, or when, Reddit change their tone. Yeah, as if...
Welcome comrade! I also don't anticipate reddit making any changes to reverse their capitalist trajectory so my plan is to enjoy the sharing of thoughts, opinions, and information here. I wish you the best!
The atmosphere is so much better here than on Reddit. I'm sure you'll enjoy it if you like chill. I could never really participate on Reddit because there were just too many trolls but very few trolls make it here and those who do leave or get booted quick.
Did you come from here?
No, I just searched for a Reddit alternative (quite literally) and looked at the alternatives. I liked the familiarity and the general feel I got from this community and it felt like I could fit in rather well here.
Former redditor ready to finally burn that bridge. Sick of the libs always finding excuses to justify making deals with fascists or saying "we should do X" when it's obvious the machine will never allow their fantasy reforms. I'm a fan of dissecting rhetoric and propaganda, with an interest in mental wellness, comparative religion, and consciously examining how we make meaning.
I do my best to live a life without illusions while not becoming disillusioned and try to focus on bringing change over the long term.
No, maybe SocialistRA?
I'm a longtime Reddit lurker, and joined lemmegrad last week. I'm just happy to see there's an actual commie space online and to be able to participate in it!
Was it this post that notified you first?
Nope, I was just lucky enough to find it when looking at a list of available instances to join.
Unlike other Lemmy instances, we allow users to create communities here
huh, I assumed this was the case for most instances
This post isn't for you, it's for new users, please unread it ASAP.
fuck beehaw
all my homies hate beehaw
well while their actual content is alright so long as it's not political, it's an instance full of libs who are very defederation-happy, so i wouldn't advise on joining them.
you'll get to see less posts overall due to them defederating the biggest instances and the few posts you will see will have the same kind of lib takes as you could expect from the average reddit thread
sup! we heard about lemmy when we first joined mastodon 3 years ago but just now exploring it. weve barely used our reddit account when we had one but this instance seemed pretty cool so we decided to check this out :::)
Still cross-posting this thread on Reddit; I will stop soon though:
For me, it was particularly important to be able to create a filter list of subreddits that should not be shown to me. I was able to filter out all the US-related stuff in particular. I do not live there.
I don't know if the official app can do that. Even if it does, I don't feel like patching it so I don't have to see ads.
The only Android clients I don't really like are the ones I found on F-Droid.
I'm just not that familiar with it yet. I had commented on something once, it was there and then gone after a while without me knowing why.
I made a thread that I think helped boost the amount of new users coming through.
hello.
what is hexbear and why dont they federate with anything?
also, what are the bad lemmy instances i should be wary of?
hi friend! I'm from hexbear and I hang out here as of recently. I'll give you the brief.
Hexbear was once another Lemmy instance just like all the others. At some point a while back, we decided we wanted some other features that lemmy didn't support, like custom emoji and pronoun flair. So we forked lemmy and did our own thing. We kinda started to regret it because lemmy started making performance improvements that we wanted, so our lovely development team is in the process of implementing the hexbear-unique features in mainline lemmy and migrating us back to mainline lemmy. We're actually set to migrate to mainline lemmy on the 17th without federation yet, and we're set to turn on federation, starting with lemmygrad, some undefined but soon date after that when we work out all the migration bugs.
looking forward to shitposting with you comrade 🫡
oh, also, some more notes:
hexbear is l a r g e by fediverse standards (600 users online at time of writing)
now with twitter burning, i bet that will become closer to the standard, like what happened with mastodon
17th
aka "tomorrow" hahahahaha
Hexbear, originally known as chapo dot chat, was created three (?) years ago by members of /r/chapotraphouse after the subreddit got banned. Its software was based off of lemmy, but so many changes were made that they no longer worked together. Now, they finally added all the features they contributed to lemmy, so hexbear will become a lemmy instance in a few days. The admins said they will only be federating with lemmygrad for the moment. It's basically been its own forum for a couple years now so federation with the rest of the instances would chance the vibe a lot.
sh.itjust.works, sopuli.xyz, feddit.de, beehaw.org, lemmy.one, lemmy.ca, and midwest.social, and probably some other moderately sized instances all have lemmygrad blocked, so their users won't see any of your replies. There is now an nsfw lemmy instance so if you don't want to see porn, make sure to block that. I forget the exact name and I don't want to look it up, sorry. The 196 blahaj zone community is anticommunist and maybe also anti-anarchist?? so I'd recommend just blocking that cause you'll get banned immediately anyway.
beehaw.org
that one is defederating everyone, from what i saw
Not lemmy.ml. Yet. 😈
They don't like others.
Some say it's because they don't like leftists, but they also defederated lemmy.world, a generic instance
I saw a couple instances in the past week that I blocked, so I don't think so.
Yes but very limited in what it federates with.
Nope.
I did decided my instance after it, though, but i was already looking for one.
Hello! I was never that active on Reddit, but it's good to find a federated alternative, anyways. I try to make socialist infographics in my spare time.
Saw this posted on r/socialism, so I came. Happy to be here. Will mostly be lurking. Heavy RevLeftRadio Red_Menace listener. Can't quite quit Reddit because I need my doses of tradespeople talking about plumbing, home maintenance, and permaculture.
@muad_dibber@lemmygrad.ml @muad_dibber@lemmygrad.com
There are people that need your help in the comments of Reddit in this thread here:
Please help out. I tagged your old account several times. Just letting you know.
We've gone through all account requests, they should try to login with their account and see if they've been approved or rejected.
lemmygrad. com was a fake copycat website btw, taken down thankfully.
Yeah sorry, I meant in the ping, you pinged the fake muad dibber from the com website
As someone who just went through the application process (though not via reddit) and didn't realize it had been approved until I saw this message, it might be nice to have a confirmation email go out. Then again, maybe one did and it's just in my spam or something.
Also, hi! I'm Shane. I have a generally ML perspective and I'm very excited to discover this community exists. Looking forward to getting to know everyone and having some informative discussions.
Is this the thread that first notified you about Lemmygrad?
Hi! I came here because I was curious about Lemmy after Hexbear swapped back over to it.
So far I’m just concerned that I’m too much of an anti-secular softie to fit here, I get the impression a lot of people here came from genzdong and other subreddits during the recent Dark Ages when self described “anarchists” started calling anyone who wanted anything more extreme than liberal policies a “tankie”, so they’re understandably pretty disillusioned with anarchists in general.
I have actually, in real life, kissed an anarchist on the mouth.
I mean, if you’d rather I alienate people because of their glorified consumer choice political identity, I can
where can i get help about using Lemmy?
for example, how can i ping someone? how can i ping another community?
writing @user@instan.ce doesnt work. the same with instan.ce/u/user, instan.ce/@user, !community@instan.ce, @community@instan.ce, instan.ce/c/community
is there any way to do it, to begin with?
Tagging: type @ then start typing the user name or display name. Tagging you for example -> @CompadredeOgum@lemmygrad.ml
Linking community: type ! then start typing the community name. Eg. !lemmy_support@lemmy.ml
This feature hasn't been fleshed out yet so searching is a bit slow. It needs to be worked in.
so it becomes a full fledged markdown link.
i noticed it doesnt ping, though. i was marked once and never got notified.
searching is a bit slow
yeah, i guess i wasnt waiting long enough
@tea_pot_tinhas@kbin.social voce foi pingado?
Hey comrades, ML from Australia here, although big appreciation for MLM too. I saw the link to Lemmygrad back when GenZedong was quarantined, checked it out, and then forgot about it. I found this again checking out what was blocked on other instances, so thanks libs I guess? Looking forward to my local feed being actually good, and I will hopefully end up posting more than on Reddit.
Was going to start a new comment thread so say hi, but why not here, this is pretty much my story (except I'm European). It gives me good vibes to see that GenZhou survives here. It was a great place for reading news/opinions.
Hey, I'm new here, but not entirely new to theory and discussion of these things (highly recommend George Jackson's Blood In my Eye). Hope I can learn some things and contribute too. May have developed a slight tendency to overgeneralize differing material conditions from engaging with people online who are not used to this stuff and trying to condense it, and am willing to listen if I come across as missing the historical context of something at any point. I try not to say too much about stuff beyond the US, as it's what I'm most familiar with the conditions of, but I do try to venture beyond if it seems appropriate and something I've done some investigation on.
Hi there! I made my account back in December but forgot about it until tonight. I have been trying to decrease my dependence on another corporate social media platform so I’ve been trying out alternatives and this is one that I saw a link for somewhere (either reddit or telegram) and decided I wanted to try.
I am a M-L, I am doing some organizing locally, I have a dog and a cat, I love memes (and sometimes make them too), and like another comrade in here, I am also one of those middle-aged people who keeps getting more chill and laid back as I get older (but also more angry with the conditions imposed on us by late stage capitalism/bourgeoisie).
I look forward to learning my way around and getting to know everyone, y’all seem very cool.
Hey there! Never heard of Lemmy before all that Reddit situation, which is a sad occasion because I like it here! I'm a left-winger since mid-teen ages, first got bought by the Venus project (see, it's not useless!), and then figured out it's basically communism served for red scare victims and went into Marxism from there (and never looked back). Despite being a fairly orthodox Marxist, I'm also a young and somewhat soyboy left-winger, wishing to make the world a better place for everyone (for that reason I'm also a young and aspiring scientist). Hope to find meaningful conversations, useful theory and deep analysis of world's events here.
P.S. I also come from an actual Leningrad (Saint Petersburg, that is), which I guess makes me the ultimate Lemmygrad user :D
hello! I'm not much of a redditor but lemmy looks promising; I've been on the fediverse for a bit so I'm used to the multiple federated servers format.
Anyhow, outside of my politics, I'm mostly about gardening, caring for our three dogs, and reading up on sciences. I live in Texas, and have to deal with the shitty politics of that place in my offline life, but online I like reading political theory and research.
thanks for using Leebra!
go to feed...
Thanks for having me! This is my first time being openly communist online. I'm a long time lurker, and I love the vibe here. In light of the recent radlib uprising though, I really wanted to openly show my support for my comrades here.
