I tried for !linux@lemmy.ml but it didn't work. What should I do?

As @KoreanPerson said, you can try removing the exclamation. Otherwise, from what I've gathered on other servers, sometimes it's because servers haven't been federated between each other yet so you do the search and then wait a bit for the server to pick up and federate the other server. It should then come up in a search.

Personally I've found it a hit and miss on how much time you have to wait. Sometimes it's appeared clicking search a second time and others it's been days and still not appeared.

Also bear in mind that some servers are blocked by others so they'll never appear in the search and you can't access it regardless of the method used to 'discover' a community.

How does the lemmyverse link get its numbers? When I go to any of those instances the subscriber numbers are vastly off. For instance, /c/selfhosted on lemmy.world is listed as having 5.1k subscribers there, 6.8k if I go there directly, and 300 if I navigate to it via kbin.social/m/selfhosted@lemmy.world.

Also the Hot feed on kbin.social for that community is 100% different from the Hot feed if I go there on lemmy.world... it's very confusing.

I believe that the numbers that show on kbin are the number of kbin users that are subscribed vs on lemmyverse, its the number of subscribers on that (home) instance.

And lemmyverse is behind the real number because it syncs every x minutes.

I don't believe there's a native way to do this unfortunately. Currently you can only search for other communities (magazines) specific to your kbin instance. As @ChrV noted there are ways to do this via 3rd party

However, once you find a community from another compatible instance you can search for it through kbin.social and subscribe to it. Like searching for "mildlyinfuriating@lemmy.world" without quotes in the search bar will let you subscribe to the mildlyinfuriating community on lemmy.word and the content will show up under kbin.social/sub

I don't think this is unintentional. Kbin is a separate thing than Lemmy which is what most other instances are using. It makes sense that magazines would be prioritized over communities in terms of discoverability.

That is useful and thank you, but I'm still curious about a way within kbin.social - feels like there should be. @ernest

okay so here's my understanding: browse.feddit.de/ will not show you all communities on the fediverse.

feddit.de is a website built on the software called "lemmy". there are several websites that all connect to the fediverse (sh.itjust.works, kbin.social, mastodon.social, etc) running different software (lemmy, kbin, mastodon, etc). browse.feddit.de/ will only show you communities from websites that run the lemmy software

kbin is a different software from lemmy, which is different from some other software that connects to the fediverse. So far to my knowledge, there is no universal search for communities across the fediverse.

I'm not sure why, it might be due to the fact that kbin is new and search providers like at browse.feddit.de/ and https://lemmyverse.net/ haven't added kbin instances to the search function? Maybe they don't want to search for kbin instances?

Yes that works fine for me but what I mean is I would search "photography" and only relevant magazines from kbin would be listed, not anything from Lemmy instances.

But others have answered my question in the comments here so thank you all.

I've been using https://lemmyverse.net/ though it takes a couple steps to get subscribed. You'll have to copy the link type thing under the Magazine's name, paste it into kbin's search, and delete the exclamation point at the beginning, then search.

I've noticed Lemmyverse.net does not include kbin communities in its search and only shows communities on lemmy instances. is there a search service that can see all communities across the fediverse agnostic to the platform?

It has gaps in communities, and is not completely federated for all instances, but if you click on the Magazines button at the top (desktop view) or click on this link:

https://kbin.social/magazines

Then you can search from there. You will see other instances come up in the search result. It feels cludgy, not because of kbin, but I think mostly how federation between other instances goes. But I suspect that will improve with time.

If this is the way that the fediverse is supposed to work then it does matter which instance you make your account in, which is exactly the opposite of what was advertised about the fediverse. because there may be a niche community which I can't find through the kbin search but that exists on some lemmy or any other software instance on the fediverse.

Why isn't the searching for communities easier? Even on more established lemmy instances like beehaw they don't show communities from non-lemmy instances. Is there some major roadblock or just that nobody has developed a comprehensive search function yet?

I'm still learning this myself. So only speaking from limited experience.

But from what I understand, in the case of Lemmy, KBin, Mastodon, and a few others, they all use the ActivityPub network protocol and that is what essentially connects them all together.

I am only speculating, but I expect that there is some improvements needed in that protocol along with some standardization between dissimilar platforms to facilitate better visibility between those dissimilar platforms.

On the flip side, even Lemmy to Lemmy instances have issues showing communities from other lemmy instances. Which, leads me to suspect a problem either in configuration of the instances, or in the underlying protocol (ActivityPub).

Edit: from the kbinmeta magazine, here's more details on plans for the search feature here.
