It hasn’t helped Walk’s popularity that he’s seen as transgressive in other ways – he’s an atheist in a deeply religious area and he despises Donald Trump, who won West Virginia by a thumping margin in the 2020 election, to the extent he turned up to a rally of the former president with a “Fuck Trump” sign, prompting a volley of threats.

I like this guy.

There are better alternatives to doing any damage as a loner. Be part of a mass movement, so that when the "crime" is done, pretty much everyone is backed by lawyers, as they should. Also any mass movement has easy access to explosives, exactly because of how many people are in it.

Blowing up a fossil fuel industry is hardly a crime when they already destroy our environment and our lives for the pleasure of a few.

In terms of minor crimes, which can be fought against, there are organizations like Extinction Rebellion, Last Generation, Just Stop Oil, Blockade Australia and so forth. They did shut down oil refineries, coal terminals and so forth successfully. Last Generation is accused by the German police to have planned an attack on an oil pipeline, my guess there is some other stuff going on in similar groups as well. There are other historic groups, which went further, but if those are around, they obviously do not have websites.

I agree in general. But I thought coal was used to produce solar panels, no? IIRC, I saw a documentary showing how coal and chrystal are baked together in the production of solar panels.

I’ve also heard coal can be used in fuel cells as another alternative to burning it.

In any case, I’m with Junior Walk on this because he’s documenting violations. The coal should be mined legally for solar panels.

If coal was used mostly for that, there wouldn't be any protests.

But it is overwhelmingly burnt in power plants to generate electricity, which is a major cause of climate change.

So IIUC, you’re saying ban coal (as opposed to controlling the allocation of coal towards clean uses); thus cutting off the supply needed for solar panels and some fuel cells. Then what? We can only have wind turbines?

Don't burn coal to generate electricity. It causes too much emissions and we have other means to generate electricity.

In extension, don't mine coal in order to burn it for electricity.

Other use cases of coal like medical use are not meant. They're also much smaller in scale.

His iconoclastic campaign against coal has, he said, resulted in his car brakes being cut and even him being shot at.

At one point, as we drove through one slate-grey mining site, Walk saw some company employees ahead and did a swift U-turn, while offering advice on how to shelter behind a car wheel during a gunfight as we retreated. He previously used a four-wheel ATV to conduct the drone work and has sped away from security guards he feared could kill him and dump his body in one of the holding pits containing syrupy mining slurry.

I have no end for the amount of my respect for him.

What he is doing is not illegal. He just makes coal more expensive, by helping enforce enviromental legislation, by documenting violations with his drone. Given the current economic enviroment, in which coal is more expensive then natural gas and much more expensive the renewables, that is a good strategy.

This might appall some people, but someday I’m going to gain access to a drone, and subsequently the insurance premiums on various Amazon and Walmart properties would be about to experience a drastic rate hike…
