Damn, I knew OW2 was kinda bad but it went down hill and into the sewers. Also very sad but realistic timeline.

what kind of German class are you in that does exams about blizzard? was it just a small class discussion, please elaborate.
We had the topic of creating a comment and a blog. The main topic for it was "Gaming" to make it more interesting for pupils. Its at a vocational school. Our teacher just picked the Blizzard topic and we learned multiple weeks how to do this with blizzard and then had an Exam on this. Its interesting that woman were molested there and we also compared this with german IT workplaces where Woman are pretty much happy at IT workplaces but there also is not much of them. We want more woman at IT places and also learned how IT was actually more of a Female job because carying for Kids and Homeoffice was a perfect combination.
Not to mention selling the sequel on the promise of Co-op then cancelling that feature long after launch and killing the 1st game so players couldn't simply continue to play the game they purchased already.
Dude, that's fucked up. What the heck...can you host your own servers like...I dunno, CounterStrike? Or is it dead-dead?
The replaced it altogether. It's no more
This is good for Linux users. Valve has been fantastic for supporting games on Linux since the Steam Deck and Blizz has never had proper Linux support. Now Linux users can ditch Lutris, Bottles, or WINE if they want to just simplify and use Steam, which does have a native Linux build.
Does OW2's anticheat support Linux?
Always has. Overwatch has been a great game for Linux and I played it regularly up until OW2 came out and shit all over the franchise with its stupid battle pass and F2P.
Now I only play occasionally as it's still a fun experience with the right people, but I don't play solo anymore. The progression is completely ruined since it's locked behind BP. I used to buy the limited time skins every once in a while to support what I believed to be a very fair monetization system, but they're not getting a cent for OW2 from me. Complete trash.
I actually did like most of the gameplay changes they did for ow2. They managed to save a lot of stuff they managed to fuck up in ow1. Ow1 was good a few years ago, but got worse from patch to patch. Their monetizing system sucks obviously. I think they had a massive problem with declining player rates (because they fucked up the gameplay) and making it F2P was their way of gaining a bigger player base. But now they have to monetize everything to acctually make money from their players. So gameplay got better, everything else got way worse.
Yes, just battle.net that made things complicated
Valve has been amazing for linux long before the Steam Deck. They have been putting in a huge amount of work and support for Linux when they launched the ill fated Steam Machines. Back when MS was looking to force 3rd party stores out of the Windows ecosystem.
I see what you're saying, but Steam Machines came out in 2015 and was more a push for native Linux support. IMO, Proton was the paradigm shift where native support immediately started mattering less and that came out in 2018
For most games it's not viable to stay exclusive away from steam forever. I feel like most alternative platforms are going this way with temporary exclusivity because it's still more profitable than being on steam from release.
A few months with a 100% revenue share with less sales down to 30% will always beat 30% forever, especially when that 2nd launch brings a massive wave of sales because Steam also likes to market bringing big releases to it's platform
Sometimes it does work great. I imagine Apex Legends would be dying or dead of it hadn't moved to Steam. The increased playerbase was a huge boon to the game
Ah well in that case, it'd certainly be dead if it hadn't moved
Actually they replaced it with "EA App" last year. I'm pissed because the replacement for Origin doesn't open The Sims 3 properly when using Create a World, so it thinks I'm just launching the game normally and doesn't go in the correct mode to edit my world.
Well, right now you know, a billion flies can't be wrong...

They make shit games with shit practices because people keep playing and paying for them.
Yeah well I'm willing to guess that a good chunk of those players moved from battle.net to steam for convenience.
And even so, Overwatch 2 has barely half the active players that tf2 does, as I'm writing this, and tf2 is how old?
Overwatch 2 went down the drain and now we have some rough numbers to give us an idea of the situation.
ik theyre unpopular for their f2p model but it's funny seeing the complaints when it's already in the top 100 most active games on steam, and will likely remain there. Ngl I think they (blizzard) anticipated this response but knew it'd make them a bunch of money anyway

There is something entertaining reading bad reviews, specially when it comes from shitty companies.
Launch on Steam
This is one of the reasons why I don't really want to buy the new Diablo game even though my friends are playing it and it sounds like it's gotten good reviews. checks metacritic, critics score 86, user score currently at 2.0 Yeah figures lol
set in an optimistic future
Can anyone here up to date on their Overwatch lore explain what that means? I’m not being snarky about the game being bad, I just haven’t played it and genuinely curious what they mean by that. From my understanding, the game is about killing each other lol
In summary: (spoilers ahead)
AI created -> AI becomes monk, this is good AI -> bad AI also created, controlled by single mastermind AI -> bad AI kill humans -> Overwatch created -> good AI sacrifices herself to free other AI from bad AI mind control, thus becoming AI Jesus -> AI now have free will. Some become good, some stay bad. -> optimistic because AI Jesus saved humanity from being killed and now Overwatch is winning the war against bad AI
That's about it.
From my understanding, the game is about killing each other lol
Yea, this will always be the problem when trying to create a story around this format of gameplay. You definitely have to ignore the fact that lore enemies can team up because the comp needs it.
The optimistic tone comes across in the character writing, world design, and music. Little in the game is dour or depressing. Instead the focus is on the details that make the locations or characters unique and interesting. There's a lot of language and cultural representation.
Also, barring the secondary deathmatch game made, OW is technically about doing non-kill objectives, it just so happens that killing your opponents is the best way to complete the objectives.
It's funny because on the scoreboard, traditional "Kills" are labelled "Eliminations", but they still keep tradition for multikills i.e. the announcer will say double kill and not something double elim
Seems about right.
Thing is, I actually like OW2's core gameplay more than OW1. I can't say it's necessarily better than OW1 would have been if they hadn't abandoned it for years to (fail to) build OW2's PVE, but so it goes.
But I reinstalled just to see if I'd want to try with the new Invasion content, and here's the thing:
I played about 5 rounds of QP. They were all horribly mismatched in terms of skill level, and I enjoyed 0 of them. So the idea of grinding through a new battle pass, although liking the RoboAna mythic skin, was a nonstarter even before talking about how crowded a launch season this is. Like even if I wanted to, I don't have time for this battle pass.
And then the new PvE content? I mean maybe it's good, but nothing about any of the PvE they've released in the past would support that. It's been consistently mediocre IMO, so I dunno why I'd suddenly want to pay for the privilege.
I'm annoyed that I have about 2000 coins I'm never going to use (love that I can't use them to buy the invasion bundle just to screw around with the new stuff), but I think it's time to give up and move on.
The PVE bundle for a few missions costing about the same of what I paid for the entire ow1 is just insulting. For what I understand they'll release multiples PVE bundles for 15$. The entire ow2 is only a money grab machine.
I should be mad at the market for this practice but I'm already so pissed off that I'll direct all my hatred towards a single stupidity: Fuck all mobile consumers who made this kinda of shit the norm in the gaming market, fuck all candy crush players who gave infinite money to Activision Blizzard.
As an OW1 enjoyer (yes it had alot of flaws too) and around 300~ hrs in OW1, OW2 was not nearly as fun, even all the way up to them shutting down OW1
-matchmaking sucks, you either rolled or get rolled no inbetween (i felt ow1 had better games overall) -Tanks, which i main became such a chore, or just completely rolled due to skill differences -Healers became too easy to pick off/couldnt do much to protect themselfs And controversial opinion: -The change from 6v6 to 5v5 was one of the worst changes for me, it made it rely on individual performance way too much... one pick and your teams fucked, with a 6v5 i felt that you had somewhat of a chance of not being rolled as bad, or at least not being completely wiped and regrouping
It sucks seeing one of my fave games feom that peroid go down the shitter; at least TF2 has my back as always
matchmaking sucks, you either rolled or get rolled no inbetween (i felt ow1 had better games overall)
I think matchmaking is only a little worse, but it feels a lot worse because OW2 is simultaneously more transparent and less transparent in the worst ways.
I think steamrolls happen at the same rate in either game, but in OW2 the detailed scoreboard makes it much more apparent when a steamroll is happening, since you can compare stats across both teams. OW1 just had personal stats, the vague medal system, and no enemy stats, so the only way to tell you were getting rolled is if you lost multiple team fights in a row.
On the other hand, not being able to see anyone's rank makes it much easier to blame losses on matchmaking. Also, the MMR system was a little fucky on launch with new players being placed higher than they should.
Tanks, which i main became such a chore, or just completely rolled due to skill differences
Yeah, tanking has less depth to it, since there's only one. Tanks basically have two choices - stand in the front and try to be a meat shield while your team gets a pick, or dive the backline and hopefully secure a pick before the rest of your team falls over. Either way, there's a lot of pressure on the tank to do the right thing, and a lot of pressure on the team to keep the tank alive.
Healers became too easy to pick off/couldnt do much to protect themselfs
I strongly disagree with this (except if we're talking about Lifeweaver). All of the supports have enough tools to at least escape a 1v1 situation against most DPS characters, if not win it. They all either have movement, CC/knockback abilities, raw damage output, or usually some combination (or all) of those. Being able to regen health out of combat also makes supports less reliant on health packs or self heals, which helps survivability as well.
The change from 6v6 to 5v5 was one of the worst changes for me, it made it rely on individual performance way too much... one pick and your teams fucked
I've noticed the opposite, that is actually easier to turn a 4v5 or even a 3v5 with a single well used ult, where in the original you'd have to use at least two ults to burn through two tanks' HP.
IDK, at the end of the day I enjoy both games gameplay wise, but they are very different experiences, so I understand why people have preferences towards one or the other.
I'm just thankful it's come to steam and easier to launch on steam deck/Linux
The game has currently over 70000 players online (source: Steam Charts)
I know its not THAT big of a number for such a well known brand, but its still a big number. When will Blizzard fans learn that review bombing ain't gonna do anything if they still play the game and pay for their stuff? We've been doing that for years now...
Most bots target the game's "Casual" mode, since it's the easiest way to hassle the largest group of people. If you play that mode, you will encounter bots. It sucks that you have to curate your own experience, but you can almost entirely avoid the problem by choosing your own community servers to play on instead.
IMHO: I'd argue that community servers are a "purer" TF2 experience in the first place. So many core game features only make sense in a pro-social "hangout" environment. I'll rattle off a few from the top of my head:
Casual rips almost all of that out in favor of emphasizing the gameplay skeleton which remains. You're no longer showing up to a permanent place with people you can get to know and be silly with. When the round timer ends, Valve may as well be blowing up the server and nervegassing the other 23 players for all it affects you. I posit that TF2's Casual mode isn't merely a "non-competitive mode" -- it's an "anti-social mode". Playing TF2's Casual mode is like... showing up to the amusement park, alone, except all of the restaurants and bathrooms are permanently closed and they lock the exit gates behind you.
I mentioned it more to the player count claim. If you need to hunt for a server with actual players, how accurate could that number possibly be?
Unrelated: My friend with 58483873 hours in TF2 says it's not a game anymore, it's "a dating simulator with hats"
For the most part, yeah. The only way to avoid getting into matches with bots is to find community servers with active moderation. I queue into Uncle Dane's servers when I feel like booting up TF2.
A lot of those "players" are bot accounts though. TF2 is not a good comparison for active players.
FWIW: a lot of that number is genuine. Bots may be prevalent, but their numbers don't generally wildly fluctuate over short time periods. Between June & July the TF2 playercount shot up by 50k and most of that was probably organic.
Idk if this site is really accurate
https://activeplayer.io/overwatch-2/
But it says 300k currently. So yeah, it is quite a bit more popular in reality than TF2. Baldur’s Gate is at half a mil currently. Counterstrike over a mil.
Not to suggest the game isn’t doing well. Just throwing the numbers up for consideration
One of the highest up voted negative reviews at the end claims he is gonna play 2000 more hours.
This is temper tantrum shit. Well, some of it.
A lot of it reminds me of this:

When will Blizzard fans learn
I mean, they play products released by Blizzard/Activision, so I doubt much learning will take place. Especially after all the decades of Activision being complete tools to their customers.
The second that merger was announced I peaced out. I knew what was coming after having witnessed what became of COD.
Does Blizzard feel a sense of pride and accomplishment?
If I had to guess it's the microtransactions designed to squeeze every cent from their players. This game has an insane cost and it's not just cosmetics. They lock characters behind microtransactions. I bought overwatch one, they ended it, and have me Overwatch 2: athe Money Grab!
Not to mention if you bought Overwatch 1 they removed the entire game. It's just gone. I liked the first one but greed killed the game.
wait they just removed the game?? like no one can play it anymore?
Correct. OW2 is basically bolted on top of OW1, so OW1 doesn't exist anymore.
The OW1 client is gone, but Blizz migrated most things to OW2. The exceptions were the team size (changed from 6v6 to 5v5) and 1 match type (1 type dropped with 2 new types added). Collectibles and anything that could be purchased was also migrated from 1 to 2.
Its true that 1-2 of the new hero's in the past could be unlocked instantly with money but apart from that you don't need to spend a cent
Sure but you can just as easily spend zero cents in other games and get 10x the content.
I tried the game during the recent DnD event last month after a couple years away. Hadn't played since loot boxes were still a thing, when I was literally playing daily since release. Stopped because the player base was becoming almost as toxic as LoL. Also, the overnight nerfing made things so different that I couldn't use my mains effectively anymore.
My experience with the new game? It's a great wait in line simulator with a terrible deathmatch game getting in the way!
This is fun?
Game's dead right now.
They just invited steam users to the funeral.
Full disclaimer: I fell off Overwatch years ago, so this is just stuff I've picked up reading general game news, so I'm sure others will be more in-tune with what's up but here's an overview, at least:
So first off OW2 as a thing was always kind of bizarre. When it was a battle(dot)net exclusive, it was free if you owned 1, and straight-up automatically replaced OW1 in your library. It behaved like an update would for any other game, and that's because it kinda just was a big update to the game. Naturally there's some back and forth about if the gameplay changes are good or not, but the big issue is monetization.
So, when OW1 came out, they explicitly said that all content updates (basically things other than skins) would be free, including new characters, maps, etc. However, since OW2 was a "new" game, there was no risk of legal issues around false advertising if they were to start charging for new characters, which is exactly what they did. New characters now had to be unlocked via the battle pass (or purchased individually, I assume) in order to be playable, which obviously rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. (I vaguely remember this maybe being walked back to some degree after backlash, but I'm not sure one way or the other).
And all of this comes as Activision/Blizzard is going through a genuinely horrific series of scandals around workplace conditions. Like, there's genuinely too much to list here but famously, one of the OW characters was renamed since he was originally named after an employee who turned out to be a huge sexual abuser. There's report after report coming out on an almost daily basis, and it's abundantly clear that management (including infamous shitbag CEO Bobby Kotik) are intentionally trying to cover things up. Genuinely mind-boggling. At this point, it also becomes abundantly clear that ActiBlizz management is using OW as a distraction from the negative press they're getting, regularly announcing new updates or "progressive" (big air quotes due to the extreme cynical corporate nature) character details within hours of major scandals breaking.
So you've got all that on top of the usual toxicity that tends to form around competitive games if left unchecked. It's kind of a mess.
New characters are free. You just have to hit level 45 or 55 (I don’t remember, I haven’t played in awhile).
Or if you plop 10 bucks down on battle pass you get it immediately.
People overreact about the character thing. You can’t even use them in comp for a few weeks after they launch, but have access in training area to at least get a feel for it
Go PVEless go broke
I'm not fan of this game, but this is an obvious review bomb and IMO makes people look silly
Shit game getting shit reviews. That's literally the system doing its job.
No one should be reviewing a game 2h after release
Overwatch 2/Initial release date October 4, 2022
a few hours after launch
The game has been out for quite some time now. It's only just arrived on Steam. Battle.net had no way to post game reviews, so now everyone is giving their opinion since they have the platform.
Just because the game is new on steam, it doesn't mean the game is actually new. People finally have the ability to let Blizzard know what they actually think, and they're doing just that.
I’ve played around 1000h of OW2 alone and I’ve since given up on the game and would give it an honestly negative review.
It’s a shadow of its former self, unbalanced, full of toxic players, and full of predatory MTX and pay to win unless you grind obscene amounts (it was not having a battle pass that made me quit, having run out of the coins I’d earned and been given for stupidly preordering OW2 - the time sink to get a single skin is ridiculous).
1/3 games you have to deal with other players being racist, homophonic, antisemitic, and just generally abusive. This was so much less of an issue in OW1 I can only assume the influx of free players paired with brain drain at Blizzard has caused this and there’s no sign of improvement.
If a game is able to get 1000 hours of engagement isn't it actually pretty good? I don't have a game I've put that many hours into.
Did something drastically change X hours into Overwatch 2 that changed it from a game that could be played for that many hours into a not recommend?
You can lose 1000h to heroin too and I’m sure many recovering addicts wouldn’t give it a good review.
What changed was when I realized the experience for non-battle pass holders when I finally ran out of coins to buy it since I got a load by preordering and earned a few coins playing with the battle pass.
Without it, the game is a grind with little reward and skins can be €20. And when others have the latest hero that you have to grind for a month playing several hours a day to get, it’s incredibly predatory.
While I agree with a lot of what you said, how is it in any way pay to win? You can carry and win a match with any hero.
I'd also say it's in a fairly balanced state at the moment. I've seen way worse metas over the years...like GOATS or double shields
Ok but is this a freah review after playing it on Steam? So you do this with all games? Carrying your grudge from platform to platform to make sure it's thoroughly shit on?
It's the same game with the same microtransactions and the same community and the same devs. It's totally valid to leave your negative review on Steam. Nothing he said is fixed by launching the game through steam, lol.
Might as well take your game grudges to the grave
Mate, it's literally the same game that's been out for almost a year. There's nothing fresh to review, and the only platform it was on before didn't allow reviews. It was incomplete shit then, it's incomplete shit now, so it's getting exactly what it deserves.
It's been out a lot longer than that, everyone knows it's just 1.5, I still think it's unethical to review on a platform you haven't played
thanks for using Leebra!
