I’m apparently out of the loop. Why are so many people migrating from Bluesky?

People are (understandably) upset about the fact that Bluesky won’t ban Jesse Signal. Signal has been criticized for his weird/hateful views/writings on trans people: https://techcrunch.com/....

But the controversy also underlines ongoing tensions between the company and some of its most vocal users. It’s a tension that could be seen last month in skeptical responses to the company’s updated community guidelines, and in recurring complaints that Bluesky has been too quick to ban Palestinian and trans users, while offering leniency to big accounts like Singal’s.

That was where it started, but then they did ban a well-known Blacksky user, link (I don't know too many details), and then people really lost their shit. They were also surprised that well well well, the bsky ecosystem isn't all that decentralized after all. 😄

you know who doesn't have this problem?

mastodon...

The problem is the general public just wants to log into the popular app and engage with the algorithm. The moment you try to explain multiple servers and an ecosystem decision paralysis kicks in. Mastodon might have another wave of active users soon, but I’m worried without the handholding and marketing of a large company most users simply won’t jump onboard.

The problem that mastodon doesn't offer algorithm even if you join. I like threadiverse but mastodon is just so much wasted potential.

You just send them a sign up link to get them started. Pick a server for them. Then let them decide what to do after.

Mastadon has plenty of its own problems. Like instances with weird restrictions and god-modding.

How does that work? Aren't they both decentralized and federated?

Mastodon and Bluesky have very different architectures, and go about their decentralization and federation strategies very differently. Bluesky don’t really have the same concept of “instances” as Mastodon. Unless you recreate Bluesky’s entire technology stack, their decentralized bits typically run into some centralized linchpin that Bluesky still controls. There’s some efforts like Blacksky trying to create meaningful alternatives in the Bluesky ecosystem, but they’re still largely just proof of concept.

/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. Use spoiler tags in comments, and NSFW checkbox for posts.
This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.
