Why is Lemmy.ml blocked?

a year ago by jaz to c/infosecpub

I'm new to the Lemmiverse so I'm just starting to learn the history among instances, but I don't understand blocking Lemmy.ml as it's the developer's instance, which also hosts several other significant communities. Just curious why that instance is blocked because I didn't find anything by searching. Thanks.

Thanks! I knew about Lemmygrad and a tiny bit about a Lemmy dev, but didn't know Lemmy.ml's community had a bad rep too. Guess I'll have to use another account elsewhere. I've been trying to group interests to specific accounts on different servers, but it's been difficult and sometimes impossible to do because of the complicated and blocked lines of federation. It's not quite universally interlinked, especially when the comparison to email is made.

I'm a rather determined believer and adopter of Lemmy, but I wonder what the future of Lemmy growth will be like among average folks. I hope continued development of the Fediverse pulls users away from corporate platforms, but there's still a lot of work to do to smooth out the wrinkles.

I’ve been trying to group interests to specific accounts on different servers.

Just look at the defederated instances for each server! Including piefed ones. One reason I haven't switched from .world (even though I'm ideologically closer to like db0), is that it doesn't defederate from much, and I like the access.

It's fine. Mods will power trip, the old internet functioned fine like that.

But the Fediverse's goal is 'slow and steady,' not hyper-growth like a corporate startup. And I think thats good: we'll go through a few more enshittification cycles as the Fediverse takes its time to carefully develop...

Also, the cooperative aspect is huge. Different projects add to each other, instead of compete like they do in any other ecosystem. Look at piefed: its basically built as a fork to spite Lemmy's tankie devs, yet its fully cooperative with it. Eventually that will create a critical mass that the corporate silos simply cannot compete with.

The slowness feels frustrating, though.

Honestly I like the slowness and the small size. Even on lemmy, posting in bigger communities just gets you attacked or argued with by bitter people and it's just kinda sucks. I call it reddit dissease, but its pretty prominant in most other places too.

Small lemmy communities are a breath of fresh air because most people are there to commune rather than argue or judge. Prime example was Lemmy circa 2023

I feel like average folks greatly dislike managing multiple accounts, despite there being many tools out there to mitigate that. The average person just doesn't explore across the Internet like we do, so our crowd will always be more technical.

Oooh, that explains how a post can have a different set of comments / votes depending on which instance it's accessed from. Confused me for quite a while.

Excuses will be thrown around but in reality its little more than fediverse drama. The same mods that scream about ml censorship will ban you if you critique neoliberalism.

This is just nonsense. Lemmy.ml is an admin-enforced echo chamber. The only other server that behaves like they do is hexbear.

Saying things that are not true, and swearing to them and getting super-passionate about it and all assuring each other that that's how it happened, is like the bread and butter of some communities. Some people respond a lot more positively to simple confidence than they do to calm evidence and argument.

Ive watched during the 2024 election when saying Kamala was anything less than perfect would get you banned, any critique was simply not allowed, and any negative information about her campaign was treated as sabotage. Im not gonna just forget about that, freedom was traded on the chance that a couple of people might be swayed.

I'm a mod who whines constantly about ml censorship. Can you point to a single time when I have ever banned anybody for critiquing neoliberalism?

This weird strawman where .ml pretends that everyone else on Lemmy is just a mirror image of them but tryannically enforcing neoliberalism instead of Stalinism is so fucking bizarre. Nobody here likes either of those things, it is on par with "the libs will have your kids peeing in litter boxes" MAGA fantasy.

I have literally had comments deleted and banned on several .world comms for critiquing the Democrats, also I wasnt specifically talking about you nor do I belive I mentioned you.

The mainstream consensus of lemmy.world and all the rest of the "normal" Lemmy instances is that the Democrats aren't very good (for obvious reasons). I am extremely sure that I will be able to check the modlog and find that the actual issue was that the Democrats came up in some capacity, you were abusive towards other users or something similar, and then you were banned.

The .ml grouping of instances actually model this behavior, I think unintentionally: They are so flagrantly mean and hostile to anyone who ever doesn't agree with their way of looking at things that it causes some kind of issue, and then they get to retreat to their cadre of like-minded people all agreeing that everyone is unfair all the time "for no reason." MAGA people do the exact same thing. It's one of the behaviors you can model in your follower-base if you want them to insulate themselves from people who otherwise might be able to talk sense into them, to make their beliefs more "sticky" and less subject to rational conversation that might enable them to see the "other" in some kind of rational terms instead of as some kind of wild and evil caricature.

I was confident enough about it that I typed most of that out before seeing your modlog. Then I checked.

I predicted this months ago, I knew Kamala would loose. Did I vote for her? Yes. Did she deserve to loose? Also yes. Her political campaign couldn't stand up to even the smallest bit of criticism. Thats why world and twitter users were busy calling anyone who critiqued her or even questioned her a "russian bot" or "tankie". She made absolutely no attempt to gain votes and promised nothing to the voters, instead she basically said "Im not orange man, vote for me". Now shes lost the NeoLibs are desperately trying to find a scapegoat, some blame protest voters and non voters, some blame the working class, some blame Muslims, some blame Jews, some blame Trans people, and furthermore some blame POC or any other minority that they can think of. This is exactly why Kamala lost, her campaign couldn't stand up to scrutiny and now yall are coping to distract yourself from the fact that the slightly better corporate puppet lost. Cope and seethe ShitLibs

Yeah sure the critique of the Democrats was the reason you got your comment removed... If you look up and down in this comment thread, you will see at least a dozen people saying what you said. None of them are deleted. Because they're not being unhinged and hostile about it, their comments critiquing the Democrats are allowed to stay. Imagine that.

I realize that this factual critique will do nothing to sway you lol

I will defend that comment, I was pissed that Trans people were being blamed and the sharp rise of outright bigotry in neolib spaces. Also yeah her campaign sucked, Democrats learned nothing from this. She made no appeal to the left and tried to appeal to "centrist Republicans", I predicted that would fail and it did fail. All of my predictions on the 2024 elections happened and exit polls confirmed all my suspicions. Yet pointing that out despite me explicitly voting for her made me the big scary leftist.
