NTA. Your flatmate sounds like a control freak.

He does give that vibe, but I've never had a rent inspection with an agent before. I've only had private rentals before this.

NTA. Your agent should have waited, or clarified, or even just communicated in any way, in order to continue inspecting the property. And even if it's such a huge problem that they missed one room, it's within their capacity as a functioning adult to come back another day to make sure the room isn't somehow in a terrible condition that isn't already reflected by the rest of the property.

But they're not the asshole either. Your housemate is, assuming they're stressing you out about this and making you worried that you're going to make him homeless. It sounds like his housing is a source of anxiety for him, but he shouldn't be putting that on you.

I'm going with NAH. You did nothing wrong, but in the current rental environment your flatmate's fears are pretty understandable.

Hopefully the inspection was fine. If the agent had been one of those power tripping types they would have probably told you to get off the call.

Yeah, I didn't mean to throw the game considering he's not going to cope with homelessness at his age.

I don't think you did. Realistically (unless you guys are putting holes through the walls or something) all that's at stake here is just building up a friendly relationship of goodwill between you and the rental agency.

It's understandable that in his position he's upset that wasn't furthered, but it would be an exaggeration to paint it as anything worse than that. No one is likely to evict you for staying on a phone call.

The legislator, because you have abysmal renters rights. Landlord inspection WTF.

I'm not sure I understand: rental inspection as in they look around and make sure you're keeping the place reasonably clean and there is no major damage? Because to be blunt, in that case the agent doesn't give a flying fuck what you or anybody else is doing, and the visit notification is pretty much "please don't be naked."

I'd guess if the agent saw a relatively clean place and looked into a room to see somebody working on a computer and taking a call, she probably just decided to not bother you and to get on with the rest of her day.

I'm just confused because I don't understand what else could or should have happened. Are you supposed to lead the agent on a tour of your bedroom while offering them tea and cookies?

In summary, did the inspection actually "go badly" in that you're being charged for something or whatever? Because it sounds a lot like they saw a clean place and called it quits, which is usually the ideal outcome.

We won't know until the lease is renewed.

If they performed the inspection and aren't complaining about anything, I'd guess 99% chance they didn't see anything that they had to give a shit about, your unit number has been checked off on a list as "OK", and nobody at the agency is going to think about it at all until next time your unit comes up on their to-do list. If they had a problem, they'd probably tell you.

I mean, this is not counting weird stuff. Like if they think you guys are hookers using the place to meet clients, or think that you're drug dealers or hoarders or anything crazy, they might keep their mouth shut and get ready to refuse to renew your lease. But a guy taking a phone call is, uh... not the same as any of those things.

They came back with happy remarks and extended the lease. His woes are long forgotten.

Oh I hoard, but it's all in my storage unit.

NTA.

A rental inspection is simply a quick fly-through by the agent. It's not like they need to pull up the carpet to look for water damage.

I think your flatmate is a little dramatic, and sounds like he lives with a "glass half-empty" kind of vibe.

OP could be disturbed. The rental agent didn't disturb OP even though OP waved the agent in to disturb them. The agent refused to go in the room because OP was on the phone.

NTA. The agent could have clarified, your roommate could have checked in. Overall, agents don't care that much. Mine's gotten me to take pictures of the place the last few times I've needed to do inspections, lol.

INFO is my take on this, you are posting from your perspective but also letting lose on some detail (I am sure its because of work/meeting perspective) But the way things are going over what I have read you are painting your flatmate rather bit too chaotic and spazzy. Think it needs more detail to determin if and or not AITA in my opinion.

NTA, this sounds like an honest misunderstanding/miscommunication based on the information provided. I'm not sure why the agent didn't tell your flatmate she couldn't complete the inspection; I would assume he'd come and address the issue in the moment.

I'm going to go with nta unless there's more to the story than we're being told. Rental agents see people on the phone all the time doing that type of stuff. You're not the first or the last shell see on the phone like that. It sounds like she was able to see in your room so i wouldn't be worried about that.

"My flatmate is over the hill..." "...because I'm not retired..." "At his age..."

YTA for the condescending way you talk about him. Why, because he has the audacity to be older than you and take something that is important seriously?

path: 0 1499561, hotness: undefined, score: 3, children: 1
roo 1 point 3 years ago

You would be 100% right if that wasn't his own way of talking about himself.

And you're definitely right if I keep talking about him or anyone else like that. I've been struggling to frame age related discussions considering I know older people who are far more youthful.

And, I have apologised to a few people this month when they ask how I'm getting on with my flatmate because this kind of discussion shouldn't be about age. Flatmates are a tough subject, and I don't like back handing my friends with ageism just because of issues at home.

However, please don't overlook the way I'm getting screamed at in my own home because of somebody else's irrational and self-imposed fears about age related vulnerability.

Thanks for the insight!

@roo yeah like YTA a little bit. You knew the window was 9-12, yet still decided to “get on with your day” at 11 and make an an important call? I get that it sucks waiting for things to go down when you have other things to do, but you went into this situation knowing the time frame. Why not go somewhere else for the important call?

path: 0 459530, hotness: undefined, score: 2, children: 1

In hindsight I would have waited, but at the time I was worried they might be late or not even going to make it considering we were about to blow passed 11am with no word.

YTA. Your roommate was busting his ass to clean up 3 times prepping for this so you knew it was important . You should have stayed off the phone at least till the end of the inspection window.

Or you could have put your caller on hold briefly while you introduced yourself and welcomed the inspector in to your room instead of using a nonverbal.

We are missing a lot of context here. This post is super vague.

I'm going to try to avoid speculating on the multiple misty, hand-wavy points that invite speculation with the exception of one: I assume that if this call was some sort of huge make-or-break deal that couldn't be postponed for even one more minute on threat of horrific consequences, you'd have said that, given how much trouble you've gone to in order to make yourself look good and your roommate look bad.

Therefore, YTA. The window was 9-12. You should have waited until 12 to "get on with your day". Period. Even if this is actually no big deal, you caused your roommate a ton of unnecessary stress for no reason other than boredom intolerance, which you knew would happen.
