I imagine that power is a similar stimulant as drugs. The more you have, the more you want. And with any kind of addiction, it quickly becomes toxic. You're wealthy, so you want to be super rich. Once you're super rich you want to have direct power over people instead of just power through capital. One form of this may be political activities, lobbyism, propaganda, buying land, sport teams etc. Another can be sexual domination and abuse and getting away with it. Its a complex and nuanced issue, and the research on the topic struggles to get any amount of funding since no one wants their name attached to it. And what does get published tends to get buried and locked away hard. Again cause no one wants to be attached to it.
