Flashback Genesis / Megadrive

4 days ago by TheVoiceOfRaison to c/retrogaming

One of my first memories of a cyber punk game, though at the time I wasnt even aware of the term, I was 10 years old when this released. I remember it having super smooth animation which at the time blew me away. If I recall the game was digitally hand drawn. I rage quit this one a few times, often falling to my death. It had a very Prince of Persia feels about it. I owned the European Mega Drive version. What I didnt know till recently is that the US version contains a small 16 page comic created by Marvel which has got to make it one of the rarest Marvel comics ever no? The game has some memorable levels and the music has always stuck with me. It was basically Blade Runner and the game did a great job of immersing you in it. Also a really fun game to speed run!

There were also a couple sequels weren't there? Heart of the Alien and some other one on PC

Edit: Heart of the alien is the sequel to Out of this World. Fade to Black is the sequel to Flashback. Though I see they made a Flashback 2 I might have to check out

Flashback (1992) was inspired by Out of This World (1991, called Another World in Europe) but was not made by Eric Chahi. However, Eric and the creator of Flashback, Paul Cuisset, both worked on a game called Future Wars in 1989.

Out of This Worlds original Amiga version credits just two people: Jean-Francois Freitas who did music and sound effects, and Eric Chahi who did everything else.

Personally, I prefer the SNES Interplay port's music by Charles Deenan, but all versions of the soundtrack are good in their own way.

Fade to Black was awesome for its time.

As was Another World. I watched a YouTube video about it. It explained what the Amiga was good at and the limitations, and how that game worked so well. Real time poly animations. It works so well.

Real time poly animations.

Just want to post this: This page allows to playback some cutscenes (higher-res than Genisis)

Not perfect, though I imagine it's probably a fault of being designed 1:1*. Perhaps there is a better version (allowing modern res), though the Steam version uses an upscale filter instead (maybe because the maps aren't polygonal?). Another World seems to have a better treatment (though Steam says 800MB, so not sure if they rastered it or if they just made the audio uncompressed).

* For a similar problem, some people (One being 'Old Man Yells at Code' on YT) have made newer videos about how classic Sierra games were actually polygons (...at least lines/fill) but don't always properly connect when rendered at higher res (and attempts to re-interpret the data).

I was thinking this game reminded me of Another World in terms of the art style and game play. I just went off searching for the name of Another World because I had completely forgotten the name, should have just read the comments!

They were both published by Delphine software so they could have had some crossover there.

Well as I said, the same people worked on both games, the only difference being Eric did Out of This World, and Paul did Flashback, but they had both worked together previously.
