AI is already lifting productivity, most clearly in research, where the average analyst now covers 17 stocks, up from 15.
If AI is making people more efficient than you need less people, as you push the less people to do more the people who cannot deal with the more will be pushed to lower and lower positions until they are told we do not need “you anymore!”
Though it's obviously not to the extreme there yet like it reportedly is with Amazon warehouses and drivers, it also reminds me of the famous factory scene from Modern Times. They'll just keep on speeding up that assembly line until somebody snaps.
