Back when I managed the hardware store, there was a 7-11 directly across the street from us which had one of the universe's last remaining payphones. The phone was in a "booth," so to speak, made of those textured fiberglass panels but without a door. The open side faced directly at our store.

Vandals insisted on scribbling all over the walls of the phone booth, certainly because it was in a sheltered location that was not visible to the store clerk... But it was visible to us, which honked me off.

So for years upon years, every time I had a quart of mistinted paint or anything about to expire that I was sick of looking at, I'd go over there and paint over all the graffiti. I didn't do any prep work or anything. Just, blast it with the hose out front of the store to get all the loose dirt off and then slather every drop of whatever was in the current bucket all over the walls until I ran out. That phone booth was any of hundreds of different random colors at various points, and of course my efforts were in vain because usually within a day or two there would be new tags and obscenities scribbled and spraypainted all over it. (One wonders how much of that spraypaint those hoodlums bought from us.) But I kept doing it, because why the hell not? Plus, the guys running the 7-11 would give me free stuff in exchange occasionally.

The very tail end of this shaggy dog story is, ultimately that store went out of business and a decade or so ago it was finally demolished. Out of curiosity I went over there when they were working on it and drove a nail into one of the walls of the phone booth. Turns out the built up layers of my paint were getting on for an inch thick. If anyone had been paying attention enough to notice, apparently I'd reduced the interior volume of that booth by about 2" on all sides.

Well I think we can all agree we'd rather be honked off, than honked on.

This is classic "I don't understand graffiti" behaviour.

Graffiti is about the act, not the final result. The artists not only don't care if you cover it up after some time, they LIKE IT.

You were just giving them a fresh canvas to play with over and over lol.

Also, graffiti is beautiful, human, and improves the community almost without exception.

If you think scribbling swear words and spraypainting swastikas and racial epithets all over your community "improves" it, I don't know what to tell you.

Some graffiti can indeed be artistic, I'm with you there. That's not the kind I was painting over, though.

I'm impressed that they correctly estimated the amount of space they would need for all of those words. Negligible clumping of letters to cram in the last bit. Even for just a short phrase, I sometimes have to write backwards to ensure I don't run out of room on the paper.
