[solved] firefox on Linux change 'alt+1' to 'ctrl+1'

3 months ago by yaw to c/firefox

Hi I use firefox on Linux and want to change to the first, second, third, ..., last tab with ctrl+1/2/3/.../9 instead of alt+1/2/3/.../9 because alt is already mapped to changing desktops. any idea how I could accompilish this?

edit1: I use mac and windows at work and there the shortcuts are ctrl+<number>. It would be so nice to have consistent shortcuts 🐧

[SOLUTION] install ctrl+number extension recommended by @TobuscusLover2001@lemmy.zip

Sorry I realised I misread your post. It's strange your keybinds on Linux to change tabs are alt+num? For me, its Ctrl+num... and i think this is the default. The most likely reason is either:

  1. A setting or issue with your desktop environment/keyboard layout
  2. A keybind remapper you might've installed.
  3. An extension you installed on Firefox

check if the alt/ctrl switch persists outside Firefox.

This is really weird. I'll have to check on a different distro. I'm currently on fedora and firefox was already installed.

  1. ctrl+T/C/V (new tab, copy, paste) work as expected and all other shortcuts including ctrl and alt work as well
  2. I've installed a keyd for switching alt+mod otherwise it's a pretty fresh install
  3. I started firefox in --safe-mode and got the same behavior. But thanks helping me trouble shoot.

I have vimium which lets me set vim like key binds for firefox. It only works once the JS has loaded on a page so default screens like the new tab doesn't work. Other than that, it should let you rebind it to whatever you want, you can disable the other keys yoy don't need.

nice one, I already use vimium and there are command to go to the first and the last tab but not the 2nd to 8th tab, but this is already quite a solid work around thanks!

you can use g + n to go to the numbered tab, or shift + t to search existing tabs. they maybe be more shortcuts that you prefer.

vimium should completely sidestep your issue.

have you tried g2? or even relative commands like 2gt to go 2 tabs over?

Try this: https://addons.mozilla.org/...

If it doesnt work, your best option is to either find another extension that does. or bite the bullet and configure a key remapper like keyd and make a "layer" to toggle the bind alt+(num) to ctrl+(num).

shortkeys doesn't install (maybe because I'm on ARM?). The error is Installation aborted because the add-on appears to be corrupt.

I think it's just a preview feature, so it's not accessible through a normal menu yet I think, but if you type about:keyboard in the address bar and press Enter, I think it will allow you to remap these (under the Navigation section).
