Also a bad developer in general, including the blacklist addition in an unrelated commit without mention in the commit message and just saying "Version bump, codename selection": https://github.com/...

Did you notice what he replaced the image with? I Think it might be an AI generated Anubis picture but it could also be a generic one. Either way ugly as fuck.

Nope he went through the effort of replacing them with something:

Slop anubis pic

Don't mind that I didn't include all 3 of them, they're all carbon copies of each other.

Yep. I'm waiting for a formal response from the dev before deciding what to do. Most likely we'll be removing our tesseract front end though.

How does this affect the instance? Not not well versed into how it all connects and how a frontend blocks the instance it's running on.

ada 18 points a month ago

It doesn't directly at the moment.

What it means is that any users on remote instances using tesseract as their front end won't be able to access blahaj.zone communities.

If we were to upgrade our version of tesseract, it would also presumably do the same thing to our own users, but we're currently running an older version, from before this blacklist was implemented.

This is beyond the pale. I would not trust this developer with anything going forward. Thankfully this does seem to be the only notable project on his github.

This is an interface. This is the human readable layer that exists to show the state of the underlying instance software you're interacting with. Lemmy or piefed instances are the ones that are supposed to do the filtering. An interface adding this kind of blacklist filtering is underhanded and deceptive; sneaking in something malicious through a backdoor.

I am here on blahaj because I agree to let Ada and the rest of the blahaj team implement and manage domain filtering in an appropriate way. I trust their judgement and consent to have my experience shaped by their choices. I have no such trust, nor do I consent to have some random UI designer do the same without even disclosing that they're doing it.

Remove this forever, and blacklist any software that asimons04 has or will ever work on.

I'm only aware of this blacklist because of the recent change, but it has existed since 2024. We should remove this and any other interface that implements similar filtering, regardless of what those filters are designed to remove.

It's a severe overstep of a developer to silently run their own blacklist for content, servers, or people on someone else's server without their knowledge, doesn't matter if it had the best intentions. Once you go down the route of trying to trick admins into not knowing you are doing it you lose all trustworthiness.

He could easily have made it a backdoor to collect the login creds of admins he disliked so he could trash their servers later. Who's to say he didn't honestly.

Some things:

First, Blåhaj Lemmy is pretty friendly from my experience, so I struggle to see how it would be an extremist instance. Also another instance in the block list, Ibbit, if anything, seems to be aligned with the political vision the dev's block list implies, so I don't see why it's included either.

Second, a problem I have with Piefed too, I don't like the idea of a central power deciding what is good and what is not to the individuals or even for administration. Lemmy has an instance-blocking feature on the individual user's settings, so let him/her be mature and choose who he/she walks with. And if administration thinks a given instance isn't good for the experience intended in their own instance, that's for them to decide and for the users to decide if the administration's choice was good or not, not for an easy-to-miss setting to.

Third and similarly, for the other domains blocked, use Ublock Origin/Violentmonkey to hide posts with them, ask Dessalines to add a per-user domain block feature similar to Mastodon and Mbin's, or whatever. Again decision should be in the hands of the users and administration.

It is my opinion that frontend software like this has no business making a stance like this, and I would not trust this developer going forward. I already dislike when developers of frontend apps do this even when it seems reasonable, when it's reactive and unreasonable it just reinforces that they should not be developers of something that runs on other people's machines.

Seems like there was also signs of user filtering that has been removed in the main branch, with older commits showing commented out sections blocking a hard coded list of users for apparently being "Garden-variety crackpots" among other reasons in the comments...

Wow, they block a lot, and they have comments in the code about what they find wrong with each particular instance, forget this software

It's interesting that blahaj lemmy is explicitly included in their pre-populated list of instances on the sign up page. Although that was added 2 years ago and blahaj was just added to the blocklist in may.

Edit: after poking around the db0 thread it looks like this guy at one time had separate lists of communities and even individual users that were blacklisted by the front end.

I don't think moderation should be up to developers, instead it should be up to instance/community admins and the individual users who can always block etc.

I hope the dev that forked it continues with developing it as then there is fuck all the original dev can do and that'll grate him every dam time he sees it. :)

According to the “Forked” message at the top of the forked GitHub, they plan to just drop support for the Tesseract front-end with Lemmy v1.0, whenever that comes around.

So better hope someone can pick it up to maintain the changes to it whenever that comes around. Hopefully there won't be any need to keep up with the main Tesseract build if the Dev's actions in response to this are anything to go off of.
