This really isn't a W. Even though I don't play any of these games, Ive had friends who have had a real interest in switching to Linux, but didn't because they couldn't play LOL or Valorant.

It's not really linux's fault by any means, but it's no W.

That's like wanting to try vaping to help you stop smoking but never doing it because you can't find nicotine vapes that taste that specific burning shit flavor you're used to.

They can keep that shit on windows. The anti cheat will probably evolve to include AI bullshit like nanny assistants to make sure you're using your computer like a human is supposed to and live facial identify verification to make sure you're watching the anti cheat ads they'll start playing when you die.

LoL specifically may be for the best. I don't know anyone who got into that game in a healthy way or thought they enjoyed it in retrospect after switching to a new game.

I don't know about that. The Linux community has its own brand of toxic issues too. Try bringing up systemd or rust.

Systemd!? What did you just cram into PID 1, you bloated binary blob? You are nothing to me but just another sprawling dependency graph masquerading as an init system. I will chmod -x you out of existence with a precision the likes of which hasn't been seen since the Unix was written, mark my words. You think you can get away with saying "one process should do everything" over the internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of grey neckbeards across the mailing lists and your commit history is being traced right now so you better prepare for the fork. The fork that wipes out the pathetic little monolith you call an init system. You're fucking dead, kiddo.

As a former MOBA enjoyer, IMO MOBA games inherently rage bait their players and make toxicity inevitable long term regardless of whose playing.

Iโ€™m seeing a bunch of toxicity in the milsim Arma. But based on a recent interaction, that has more to do with cross play with PlayStation users than anything else.

I haven't played Arma in nearly ten years. The community, even in DayZ (mod) used to be relatively chill. Especially compared to more fast paced shooters. I can only remember one person I seriously would prefer die slowly and painfully who I met in Arma.

The mod was primetime for multiplayer etiquette.

Sure it descended into KoS shit-talking from time to time, but it was still miles better than any large gaming community.

ThunderComplex 12 points 2 months ago

The problem is that games like LoL or Valorant are kinda made so that you "need" to have a dedicated LoL PC. You're not supposed to install these games on your main PC. Because these games are so highly competitive with real cash prizes involved, the devs ask for more control over your PC than typical games. It's not a Windows vs Linux thing, it's about control.
I'm not condoning this practice but it helps to understand why the situation is like this.

path: 0 25050970, hotness: undefined, score: 12, children: 11
Korhaka 18 points 2 months ago

What percentage of players even do those competitive things though? Surely you could have an option to turn the orwellian anticheats off for regular players and only enabled for the sweaty wankers competitive players.

path: 0 25050970 25051079, hotness: undefined, score: 18, children: 9
rumba 5 points 2 months ago

It's deeper.

  • Stopping you from running without checks it makes it harder to develop cheats.
  • Keeping it off linux keeps them from having to support linux (small base, big effort)

The profit isn't there, so they're not going to do it.

path: 0 25050970 25051079 25061321, hotness: undefined, score: 5, children: 1
Korhaka 1 point 2 months ago

You develop a cheat and it works, then get banned the moment you use it in a competitive game? Or banned on a delay to make it harder to tell if it was detected automatically or on a manual review.

ThunderComplex 3 points 2 months ago

idk but there's probably dozens of those. I don't know what Rito are thinking and I kinda don't want to. Intrusive anti cheat doesn't work but those companies don't care. Unfortunately, in the rat race between cheaters and anti cheat devs, actually developing a game solidly such that cheating is basically impossible has not been thought of yet. I also suspect """"""micro"""""" transactions are a major driving factor here.

Anti-cheats will always be bypassed, also, you can have the cheats on a totally different computer (which can be a single board one too btw) that act as periferials so the game can't even notice it...

path: 0 25050970 25051079 25051120 25057573 25059116, hotness: undefined, score: 2, children: 0
ThunderComplex 1 point 2 months ago

Anti cheat will always be bypassed. BF6, requiring secure boot, had cheats during the open beta. And this will always be true due to the nature of how computers work. You would need to have a dedicated computing device that does nothing but play a specific game in order to ensure cheating isn't possible; think tamagochi but for league of legends.

I quite like coop games, cheating isn't an issue. If someone cheats so what, I just don't play with them and stick with people that don't cheat.

Or you get some mods that are more of a grey area and then its just checking when you start the lobby what your friends are happy with. Today we are using the pink dildo of consequence mod, good with everyone? Cool, lets go.

Ironic that this post is in itself being toxic to people that enjoy the titles mentioned.

I enjoy cod and lol and even Fortnite but cannot play them on Linux. Iโ€™m sad that I canโ€™t enjoy the things that I enjoy. I still play league on my MacBook but itโ€™s annoying having to switch systems for one game. I would love to be able to play ** any ** game of my choosing and not be harassed about it.

Try getting help for trivial Linux issues and you have a 50/50 chance of having a Linux elitist eat you alive for not already knowing what they know. RTFM and scoffing.

Linux has the same toxic ratio of users that the games this post is pointing out.

path: 0 25041452, hotness: undefined, score: 2, children: 4
PabloSexcrowbar 10 points 2 months ago

The reason those games aren't on Linux is because of horrendous security overreach, and if they did work it would mean something, somewhere has been compromised in order to make that possible. I'm thankful they don't work because the last thing I want is for game devs to have kernel-level access to my machine so they can dictate what I'm allowed to do on my computer.

path: 0 25041452 25044231, hotness: undefined, score: 10, children: 2
otter 5 points 2 months ago

I don't think that's what the user is asking for though. I read it as wishing that the games didn't have those security requirements, so that they could play the games on Linux.

The joke in the meme isn't "thank you to Linux maintainers for not compromising security", its a joke about those games themselves.

Also their point about toxicity is valid, and I've found that it varies by distro. Without being specific, in case I just had a bad experience, some support communities were very hostile to users asking questions. If the new person didn't phrase their question perfectly, using all the correct terminology, the support person refused to answer the question. It was a thread of "You said X, but X actually means Y, so I don't understand your question. Did you mean Z", when it is obvious from context what they meant.

If youโ€™re launching it from the Battle.net launcher, you can run it through Lutris. I play WoW on Linux just fine.

Fair warning, Iโ€™ve run into an issue with the installer before, canโ€™t recall what it was, but I remember I was able to find the solution after googling it real quick. (Iโ€™ve done it like twice, once on my computer and once on my steam deck and the second time was a how did I forget kinda moment)

Battle.net has something finicky where you have to run the installer slightly different than normal, but once itโ€™s installed I havenโ€™t had an issue.
