Therapy is for the rich.

Scraping by week to week I don't have the money to fund exceptionally well off professionals who don't really do a lot of actual work for that money.

You don’t have to go to therapy, but it’s absolutely not only for the rich. My sessions were $5 an hour through the local LGBT center because of income scaling, and they literally changed my life, helped me work through the worst symptoms of my PTSD and gain the confidence to go back to school.

Crappy therapists don’t do much, and I’ve seen my fair share of crappy ones, but a good therapist who you trust and are honest with can absolutely help.

E: sorry, didn’t see this was the Women’s Stuff community, I’m trans but don’t identify as a woman, mods if you feel this comment needs to be deleted please do

Thanks for being polite and respectful of this space!

I’ll second your advice on therapy as well. Depending on your location, accessible therapy may be easier now than it used to be. Worth exploring!

Everywhere I've lived has had free counseling services. I have to remind these people that those exist when they keep talking at me with their problems.

And when their appointment in 17-23 months finally gets around, I'm sure they'll enjoy counseling!

I know I did. It was just a bitch and a half to get seen

Better than me having to use my counseling sessions to deal with the extra, one-sided emotional labor.

When I was a kid there was a stigma against therapy; people thought it was for the insane. At some point it flipped and not going to therapy became a red flag for many.

I have been to lots of therapy and had necessary medicine gatekept by it when i couldnt afford it. There should be no stigma to it. There should no stigma to not going to it. It can be great, and it can hurt people.

Lets not dictate to others whether or not they should go.

This here. Therapy is a western hobby, and an American one in particular. Other cultures have their own ways of dealing with these matters. Western-style therapy imposed on them often causes more damage than letting their own processes play out. Are they perfect? No. But nor is the western-style therapy culture.

Is it wrong of me to see this as a red flag?

If someone has access to therapy and they admit to having mental issues of some kind but they just say they're going to work it out on their own then I usually start distancing myself.

Obviously, they are relying on their friends to fix them!

Oh, you're not equipped to be someone's therapist, even though you are being as supportive as possible? Why do you hate the mentality ill?!

I do therapy when I can afford it. When I can't, I try to do a lot of self discovery, learning myself, being aware of the things I'm doing and why I'm avoiding things. And then I try to keep track of them for when my finances allow me to do therapy again.

Women only trans inclusive This is an inclusive community for all things women. Whether you're here for make up tips, feminism or just friendly chit chat, we've got you covered.

Rules…

  1. Women only… trans women are women, and transphobic or gender critical talk isn’t allowed. Anyone under the trans umbrella (e.g. non-binary, bigender, agender) is free to decide whether a women's community is a good fit for them.
  2. Don’t be a dick. No personal attacks, no aggression, play nice.
  3. Don’t hate on groups, hatefilled talk about groups is not allowed. Ever.
  4. No governmental politics, so no talk of Trump actions etc. We recommend Feminism@beehaw.org for that, but here is an escape from it.
  5. New accounts or users with few comments may have their posts removed to prevent spam and bad-faith participation.
