Hexagonal slotted misalignment

7 days ago by Tikiporch to c/mildlyinfuriating

SL10 is aligned to the hexagon base on two edges, SL8 is aligned to two vertices.

Wow, this is so mild. Well done.

Very manipulative post.

You make it look like SL10 would be great, and SL8 would be at fault. But you could also have placed the SL8 to be perfectly vertical, then things would not look that clear cut any more!

Justice for SL8!!!

It seems intentional that they are aligned differently so you can identify them?

This is an explanation I can live with.

No one refute it, please.

I'm sorry.

SL10 is a wider bit than SL8. It's oriented point to point on the 1/4 hex because that dimension is longer than flat-to-flat. Not sure why SL8 is the way it is, it could be oriented point-to-point or flat-to-flat and still be in spec either way.

One is for the 30° and the other for the 60° flat heads

If you mean S8 and S10, the hex slots look okay; it's the flathead drivers that are out of alignment to me.

The base of the flatheads are hexagonal.

They are. I agree.

Edit: I see that we're agreeing on the same thing but earlier I was coming from a different angle (pun slightly intended).

Nothing to see here. Move along.

That is absolutely useless, and should be returned immediately.

My guess is the SL10 is wide enough that it needs the extra space available point to point, and as such is the only one that gets precision placement during machining.

I don't think I've seen a how it's made for driver bits. Would be interesting to know what special steps are needed.

Hexagonal material is fed through a die and held in place while grinding wheels push in the hollows in each face, generally simultaneously. The tip is cut off and sent to another process to finish the back and deburr.

The alignment of the head is intentional on both parts. Generally you want the flats to continue all the way up the side. Particularly wide flats have to be aligned diagonally.

I'd take it back, I wouldn't be able to handle that. It's making me itch.

ahem actually, SL8 is aligned to faces. SL10 is aligned to both vertices and edges. The vertex is the pinpoint of a corner

Fair. My use of "aligned" was vague.

Just take it out and turn it a little bit so it sits flush with the other?

It can only rotate in 60 degrees increments because hexagon, but the offset between them is 30 degrees

Ohhh right, would be good to have seen two positions, surely the one to the right isn't quite as bad as this

The Chinese worker producing these bits was a bit inattentive at the end of his 14h shift. Cut him some slack!
