In addition to being totally awesome in the foreground, there are an absurd amount of references to other Ghibli films in this. (We'll excuse the front brake on Kiki's scooter being totally wrong on that merit.) I'm down for it.

The brakes on flying scooters are not the same as their terrestrial counterpart.

Yes, I imagine parachutes would have to be involved.

(For any of the non-turbo nerds in the audience, the artist has depicted a brake caliper for a disc brake bike on a hub which is clearly a drum brake, and has no brake disc. In fact, the edge of the brake drum would have to pass through the caliper, which in this case may rely on some manner of witch magic.)

For the rest of us, literally every person in the background is from a Miyazaki film except possibly the bus driver, and we can't tell with him because his face is blocked by Kiki's radio.

Random anecdote: I remember thinking of Jiji as a VERY sarcastic cat until I saw the movie this past year with subs instead of dubs, and I was quite surprised by how Jiji sounded. I had to go look up clips of the dub to figure out that they TOTALLY changed his character. lol

That surprised me too when I watched the sub version. I heard the DVD version with Phil Hartman ad-libs first, then the Blu-Ray with some of the ad-libs removed and I thought Disney was censoring something. Turns out Japanese Jiji doesn't wise crack much at all, so the revised English dub is more accurate. I still think Phil Hartman made Jiji a more memorable character.

Phil Hartman made Jiji a more memorable character.

I am forced to agree. But I remember thinking that it was a bit jarring and the cat was far more sarcastic than warranted, even for a cat. lol. But I still loved the movie, even dubbed :)

Yes, and they even inserted lines for Jiji where he originally had none in a couple of instances. The Disney dub even more infamously butchered the original musical score by replacing quite a bit of the thematically appropriate songs that contribute to the time period in which the movie is set with generic early '90s pop-slop that sounds like it ought to belong to a daytime soap opera instead.

Compare:

Rouge no Dengon (the opening) / Soaring

Yasashisa Ni Tsutsumareta Nara (the closing credits) / I'm Gonna Fly

And that's before taking into account that they felt the need to replace much of the incidental music, such as during the crows sequence, with friggin' Looney Tunes songs.

As I understand it the only reason that all this didn't result in Miyazaki directly threatening anyone at Disney with his samurai sword was due to there being an ocean in the way. This might have been a lucky escape for all those responsible. (That, and Joe Hisaishi probably deserves to have his complaint heard first.)
