It's not just ice/water but the sand and stones it moves with it. Or is it just a coincidence that river stones are all round and smooth?
People have made time lapse videos of present-day glaciers moving, carrying rocks and sand with them. You can hike into high mountains with glaciers and observe the terminal moraines, the piles of rubble the glaciers deposit downhill. The mechanism is hardly controversial.
