Is there an open-source screen translator for Android that isn’t made by Google?

a month ago by ᴋɪᴋɪ to c/degoogle

I’m looking for an app that can translate text directly on my Android screen without using Google Translate.

Ideally, I’d like something that:

is open source has no ads works offline or sends as little data as possible.

can translate a selected area of the screen, including text in apps and games.

I found a few options, such as Offline Translator and Screen Translate, but I’d like to know whether anyone here recommends either of them or knows of a better alternative.

I'm pretty sure that "failed to verify" means that after it downloads, it scans the file to make sure it exactly matches what was expected. There might have been an error in transmission causing something to not match, or the source you downloaded from could have a different copy.

I just tried it on my phone, and it installed fine. Try downloading it again.

In the settings, my repositories are -FUTO: (app.futo.org/fdroid/repo) -F-Droid: (f-droid.org/repo)

and that's it. Is that what you have as well?

@gatitaQwQ it can actually translate images, so it should be fit. What error did you get?

look on f-droid first, then github if nothing decent shows up. the big thing is checking what OCR/translate backend it uses, since “non-google” usually means offline tesseract or similar, which works but can be kinda slow and worse with messy fonts.

already tried using f-droid. The only app I liked on f-Droid was LoloTrans. But it doesn't work consistently; I tried everything and nothing works, so I gave up. I also tried searching on GitHub. But I never find the app I want.

i'd check F-Droid first, then GitHub if nothing decent shows up. the hard part is that “screen translator” usually needs OCR + overlay/accessibility permissions, and if you want it private you also need offline OCR/translation models, which narrows the options a lot.

i’d check F-Droid first, but yeah this is a weirdly hard niche on android. the overlay + OCR + translation combo usually ends up depending on google/mlkit or some external translation API, so fully open source is harder than it sounds.
